SAN ANGELO, TEXAS - Mickaelle Germain buttoned and straightened a girl’s uniform.

“Go on, you’re done,” Germain said in Creole.

The next girl in line approached. Germain gave her a deworming pill to chew and instructions for medicine before adjusting the girl's uniform and hair and ushering her back to class.

Over the course of three days in March, Germain examined more than 300 students at the newly built David Steward Christian Institution for Boys and Girls in Onaville, Haiti. Germain, a nurse, is part of a medical mission funded by Ezra Visions Ministries, launched by San Angelo’s Ronnie Hawkin ...

MIDLAND, TEXAS - When 40 ninth-grade girls gathered on a Sunday in early February, they thought they would be painting houses for Christmas in Action. With temperatures near freezing, however, their plans fell through.

Instead of painting houses in Midland, the girls watched a video about people building houses in Haiti. Then they went from one house to the next in Grasslands Estates, asking for small donations.

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS - Bishop Michael Pfeifer of the Diocese of San Angelo recently returned from a visit to Haiti.

Throughout his service to the church, the bishop has worked as a missionary in Mexico and traveled to Africa, South America and other places around the world to help people are in need. He visited Haiti years before the January 2010 earthquake.

During his three-day trip in February, however, Pfeifer said he witnessed living conditions he never before had seen.

The school contacted the church about taking the dolls because they knew Mid-Cities was planning another trip. "Anything to bring smiles to those kids' faces would be wonderful," said Hollie Carrasco, who is making her first trip to Haiti with the team

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Rusk Elementary School third-grade teacher Katie Hinshaw had just finished teaching a science unit on forces that change a land -- such as earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes -- when disaster struck in Haiti.

Studying earthquakes at the time, Hinshaw's students got interested in what was happening on the Caribbean island nation. That got Rusk's 415 kindergarten through sixth-grade students into the spirit. They raised $1,596 and it was decided the funds would go toward water filters.

Counselor Mary Burrichter suggested the filters and contacted the Texas Baptist Men, who purchased the filters, made the delivery and sent back photos.

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Two 2-pound bags black or red beans, two 5-pound bags of long-grain rice, one 5-pound bag of flour, one 40-ounce plastic bottle of cooking oil, two 1-pound boxes of spaghetti noodles, one 40-ounce plastic jar of smooth peanut butter and one 20-ounce container of sugar.

For the past two or three weeks, these items have appeared on several Midlanders’ grocery lists as hundreds have contributed to the Southern Baptist initiative Buckets of Hope to help Haitian hurricane victims.

MIDLAND, TEXAS - It doesn’t seem like much, but things like beans, rice, pasta, and peanut butter are jam packed in a bucket will help a Haitian family not worry about food for several days.

“Just amazing to me,” Pastor Gary Redwine said, “For about 40$ with the contents of just one bucket we could feed a family.”

The youth group at the Alamo Heights Baptist Church says they realize how good their quality of life really is.

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Midland organization known throughout the country as the experts on helping children deal with grief is asked to travel to Haiti to help kids there re-build their lives.

In the aftermath 230,000 people have been confirmed dead since disaster struck seven weeks ago. Now, Rays of Hope, a local group that helps grieving children re-start their lives, is being asked to do the same thing for children in Haiti.
