"PHYGITAL" WORKSHOP - As many churches navigate the both/and world of hybrid ministry, where in-person and online worship coexist, there’s a word to keep in mind: “phygital.” I didn’t invent it. It was coined in 2013 to describe creating a seamless experience that is the best of both the digital and physical realms. And there lies the goal — and the challenge — for our churches, that of creating hybrid worship where two intrinsically different environments come together seamlessly ...

PEACE - If you ask a Presbyterian to define “peace,” you’ll get lots of answers, and they’re mostly all correct. Peace is tranquility and calm and quiet and respect and all those things that we ask of our children, at least for a few blessed moments every now and then. Peace is well-being, wholeness, health, safety, security, civility and all those things we expect from our communities. Peace is diplomatic treaties, international accords, global conventions, mutual aid, disaster relief and all those things that create understanding among nations. Peace finds its expression in many ways, takes on a variety of forms and is evident in both the most intimate and expansive parts of life. And as people of faith, we believe peace — in all its expressions and forms — is a gift from God ...

Friday Story: “Supply Chain Challenges”

In August, we first brought you news about the challenges we face with the shipping industry.

This topic has increasingly made its way into mainstream news as scores of ships idle off the coast of Long Beach, California and other congested ports, waiting for a chance to unload containers of goods. As you might have noticed, this worldwide disruption in the supply chain has resulted in a shortage of many items at your local stores.

And now, not only has the logistics and inventory side of our work been challenged, but so has the production and manufacturing side ...

In the News ... "Help the needy this Christmas season'"

• Empty Stocking Fund celebrates 27 years

Staff Report
The Odessa American

ODESSA, TEXAS - Bringing joy to a child’s life during the holidays is as simple as a quick donation and you can do it by mail, in person or online.

The Empty Stocking Fund will celebrate 27 years this holiday season when it kicks off on Thanksgiving Day.

The Empty Stocking Fund is an annual fundraising effort by the Odessa American and Salvation Army of Odessa.

In a pleasant surprise, the Fund is off to a great start thanks to two early generous donations. The Wood Family Foundation donated $2,500 and the Hoiles family donated $350 early in honor of the late Bill Salter, a former Odessa American publisher who died this year. Salter started the Empty Stocking Fund in Odessa.

Donations to the Empty Stocking Fund stay in Odessa and help the neediest among us. Donors may drop off or mail donations at the Salvation Army, 810 E. 11th St., or the Odessa American, 700 N. Grant (Bank of America Building), Suite 800. Online donations are accepted at tinyurl.com/ss9yv7yt.

Funds raised purchase ingredients for a holiday meal and small gifts for children and needy senior citizens. Families apply for the help through the Salvation Army and staff members verify the needs of those applying.

Odessa American Editor Laura Dennis said this year’s goal is $100,000, which is the same as last year. Odessans were generous last year, although the goal was not met. In 2020, $55,054.29 was raised. After that first year of COVID, donations were down, but both The Salvation Army and the OA were grateful for the funds.

While 2021 has also been a tough year with economic woes as well as fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are hopeful that Odessans will rally and help their neighbors by giving.

A number of Odessans are struggling this year and a happy holiday could be out of reach for them.

That’s where you and the Empty Stocking Fund come in.

“When you donate to the Empty Stocking campaign, you are helping struggling families by taking one less thing they have to worry about off their plate and give families the opportunity to have a peaceful Christmas,” Dennis said.

This is the 27th year of the Empty Stocking Fund and the total raised since it started is $2,114,251.13. All funds go to that good holiday meal and gifts under the Christmas tree.

Gifts were handed out to about 280 Odessa families through both the Angel Tree and Empty Stocking Fund programs at Odessa’s Salvation Army last year just before Christmas.

Last year, 1,200 children had a gift under the tree thanks to your generous giving.

Major Laura Melendez of Odessa’s Salvation Army said there are many needs during this second pandemic year. She said they expect to help 300 families with about 1,350 children this year.

