By Sara Higgins
Reporter
Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND, TEXAS -
Joe Barron, Don Simpson and Ryan Wonderly all were church leaders trusted by their communities, and all have faced allegations related to child sexual abuse.

Fort Worth-based trial lawyer Greg Love held sessions for both church leaders and the public Tuesday at the Midland Center to discuss sexual abuse prevention and awareness. Love, who has represented victims of sexual abuse since 1994, worked to debunk myths in attendees' minds about who can be a predator, and what warning signs to look for in their own congregations.

Brett is a nurse and amateur photographer. Shelly was a former literacy specialist and ESL teacher. They both love travelling and seeing the world, especially Africa and Asia. "It's all in your perspective"

"Yesterday I went to visit McKean Hospital with our CAM staff and a volunteer that is here helping us for 2 weeks. McKean Hospital is one of the first hospitals in Thailand that was devoted solely to treating people with Leprosy. McKean Hospital was founded in 1908 by Presbyterian Missionaries Mr and Mrs McKean. McKean is surrounded on one side by a river and a stream that connects the river to create an island of sorts. The hospital grew in stages of being a leprosy colony and hospital to a leprosy rehabilitation center providing physical and occupational therapy. Their goal is to empower these patients to attain their maximum potential physically and to be psychologically healthy with a sense of worth and self acceptance, and to be able to live productive lives with acceptance and dignity in their own community"

In the News ... "Community mobilizes to keep gospel theater in business"

By Sara Higgins

Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND, TEXAS -
Horses and cattle hardly took notice of a church bus arriving to their ranch in Post five years ago. They already had grown accustomed to weekend visitors like Midlander Colleen Todd, who had brought with her a group of Sunday schoolers.

A sign directed them off the highway to a mesquite-lined dirt road in Post - without it, they surely would have missed the turn. A shuttle ride from the parking lot led them to an indoor live performance center, Ragtown Gospel Theater. Envisioned by two brothers, their wives and families, the 400-seat theater serves to entertain as well as minister to those who are willing to make the trip.

Word from Uganda: "New Year. New Resolutions."

Missionary teacher Natalie Rolfe writes, "'When He calls me, I will answer ... I'll be somewhere working for my Lord.' My call was Mbale, Uganda and that is where I have returned to serve for another year. Specifically, I am teaching phonics at Lulwanda Children's Home, an orphanage and school for 90 kids." Natalie also keeps an online journal of her service at the weblog, When He calls me, I will answer ...

New Year. New Resolutions.

New year. New resolutions.

But realistically, those never really last. Being inspired by a friend who faithfully blogged every Monday during his time in Uganda, I made the resolution that I would do the same and set a night. Obviously I have failed at that because this is my first post since the new year started. Maybe I can aim for once a month?

Midland Group Offers "Prayer Band That Started a Revolution"

The China Aid Association is a non-profit Christian organization - based in Midland, Texas - with a mission to uncover and reveal the truth about religious persecution in China, focusing especially on the unofficial church. They do this, they explain in their website, by exposing the abuses, encouraging the abused and equipping the saints to advance the kingdom of God throughout China.

Issued by ChinaAid ...

"This prayer band has been declared illegal in China."

"Chinese police have stopped people on the streets and taken the bands off their wrists. Some have been interrogated and arrested; at least three families were evicted from their homes—for the government, the prayer band is a symbol of revolution."

"We thank everyone across the U.S. and around the world who answered the call to wear a 'Pray for China' prayer band and pray during the Olympics. Your willingness to stand with Chinese house church Christians encouraged them as they also wore prayer bands and prayed for their country. Their commitment came with a cost. Read more."

"Yet, house church Christians refuse to be intimidated. They say that prayer for China is even more critical now that the world is no longer watching. Persecution has increased. Will you join in this revolution of prayer for China?"

"They can arrest me or put me in prison, but I'm not going to stop praying for China. Although the prayer band is banned in China, prayer can never be banned. I am asking every Christian to support believers in China by wearing a prayer band." - a prominent house church leader

"At this crucial time, will you partner in prayer? And, will you please forward this information to others who will want to pray for the persecuted in China."

By Meredith Moriak
Reporter
Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Numbers were the subject of conversation Tuesday night at the Cogdell Learning Center as representatives from the education and health and human services sectors came together to discuss how state budget cuts have affected them locally.

Though the budgets and programs offered by the four organizations vary, all entities reported the number of caseloads, clients and students are increasing, while the funds in place to run the programs are stagnant or decreasing.

"As Midland's population grows, more people are coming in and we're being expected to serve more people with the same funding," said Joanne Mundy, a Department of State Health Services program specialist. "...There is absolutely no caseload growth funding in our budgets."

Mundy was one of four panelists at the community forum hosted by the Midland Association of Churches, League of Women Voters, Midland College and United Way of Midland.

