In fact, for many like 18-year-old Albert Moya the charity serves as a place to call home when there’s nowhere else to turn to for help.

Today's Reading

Let us suppose we possess parts of a novel or a symphony. Someone now brings us a newly discovered piece of manuscript and says, ‘This is the missing part of the work. This is the chapter on which the whole plot of the novel really turned. This is the main theme of the symphony’. Our business would be to see whether the new passage, if admitted to the central place which the discoverer claimed for it, did actually illuminate all the parts we had already seen and ‘pull them together’. Nor should we be likely to go very far wrong. The new passage, if spurious, however attractive it looked at the first glance, would become harder and harder to reconcile with the rest of the work the longer we considered the matter. But if it were genuine then at every fresh hearing of the music or every fresh reading of the book, we should find it settling down, making itself more at home and eliciting significance from all sorts of details in the whole work which we had hitherto neglected. Even though the new central chapter or main theme contained great difficulties in itself, we should still think it genuine provided that it continually removed difficulties elsewhere. Something like this we must do with the doctrine of the Incarnation. Here, instead of a symphony or a novel, we have the whole mass of our knowledge. The credibility will depend on the extent to which the doctrine, if accepted, can illuminate and integrate that whole mass. It is much less important that the doctrine itself should be fully comprehensible. We believe that the sun is in the sky at midday in summer not because we can clearly see the sun (in fact, we cannot) but because we can see everything else.

From ChinaAid: "Shandong students to be expelled for private prayer group"

The China Aid Association is a non-profit Christian organization - based in Midland, Texas - with a mission to uncover and reveal the truth about religious persecution in China, focusing especially on the unofficial church. They do this, they explain in their website, by exposing the abuses, encouraging the abused and equipping the saints to advance the kingdom of God throughout China.

Faces of Children: Prayer Concerns for This Week

Faces of Children is an ecumenical prayer ministry under the auspices of First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas. Our mission is to initiate ministries of prayer for children in churches, communities, and neighborhoods. In doing so, we seek to provide an opportunity for people of God to join together, learn about children and their needs throughout the world, and celebrate Christ's love (especially as it relates to children).

Hi Friends,

I pray this finds you gearing up for a wonderful time celebrating the birth of our Savior with your friends and family this week! We will not meet for a time of corporate prayer this week, but as you go through your Christmas celebrations, I hope you hold the children of the world close to your heart and up to the Father. We will also not meet next week, nor will I send out a prayer email, as the church offices are closed. See you January 6.

All the best,
Carrie

And she's calling out from a sea of hurt
O come, O come, Emmanuel"

Oh come, oh come Emmanuel... to your children who are displaced, pushed from their homes by conflict and terror and turned away from where they seek refuge.

Oh come, oh come Emmanuel... to your children who are surrounded by disease and despair, watching their families suffer and facing an uncertain future.

Oh come, oh come Emmanuel... to your children who are taught to hate and kill, forced to be warriors when their innocence should be protected.

Oh come, oh come Emmanuel... to your children who do not know the love and nurture of a family, growing up without an understanding of their own worth.

Oh come, oh come Emmanuel... to your children who are forced to work, often without pay or basic safety protections, slaves to the greed and evil of man.

Oh come, oh come Emmanuel... to your children who know loneliness and depression and isolation, growing up to believe they have no value.

Oh come, oh come Emmanuel... to your children who live through natural disasters, feeling the ground shake and their lives crumble.

TO MARY WILLIS SHELBURNE: On the need to take care of oneself and not of things.

8 January 1963

I don’t mind betting that the things which ‘had to be done’ in your room didn’t really have to be done at all. Very few things really do. After one bad night with my heart—not so bad as yours, for it was only suffocation, not pain—my doctor strictly rationed me on stairs, and I have obeyed him. Of course it is hideously inconvenient: but that can be put up with and must. What worse than inconvenience would have resulted if you had left those ‘things’ undone? Do take more care of yourself and less of ‘things’!

Still snow-bound.

C.S. Lewis Daily - Today's Reading

Today's Reading

As soon as the wood was silent again Susan and Lucy crept out onto the open hilltop. The moon was getting low and thin clouds were passing across her, but still they could see the shape of the Lion lying dead in his bonds. And down they both knelt in the wet grass and kissed his cold face and stroked his beautiful fur—what was left of it—and cried till they could cry no more. And then they looked at each other and held each other’s hands for mere loneliness and cried again; and then again were silent. At last Lucy said, “I can’t bear to look at that horrible muzzle. I wonder, could we take it off?”

So they tried. And after a lot of working at it (for their fingers were cold and it was now the darkest part of the night) they succeeded. And when they saw his face without it they burst out crying again and kissed it and fondled it and wiped away the blood and the foam as well as they could. And it was all more lonely and hopeless and horrid than I know how to describe.

“I wonder, could we untie him as well?” said Susan presently. But the enemies, out of pure spitefulness, had drawn the cords so tight that the girls could make nothing of the knots.

I hope no one who reads this book has been quite as miserable as Susan and Lucy were that night; but if you have been—if you’ve been up all night and cried till you have no more tears left in you—you will know that there comes in the end a sort of quietness. You feel as if nothing was ever going to happen again. At any rate that was how it felt to these two. Hours and hours seemed to go by in this dead calm, and they hardly noticed that they were getting colder and colder.

From ServLife International ... "Merry Christmas!"

ServLife International is a movement defined by values of God’s kingdom, not programs built around human efforts and activities. The reign and rule of God should be made apparent to every person on the planet, despite their religion, race or socioeconomic status. We believe that issues of justice are inseparable from the good news that Jesus Christ came to proclaim. ServLife exists to take the gospel of Christ and the hope of a better, more just, world to the lives of people we touch. This happens through individual contributions of time, creativity, resources and dreams.

Merry Christmas!

The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and they will call him Emmanuel, which means “God with us.”
(Matthew 1:23)

Jesus came to be with us, and through his Spirit, is still with us. In our pain, in our joy, in our mundane. In everything God is with us and nothing can shake that reality.

As you celebrate Christmas, may we be reminded of the presence of Jesus and may we be fully present with others. Have a wonderful holiday season.

Merry Christmas!
