Something New

For the next several months we will be having our Board write articles discussing the importance of going on a Mission trip. Our First writer is our Board Chairman Geoff Wright. Geoff has been on the board as our Chairman for several years.

Why Should my church consider an international mission trip? Praying Pelicans, an international mission organization, describes 7 reasons on their website for people and churches to consider international mission trips:

1. Connect with and support the global and the local church.
2. Go deeper with Christ.
3. International travel gives you a new worldview.
4. Develop new relationships with other Believers.
5. Make a lasting impact with the opportunity to develop long-term relationships.
6. Follow the Great Commission.
7. And finally, and most importantly, share the Gospel! International mission trips demonstrate the old saying that we are “to tell the world about Jesus, using words if necessary.”

Each month we will have different Board Members write about one of these topics. We look forward to the conversation this sparks.

Sending a Container

We love our Belizean partners, and as we get more connected with each of them we learn more about their needs. One way we meet the needs of our partners is by sending them equipment, supplies, furniture, and many other things they need. The best way to do this is by Shipping containers. This is a great way for you to help in a very tangible way as we get ready to send another container full of necessary items. We ask for donations to cover the cost of shipping a container to Belize.

This is the best way to get needed goods into the country to our partners. The total cost of shipping is $12,500. That seems unreasonable but the truth of the matter is that we are able to sometimes get over $100,000 worth of equipment in these shipping containers. So the $12,500 goes a very long way. Right now we have a $5000 matching gift. If you would like to give it would be a huge blessing. Please connect with us if you're willing to give towards the Shipping Container. We appreciate your help.

Belize Update from Chepito

Greetings from beautiful Belize. Wishing all our friends many blessings.

It's always a busy life here in Belize, and we do everything with joy for the Kingdom of God. We have helped some schools prepare for the new school year that started on September 4th. Some of our partners needed chairs or tables and we helped with what we could. many children also got well-needed school supplies and were extremely happy to start the year right. Supplies have also been delivered to many of our partners. Thanks to the good Lord we had a church partner that sent containers with different kinds of supplies and were able to help partners in Belize. A new sewing group started in a classroom in one of our high schools, sewing machines, and other supplies were donated including a weaving loom for this venture. We are also continuing work in the home for the elderly in Valley of Peace. We have been working on forming the beam and are now ready to pour the concrete. Churches in the valley will be coming together to do this job. Donations also went out in the form of bicycles to help fundraise for a family, of victims in a traffic accident.

Thank you for your prayers, Chepito

It is such an amazing experience to have all of you as partners, we are so grateful for your participation and look ahead as we continue to do the work that is before us. Please feel free to reach out and connect about anything you may have questions about or would like any further explanation.

WAW Wednesday ... "Finishing out the Summer"

"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. WAW Wednesday: "Finishing out the Summer"

This Summer has been Amazing!

So many teams have come to Belize this Summer!

Teams from Texas, Oklahoma, California, Mississippi, & Pennsylvania have had trips this summer. Here is a recap:

The Valley of Peace: Home built, Senior Living Center construction continues

Corozal: Work done at Jacob's Farm

Burial Grounds: A stage was built for a church and Bathroom was built at Ebeneezer, and an apartment started for a family as well.

Belize City: Funds Raised to begin a new Hospice Facility

8-Mile: Work done at First Stone Church for a Preschool start-up

Teams reconnecting with partners after COVID
New potential partner meetings
Teams experienced some local church services around the country
And so many lives were impacted.

God is working in so many of our partners' lives and answered prayers with teams coming and we are seeing new connections with partners all over Belize. We are amazed at how He has allowed us to see Him at Work and be involved in all He is doing in this amazing country.

WAW Wednesday ... "Summer is Coming!!"

"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. Tim Tam, Spiritual Director of the Amarillo, Texas-based ministry. "Through our relationships, God reveals needs and opportunities for service. As we come along side the poor, new friendships develop and doors for ministry open. As we serve, God provides the resources to supply for the needs he reveals."

WAW Wednesday: "Summer is Coming!!"

On Tuesday May 2 we had our first Connecting / Fundraiser in Lubbock TX. It was a great opportunity to have our partners in Lubbock and some new faces connect with each other and our Board. We look forward to having more events like this around the US as we seek to connect more with our wonderful U.S. partners.

Here is a picture of a warehouse with supplies headed to Belize on May 15th, we have a Container to load on Monday and it will be filled with some great things for our Belizean partners. If you ever what to be involved with our Shipping Container ministry please contact Derek @ (575) 693-6136. Also this month we will start our first summer team traveling to Belize for a mission trip. Between May 27 - July 29 we will have 8 Teams in Belize. We are excited about what God is doing in the country of Belize and how we will be able to connect relationally to those we go to serve.

