HAITI - Youth are an important part of the work that the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) supports in Haiti through FONDAMA, a member of the Presbyterian Hunger Program’s Joining Hands network. FONDAMA is made up of 11 Haitian grassroots and development organizations working together to address root causes of hunger and poverty in Haiti.
One way its leaders do this is through a new program that builds up members’ capacity to produce healthy food sustainably. Participants improve the soil around their homes by creating compost out of vegetable and animal waste. They also learn helpful techniques, such as planting and using Moringa oleifera, a shrubby tree that produces highly nutritious leaves, and creating vegetable gardens by turning old tires inside out and filling them with soil, sand, and manure.
