Gang retaliations had begun and in the midst of the tension, not one church big enough to host the funeral was willing to open its doors. The family turned to the Presbyterian church, the home of Japanese Americans who for decades have lived in the area with the African American community. As neighbors they sat down together, not knowing that they were being led.
