Founded in 2001, Free Wheelchair Mission is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to providing wheelchairs for the impoverished disabled in developing nations. Headquartered in Irvine, California, FWM works around the world in partnership with a vast network of humanitarian, faith-based and government organizations, sending wheelchairs to hundreds of thousands of disabled people, providing not only the gift of mobility, but of dignity, independence, and hope.

Laurie Schoendorfer, co-founder of Free Wheelchair Mission, dedicated civil servant, grandmother of two, beloved mother of three, faithful wife of 42 years, and daughter of God, passed away in the arms of her three daughters and husband, Don Schoendorfer, in Santa Ana, California, on May 27. She was 69 ...

In the late 1990s, as Don worked on the first prototype of the Gen_1 wheelchair, filling the family’s garage with close to 100 of them, it was Laurie who gently encouraged him to go on a mission trip to distribute the wheelchairs. And when Don returned, contemplating starting Free Wheelchair Mission, it was Laurie who gave him the confidence and support to take that leap of faith ...
