From @austinseminary ... "The Reed" for May 2022

A Message from the Presidential Search Committee

TAs we rejoice in the implications of Christ’s resurrection, we look to the future with hope. To that end, the Presidential Search Committee continues to work together diligently and winsomely (!). We have been in conversation with exceptional candidates who we believe have many gifts to lead this seminary into the next chapter of its mission. I want to underscore the collective wisdom, insight, and gifts of the search committee as we move forward in this time to discern the next leader of this theological school and beloved community. As our work is nearing fruition, we hope to bring a recommendation of a nominee for President to the Board of Trustees sometime this summer. In the meantime, as we enter into this important and critical time in our discernment together as a committee, we covet your prayers, we ask for your continued support, and we join you with our gratitude for outstanding leadership these last twenty years, and more to come. If you have further questions about the search, please contact us at presidentsearch@austinseminary.edu.

Gratefully yours,
The Reverend Chris Currie
Chair, Presidential Search Committee

2022 Chidester Preaching Award given to Kevin Ireland

Kevin Ireland is the winner of the annual Chidester Preaching Award, which comes with a $5000 stipend. The award was established in 2010 by the First Presbyterian Church of Malvern, Arkansas, and is given each year to a graduating senior who shows the greatest potential in the area of preaching. Made upon the recommendation of the Seminary’s homiletics faculty, applicants are assessed on potential for preaching and for relating well to ministry contexts, character, demonstrated homiletics proficiency and distinction, vision for ministry—in particular preaching—and commitment to continuing education.

"Kevin preaches with sensitivity and imagination regarding how the text is still speaking into our lives today," says Dr. Carolyn Helsel, Associate Professor in the Blair Monie Distinguished Chair in Homiletics.

Kevin Ireland came to seminary from Emporia, Kansas, where he was a member of Emporia Presbyterian Church under the leadership of Austin Seminary alumna Phyllis Stutzman (MDiv’05). He is currently a pastoral intern at Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church in Austin, where he creates curricula and leadership for adult study hour and retreats, visits homebound members at long-term care facilities, writes liturgy, and preaches regularly in worship. Kevin will begin a pastoral residency at Westlake following his graduation this week.

"Our students care about each other, they care for the Seminary community, they care for the greater Austin community, they care for the Gospel. And they act that care out. Judging where the world is today, for me, that’s a relief."

Our new campus banners were inspired by the reflections of students and alumni on special places around campus. This month's banner is courtesy of Layton Williams-Berkes (MDiv’14) who shared a special moment on the bridge.