The forum was established because local organizations need to know what they can do to help, said Edna Hibbitts of the Midland Association of Churches.

The interfaith event, which was hosted at First Baptist Church, aimed to promote dialogue and understanding among different faiths, organizers and participants said.

Other speakers Tuesday night were the Rev. Randel Everett of First Baptist Church in Midland, Rabbi Holly Cohn of Temple Beth El in Odessa, Imam Wazir Ali of the Houston Masjid of Al-Islam and Masjid Al-Qur'an and Monsignor James Bridges of St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Midland. First Presbyterian Church of Midland is inviting the public to visit its gallery during its latest exhibit, "The Father and His Two Sons: The Art of Forgiveness." The collection of images, which opened Wednesday and will continue through April 8, features works by various artists depicting the parable of the Prodigal Son from the Gospel of Luke. In the story, the younger of two sons wastes the inheritance given to him, but after repenting and returning home is welcomed with open arms by his father.

"It's our belief that all the various senses help us connect better with our relationship with Christ," said the Rev. Mary Beth Anton, parish associate at First Presbyterian. The artwork will be featured in the church's Garden Gallery located outside of the sanctuary. In the past, the gallery space has featured photography and artwork from missionaries, local artists, as well as artwork from children as a way of expressing their own faith.

PRESBYTERY OF ALASKA - The Tlingits chose well when they located the village of Kake on the north shore of Keku Strait. Salmon runs in the streams, clamming flats, a sheltered moorage, and Southern exposure capture the richness of southeast Alaska and the traditional lifestyle of its Native peoples. When evangelists came to Kake, the gospel was received with joy. Kake Memorial Church was founded in 1912 and nurtured a host of Tlingit teachers, evangelists, and pastors.

Once home to a thriving cannery and fishing fleet, Kake has seen many leave their traditional home to seek work, and the village is now half its former size. Elders continued to worship each Lord's Day, struggled to maintain their church, and prayed that God would sustain them and bless them with a pastor.

In the News ... "Sherwood Church clothing the community"

By Lyxan Toledanes
Reporter
Odessa American

WEST TEXAS - The premise of clothing is simple – to cover up the human body. But to many people, clothing can mean different things, whether it’s an extension of their personality or their uniform for work or school.

At the Sherwood Church of Christ, clothes transcend their inherent meaning to become a form of community outreach.

For nearly three months, members at Sherwood have been building a clothes closet based on clothes closets found at Ector County Independent School District junior highs for parents who cannot afford to buy standard attire uniforms.

The closet, however, is more than stacks of polos and slacks, and ranges in attire for the entire family.

The idea for the clothing ministry began as an in-church ministry for church members in need of Sunday-best clothes but has since expanded to be available to anyone in Odessa who is in need.

In southwestern Pennsylvania, Washington Presbytery is putting the gospel in the hands of young adults. UPPER OHIO VALLEY PRESBYTERY, OHIO AND WEST VIRGINIA - Upper Ohio Valley Presbytery's (UOVP) mission projects have a new emphasis. In the past, mission for the presbytery had been "let's go in and make ourselves known for a week and then disappear," but the winds of change have been blowing.

In September 2010, six members of the presbytery flew to Malawi to begin talking with the people of Domasi Presbytery, Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP). At the end of their stay, several partnership agreements were signed, and UOVP now has sister churches in Africa. By Gabriella Lopez

Odessa American

MIDLAND, TEXAS - As only a West Texas interfaith panel could do, a Baptist minister and a Muslim imam joked with each other about a familiar topic: football.

Originally from El Paso, and currently working with two Houston mosques, Imam Wazir Ali said he played football in El Paso and when he approached the First Baptist Church of Midland, he recognized the football stadium nearby.

“I’ll say it was heartwarming,” Ali said.

Ali and the Rev. Randel Everett of Midland’s First Baptist Church were two of five spiritual leaders who kicked off the Permian Basin’s second annual interfaith panel Tuesday evening. The others panelists included Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami of Kauai’s Hindu Monestary in Hawaii, the Rev. James Bridges of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Midland and Rabbi Holly Cohn of Temple Beth-El in Odessa.

Dr. Padmaja Patel initiated both Tuesday’s panel and the inaugural interfaith panel last April, both of which were well attended.

In the News ... "Pastor celebrates 30 years"

By Lyxan Toledanes

WEST TEXAS - As the son and grandson of ministers, you could say it’s in the Rev. R.T. McNeil’s blood to lead a church.

But the longtime minister at St. James Baptist Church didn’t always want a life preaching behind the pulpit.

“It was something far from my mind. I had aspirations (to be) a professional quarterback,” McNeil said.

Though his dreams of playing on the gridiron have long passed, McNeil has accomplished 30 years as the lead pastor of St. James Baptist.