“The Empty Stocking is unique to The Salvation Army in Odessa as it adds additional funds to facilitate providing toys and food boxes to families in need during Christmas,” Melendez said. “The way the Empty Stocking fundraiser involves donors in a direct way by sharing their resources with those less fortunate is amazing.”

This will be the first year for Melendez at Odessa’s Salvation Army.

“I’ve served in the Salvation Army for 18 years and I’ve never seen such a big fundraiser to help the Angel Tree program, Empty Stocking is extraordinary; I’m impressed that the Odessa American is investing in the needs of those less fortunate in the community in such a powerful way. I’m looking forward to working alongside the Empty Stocking fundraiser and express my deepest gratitude to those donors who contribute to make it such a successful fundraiser.”

This year’s fundraising drive starts on Thanksgiving Day. Daily stories start on Thanksgiving Day in the OA and include real situations of those who have gone through the Empty Stocking Fund process and have provided proof of need. The OA uses fake names, but real situations.

The OA also runs daily totals to keep up with how much money has been raised and how much is still needed to fill the Empty Stocking. Right before Christmas, the funds are used to purchase food and small gifts for children and seniors.

“We know there are many, many wonderful charities out there that do great work,” Dennis said. “But we are asking our friends and neighbors to again help The Salvation Army make sure that the neediest of Odessans know the joy of a great Christmas meal. We also want to help children celebrate the joy of the season with small gifts.”

The needs are dire this year with the COVID impact still going on. “COVID has increased the needs of the less fortunate in all areas as we have seen an increase for assistance in our social services,” Melendez said. “Really, we continue to provide the same services, it’s just a little different the way we provide the service. For the Angel Tree program, we have implemented taking applications online rather than in person, so an online registration website has been created where parents enter all the household information and upload the documents needed (such as proof of address and valid ID). Some clients are asked to share their reason for applying; in our office, we verify their documents and approve them for the program; once approved, parents are given an appointment and time to pick-up their toys and food boxes.”

But bringing joy to the holiday is the reason for giving.

“You have an opportunity to bring joy to a child in need. Please give because it will benefit those from our very own community; it’s like helping a family member. And remember that giving is biblical: “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7)

The Salvation Army is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Call 432-332-0738.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP:

Ring the Bell: The Salvation Army needs volunteer bell ringers this Christmas season. Groups can sign up now to ring bells at a number of locations in Ector County. One afternoon of bell ringing during the Christmas Kettle Campaign can raise enough money for The Salvation Army to shelter a homeless person for four nights and provide 12 hot meals. To become a volunteer bell ringer call 332-0738 or visit www.registertoring.com to sign up.

In the News ... "Season of Warmth to return to Jesus House"

OA Photo by Eli Hartman
“We were so blessed this year”

By Michael Bauer, Reporter
Odessa American

ODESSA, TEXAS - After the success of last year’s event, the Jesus House Odessa is back with its Season of Warmth.

Last year, the Jesus House had its inaugural event and this year, they have decided to bring it back.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Jesus House of Odessa, which is located on 1335 E. 6th Street.

Free backpacks will be loaded with goodies to anyone in need and a free enchilada meal will be served as well.

Faith Temple Fellowship Pastor Donny Kyker says this event is a way of telling the community thanks for all the help during the year.

“Anybody that comes not only gets a full Mexican meal but they also get a backpack,” Kyker said. “Everyone gets a backpack. If you’re homeless, you get a backpack that has thermals in it and they’ll also get a tent sleeping bag and things like that. There are goodies in each backpack. If you’re not homeless, you get a backpack as well and in that one, you don’t get thermals but all the others like snacks, gloves, hand warmers, things like that. It’s our way to say thanks for the community for all their work throughout the year.”

In last year’s first edition of the event, Kyker said that they had about 275 people come through.

