Friday Story: “Out of the Darkness”

Diomede (59) has hardly ever been outdoors for the better part of 10 years.

A terrible road accident left him with paralysis from the waist down. He couldn’t move without assistance, and at 154 pounds, he was too heavy for anyone to carry.

Unable to cope with their new reality, Diomede’s wife abandoned him and their then-16-year-old son shortly after the accident ...

• A warming station is what many have needed in our community – some for an hour and some for an entire, bitterly cold night

By Stewart Doreen, Editor
Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND, TEXAS - “We have brought the people over here and loved on them," said Roy Smith, True-Lite Christian Fellowship pastor. "And I mean, they are God's people, man. I don't care what their condition is. I don't care that they’re less fortunate. They belong to the Lord. He loves them just as much as he does you and me. He does.”

Does one need a better reason to provide shelter, food, warmth and compassion to the homeless and Midland residents in need? Pastor Roy Smith and Carla Smith don’t think so.

That is why when the temperatures dropped to record-breaking levels and a community was paralyzed by ice and wind chill, True-Lite was open, welcoming and ready to “just love on these people with the love of God” ...

“Next time we get in a situation like this, we need to be proactive”

By Stewart Doreen, Editor
Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND, TEXAS - There are often people that I meet who make me feel I don’t do as much as I should be doing.

That is certainly is the case with Karl Boroski.

While I worry about getting a little extra sleep or catching up with recorded television shows, he’s out raising money to pay off students’ lunch debt and buying dozens of sleeping bags for people without a bed -- or home for that matter.

This week is another example where I really just don’t measure up. When I called the executive director Rope Youth and Backyard Midland Ministryn>, he was buying pillows to take over to True-Lite Christian Fellowship's cold weather shelter ...

From ECPAT-USA ... "The Indictment of Peter Nygard"

ECPAT USA is part of a global network of organizations and individuals working together for the elimination of child prostitution, child pornography and the trafficking of children for sexual purposes. It seeks to encourage the world community to ensure that children everywhere enjoy their fundamental rights free and secure from all forms of commercial sexual exploitation.

"SThe Indictment of Peter Nygard”

Dear Friends of ECPAT-USA,

Federal prosecutors in New York City charged Peter Nygard with sex trafficking, racketeering, and other offenses, The New York Times reported. The Canadian fashion mogul’s alleged crimes involve the exploitation of dozens of victims, another shocking example of a powerful man preying upon children in vulnerable positions.

According to the indictment, Nygard targeted girls from “disadvantaged economic backgrounds,” some of whom had a history of abuse. When these girls fought back, they were assaulted or sometimes even drugged “to ensure their compliance with Nygard’s sexual demands.” The Times also reported that Nygard often portrayed himself as a “playboy,” surrounding himself with young women and teenage girls. While he may have viewed the adolescents he abused as a way to access the “fountain of youth,” the allegations suggest that he was entirely unconcerned about robbing his victims of their own childhoods.

After decades of publicly flaunting his predatory acts, Nygard’s arrest this week is an important step toward justice for his victims. But, as with other alleged high profile pedophiles, Nygard could not have built an exploitative empire without significant support from others, and ECPAT-USA demands that federal prosecutors also investigate those who aided and abetted any criminal activity connected to child exploitation. There must be a clear and consistent message from our government: no one, regardless of their privilege, has the right to consume children for their perverse sexual gratification. Until systemic and structural changes are made to end the demand for children’s bodies, we will continue to read tragic accounts of justice delivered too late for young victims.

Your support helps us to continue our meaningful work protecting children from the threat of sexual exploitation and trafficking. Together, let’s keep fighting to create a world where no child is bought, sold, or used for sex.