WAW Photo

I wanted to give you a recap of what I said during our connection night in Lubbock. I believe that it speaks to the heart of what we are all about here at The Word At Work.

Relationship ...

... is about relationships. Relationships with US Partners with Belizean partners building. Relationships with people to ultimately disciple them into a knowledge and salvation with Jesus.

“Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.” 1 John 4:11-12 ESV

Friends

Our US partners are our friends
Our Belizean partners are our friends
We want them to get to know each other.

How can you become involved:

In three ways ...

Pray - we need your prayers - we have a mandate to change a culture for Christ.

Go - let me show you! The best way to understand the mission of TWAW is to go and put boots on the ground to truly understand what this ministry is involved in. So if that is an interest to you there are four ways to go:

1- vision trip - a few individuals going and looking at as many ministries as possible to then come home and decide how to become involved.
2- bring a mission team, and work in a main area that moves you and connects you to our Belizean Partners.

3- VWP- Vacation with a Purpose - bring your family for a half vacation and half Mission trip. This is an opportunity to expose your family to a mission field and change your family's mindset, as well as have a tremendous vacation.

Give - This is the ask, nothing happened in any ministry without money. And guess what….Missions are expensive, there is a price on helping people. So we do ask that you consider giving into this ministry. Giving into our operations provides salaries to our 6 employees, office needs, retreat lease, time spent in coordination with groups, and everything in between.

There are also some very large projects we are working to start as well as complete:

1- 8 Mile: A school in a community where we have built a vibrant church, there is currently no school in this community and they have to bus kids into Belize City for school.
2- Hospice: a facility for Hospice - we are breaking ground very soon
3- River Property: finance a building remodel by the airport that would house ministries, possibly business for Belizeans, and a training center for leadership development.

“Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the royal son! May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice! Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness! May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor!” Psalm 72:1-4 ESV

Please Contact Derek Osburn @ (575>693-6136 if you would like to get more involved with The Word At Work.

WAW Wednesday ... "Something New"

WAW Wednesday: "Something New"

A Word From Tim

I've been waiting and waiting for the cloud of Covid to lift for two years, and now, in spite of all I see around me, I feel hope rising, like the breaking of dawn! This scripture has captured my attention in a big way.

The night is about over, dawn is about to break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed. Romans 13:12

Previously my hopes and prayers were on getting things back to normal, praying for God to bless my plans and my efforts. (me, mine, mine, I)

What I needed to do, what I will always need to do, is to sit quietly in the Secret Place, first and foremost listen for God's plan, hear from God and obey and come into alignment with what he is doing. Who knows, perhaps my plans and problems Will also be addressed as I "seek first his kingdom…Mat. 6:33

The pandemic is an incubation period. I believe on the other side of it God will give birth to something new in Belize.

Behold, I will do something new. Now it will spring forth. Will you be aware of it?. Isaiah 43:19

What does this mean for The Word at Work?

For over 25 years God has used us to bring growth to his servants and help bring hope to those in need. I expect these efforts to continue and expand.

Even this week, in The Valley of Peace a US team helps to build housing for the elderly who have no families to care for them.

Lakepoint Church completed a 40X60 slab for a home
for the elderly in the Valley of Peace.
A hospice patient receives a hospital bed, medical care

And a young girl is brought to the states for medical attention.

Looking forward I see God building people, raising up leaders, a new movement of leadership development for the kind of leaders that become agents of cultural change. Pray with us and for us as we try to discern our own role in this coming movement of God.

Be devoted to prayer so you will "be up and awake to what God is doing" and be ready to jump in.

We are excited to see our teams in Belize again working along side our brothers and sisters. We have other churches scheduling trips and are looking forward to what God will do through them as they begin to go back to Belize and serve. Please connect with us if you know of a church that would like to go to Belize with us.

Here are some needs that we are looking at currently that you can be in prayer about giving to: Total is around $30,000

01- Gomers House - we would like to complete some projects here that would enable them to begin to use some of the space - $7500

02- Sewing Machines - We have a need and a connection for sewing machines. If we buy a pallet of 48 sewing machines then we get them for 50% off. So $4,800 per pallet and we will be able to ship these quickly.

03- Shipping Containers - If you know anyone who sells or would gift shipping containers please let us know. We have a warehouse full of things to ship to Belize and are looking to ship them. Our Cost for Shipping a container- $8,000 - $10,000 US to ship a container. Please be in prayer as to how you could become involved with shipping this year.