Church members are celebrating the tenure of McNeil and his wife, Amye Lee Jones McNeil, Wednesday through March 11. The celebration will feature pastors from around Texas, McNeil’s sister, gospel singer Rikki McNeil, and the pastor’s son, Timothy McNeil.

PRESBYTERY OF REDSTONE, PENNSYLVANIA - In a combined project, two of the Presbytery of Redstone's main missions - Pine Springs Camp and the Sudan Mission Partnership - lent support to each other during the summer camping season. To celebrate the churches' partnership with the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church (SPEC) and to educate campers about the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, a "Sudan Mission Cabin" was created from one of the extra cabins at the camp.

ChinaAid: Latest Issue of Chinese Law & Religion Monitor (July-Dec. 2011) Now Available Online

Latest Issue of Chinese Law & Religion Monitor (July-Dec. 2011) Now Available Online
Distributed by ChinaAid, February, 2012 ...

"In the second half of 2011, human rights, the rule of law and freedom of religion all continued to deteriorate. Large numbers of rights activists and political dissidents were silenced as a result of the cruel persecution they suffered in the first six months of the year. Regrettably, in the face of the Chinese Communists’ almost savage “big stick” dollar-diplomacy, the heads of most governments in the international community have maintained a public attitude of cowardly silence and trying to curry favor with the Chinese Communist government." Invitation to Prayer

Faces of Children is an ecumenical prayer ministry under the auspices of First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas. Our mission is to initiate ministries of prayer for children in churches, communities, and neighborhoods. In doing so, we seek to provide an opportunity for people of God to join together, learn about children and their needs throughout the world, and celebrate Christ's love (especially as it relates to children).

The Honesty of Compassion

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned ..." Luke 6:37

"Compassion means to become close to the one who suffers. But we can come close to another person only when we are willing to become vulnerable ourselves. A compassionate person says: 'I am your brother; I am your sister; I am human, fragile, and mortal, just like you. I am not scandalized by your tears, nor afraid of your pain. I too have wept. I too have felt pain.' We can be with the other only when the other ceases to be 'other' and becomes like us.

This, perhaps, is the main reason that we sometimes find it easier to show pity than compassion. The suffering person calls us to become aware of our own suffering. How can I respond to someone's loneliness unless am in touch with my own experience of loneliness? How can I be close to handicapped people when I refuse to acknowledge my own handicaps? How can I be with the poor when I am unwilling to confess my own poverty?"

I must do some things to fulfill my duties. But isn't it time I examined my routines and cut out the things I do just to stay busy? Lord, help me this Lent to begin to focus my attention on the important things."
Renewed for Life, Daily Lenten Meditations from the works of Henri J.M. Nouwen, edited by Mark Neilsen

In the News... "Former pro softball player to share story at FCA event"

By Sara Higgins

Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Fastpitch softball is what Charity Butler does, but it's not who she is.

That distinction wasn't always clear to the professional softball player, who said she used to allow the pressure of defining herself by the sport she played take over her enjoyment of her gifts and talents.

"Most the time as competitors, we're pleasers and we want to be winners; we place so much of our work and our self-value in our achievement, our accomplishments," she said.

Butler will share her story at the Midland United Girls Softball complex 6:30 p.m. Wednesday during an evening that will include time for clinics, autographs and fellowship. The event is free and open to the public. There also will be a Q&A session with Butler and a band for musical entertainment. The event is hosted by Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and will be similar to the organization's annual Field of Faith events, according to Lee High School FCA sponsor Ken Marks. Anyone is welcome to attend the event, which is geared toward softball players of all ages.

MINUTE FOR MISSION: CELEBRATE THE GIFTS OF WOMEN - Raised and nurtured in a Benedictine convent, the 12th-century prophet Hildegard of Bingen became a prolific writer of visions, songs, and poetry. Her unique, mystical voice still calls us - especially her sisters - to listen and to write. Lois Heger of San Antonio, Texas, is one contemporary heir to Hildegard's call to write. So is Mary Louise (Mel) Bringle of Brevard, North Carolina. Lois is a psychotherapist, grandmother, Presbyterian elder, pastor's wife, and writer of short stories, poems, and children's stories. Mel is a Christian feminist hymnwriter, Presbyterian elder, professor at Brevard College, and chair of the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song, which is charged with producing a new Presbyterian hymn book.

MINUTE FOR MISSION: WORLD DAY OF PRAYER - How many times through the years have I heard myself saying, "Yes, I will pray for you and your situation." That heartfelt promise was made with a sincere desire to follow through, yet often the day would get away from me, and my prayer for that person and that specific situation somehow would not happen. It's not that I didn't mean it when I said it; it's not that I didn't want to pray, as I have seen the power of prayer and know the blessings of intercessory prayer. Why was it so hard to actually pray? Was it really just the busy-ness of the day?