“We’re not real sure about the numbers for this year but we’re preparing for bigger numbers but you never know in this day and time,” Kyker said. “People are still a little skittish about COVID. Last year, when we opened up, more people were able to get out of their home, so to speak. People were moving around more freely after being cooped up. We’re not sure how the crowd will be this year but we’re preparing for 300.”

While the backpacks for this year are already made, Kyker said that anybody who wants to donate backpacks can still do so.

“We have hundreds of backpacks so it’s not a big need that we have but they can help us replenish for next year,” Kyker said. “So what we’d do is put those up in storage for the next Season of Warmth which will be the day before Thanksgiving and that way, we’ll be prepared again and work ahead of the game. We’ve been working on this for months to be prepared for next week.”

Kyker acknowledged all those who have helped put together this year’s Season of Warmth.

“We were so blessed this year,” Kyker said. “Mid-Cities Church does a serve day here with us and they came in and we had a list of items that we needed for each backpack and it was like an assembly line and they prepared probably over 200 backpacks that day, if not more. Then we have people in the community who will be bringing us enchiladas, beans and rice. Monday, my staff and I will be making more beans and rice for that as well.”

There will be about 20 volunteers helping out this year on Wednesday and Kyker says that should be enough.

“We don’t need any more volunteers,” Kyker said. “We have our mayor and some city council members and our county judge, they’re coming out. They were here last year and they’ll be here again this year. We’re excited about that” ...

In the News ... "Timothy stalwart for early church"

Painting by Willem Drost
• Apostle Paul’s helper particularly influential in Ephesus

By Bob Campbell, Reporter
Odessa American

ODESSA, TEXAS - Having been a key assistant to the strong-willed and sometimes abrasive Apostle Paul, Timothy had a long career as an evangelist and helped carry Christianity from Judaism to the Gentile world.

The Revs. David Chisham and Mike Atkins say Timothy’s ability to work with Paul during Paul’s second and third missionary journeys prepared him to become a leader after the apostle was martyred between 64 and 67 A.D. in Rome.

“Timothy gets thrown into the deep end as a representative of the second generation of Christianity,” said the Rev. Chisham, pastor of the First Christian Church in Midland. “With a Jewish mother and a Greek or Roman father, he is a bridge to second generation Jewish and Gentile Christianity.”

Noting that Paul wrote the New Testament books of First and Second Timothy to his advise his assistant about Timothy’s ministry in Ephesus, Chisham said, “I wish we had more of a story about him.

“I assume he was a very good companion for Paul. He must have felt pulled between the two different directions as he worked farther and farther out from the base of Jerusalem, but he still managed to find a way through. Paul circumcised him and I wonder how he felt about being asked to go through that particular surgery.

“Judging from what Paul had to say about him in First and Second Timothy and what was written about him in the Book of Acts, I think he was a good leader who was very committed to spreading the Gospel,” Chisham said. “He had a long career and was one of Paul’s most important workers along with Titus, Luke, Silas and Barnabas.”

The Bible doesn’t say what happened to Timothy in later life, but some scholars believe he was serving as the 80-year-old bishop of Ephesus when he tried to stop a procession in which an idol was being worshipped and that he was stoned in 97 A.D. Ephesus was a major city in ancient Greece whose ruins are near the western Turkish town of Selcuk.

Paul’s second missionary journey with Timothy and other helpers was to Derbe, Lystra, Phrygia, Galatia, Troas, Macedonia, Phillipi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, Corinth, Ephesus, Cenchrea, Caesarea and Syrian Antioch. Their third was to Galatia, Phrygia, Ephesus, Macedonia, Troas, Miletus, Caesarea, Jerusalem, Miletus and Tyre.

The Rev. Atkins, pastor of Kingston Avenue Baptist Church, said Paul “trusted Timothy to locate Christian believers in the places where he went.

“Looking through the scriptures, we see that he was a humble man, soft-spoken but true to the Lord and true to the scriptures as well,” Atkins said. “We know Timothy had no role in writing Paul’s letters because church history tells us that Paul had a secretary with him who wrote everything down ...
