FPC-Midland Belize Mission: Bringing the World, Painting It, ThenRolling It Around

From January 4 through January 11, 2014, a team  from 1st Presbyterian Church-Midland will be traveling to the Central American country of Belize, and working with The Word at Work ministry. This will be an opportunity to reach out and share the gospel with the people of Belize while working side-by-side with the local community and The Word at Work staff on a much-needed construction project.

Bringing the World, Painting It, Then Rolling It Around

One of our activities at El Progresso Government School in involves a little geography, a little art and a LOT of fun for both he team and the kiddos.

It all revolves around an 'Earth Ball,' a very large, inflatable ball with a thick, paintable outer skin. I was not familiar with the Earth Ball when it first came up in our team meetings ... but I've learned more about it since our arrival in Belize, and it's a neat idea. Zareyma, Morgan and Casey have been working on this particular activity, and it's been fun seeing the response they get from the school children.

First, you inflate it. That thick outer skin I mentioned is - quite literally - a blank canvas ... and that's where the school children first get involved. Students from each of the classes at EPGS take turns painting that outer skin, outlining the oceans and continents, then filling the spaces with the paint ... and getting an out-of-the-ordinary geography lesson in the process. Light blue for the coastal waters, dark blue for the deep seas, green, brown and yellow for the continents and islands, with special attention paid to Belize and Texas.

It's one thing to study a globe ... it's something else altogether to make one!

But this not a globe you put on your desk ... even if you had a desk big enough to hold it. This is a big, outdoor, rolling globe that you play with ... and that's where the students at EPGS step-up once again, moving mountains (and oceans, islands, ice caps, continents), and having fun in the process ... that part is scheduled for tomorrow. I'll post some more photos then.

In the meantime, please keep El Progresso Government School in your prayers. Encourage the students as they begin the new year. And encourage the faculty and staff, some of whom go to great lengths, sometimes under challenging circumstances in order to get to work each day.

Is there something you'd like to ask any of our mission team members, or our pastor?