04- Eco Village - We are needing materials to complete some work at Eco - the cost would be $7,500. If you would like to help in one of these areas please contact us A.S.A.P.

We love and appreciate all of you very much.

Things are starting to materialize with Churches getting ready to go to Belize. We have several making plans and purchasing airfare for late spring and early summer.

Tim and I traveled to Belize March 5-12 and met up with several of our ministry partners, we also spent time in prayer asking God what He wants from us as we lead into 2022 and beyond connecting with what He wants done in and through TWAW. We thank you for your prayers as we had many conversations and made many plans for this year and the coming years.

Trip Highlights: Tim and I spent time with many of our partners reconnecting after COVID and found out some great things have been going on there.

We went several places including the Prison, King's Home, the Valley of Peace, Eco Village, Banana Bank, and visited with some of our partners in the Belize City and Belmopan areas. We learned that there is plenty of vision and work to be done through TWAW and our U.S. partners and look forward to going back often with teams. The travel was easy and COVID was not at all a hinderance to our ministry now. We also learned that a few of our partners had some health concerns and were able to reach out and pray with them. It was a great blessing to get back on the ground and make plans for the future of TWAW and all of our ministry partners.

It is such an amazing experience to have all of you as partners, we are so grateful for your participation and look ahead as we continue to do the work that is before us. Please feel free to reach out and connect about anything you may have questions about or would like any further explanation.

NEW BLOOD

Exciting changes for 2022 ... Meet Derek Osburn, our new Executive Director.

Though he may be new to some of you, he's been with TWAW almost since it's inception. It was his church that brought the Story Cloth to Belize. His church opened the door for our very first project in the Valley of Peace. Derek has also served in our Board of Directors so he is no stranger to the ministry. A born leader, he brings a sense of professionalism balanced with a great since of humor that has endeared him to myself and so many others.

Fear not! Ron Allen is still serving with us in a volunteer capacity and I myself continue to function as Spiritual Director. We are moving forward with a firm expectation that everything that's happened in our first 20 years has been a part of God's preparation for what's about to come next!

Old Friends & New Adventures

WOW, what a ride. I wanted to start off by saying that it is such a privilege to become involved with this wonderful organization. I remember my first trip in October of 2004 like it was yesterday. My introduction to TWAW and Belize has had a profound impact on my life and ministry. God used this in my life to give me a passion for missions and a desire to spread the gospel to the nations. Over the years I have been to Belize many times and I look forward to getting back to Belize, and also take opportunities to visit with all the US partners.

Through ministry, I have been able to work within local churches, plant a church, and work in Asia and around the world training leaders. I look forward to leading TWAW into a new season of relationship building and seeing where God would have us go together to continue to put The Word At Work into people’s lives in the country of Belize and watch and see not only the impact to Belizeans but also the impact on those who Partner, Pray, and GO from around the world. Please join and or continue to be involved in this work and we will together see what God has in store for us all through this endeavor.

WAW Wednesday ... "Change"

WAW Wednesday: "Change"

Change is funny. There’s always two sides to change. One side is optimistic and one side is pessimistic. Change however most often turns out to be good. It’s not always easy, it’s not always comfortable. But we get through it.

We don’t always have the choice in change, but we always have the choice of which side of change to be on. I seem to always be frustrated with change. I seem to like things the way they are. But once I accept change, I’m ready to move on.

As TWAW goes through some changes, we ask for your prayers and support. We are optimistic about what God has in store for us. And we hope that you will join us, as things look different for TWAW in Belize. There are many new opportunities on the horizon, and we are excited about that!

Please read the following letter regarding the changes for the Word at Work ...

Covid has created quite a few issues and problems with the schools, with the hospitals, with food, obviously with tourism, and with us getting teams to Belize to help. We will continue to work with, and beside our Belizean friends and we look forward to returning soon.

However, where we can help best now is school supplies, clothing, money for food, and prayers. So if you can help in any of these ways please let us know or simply click on the donate below. And as always, please remember to choose TWAW on Amazon smile for all your purchases.

We thank you for your continued support. As always we know you’re praying for us and we thank you for that. If you have any questions or ideas, we would love to hear from you.

WAW Wednesday ... "2020 IN THE REAR VIEW!!!"

"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. WAW Wednesday: "2020 IN THE REAR VIEW!!!"

Friends of The Word,

Needless to say we are all looking forward to 2021 !!! With new hope and anticipation, we at the Word at Work, are planning and preparing for Great things to happen in our ministry for the people of Belize.

2020 has indeed been a challenge in so many ways ! Not having teams from the US working with the ministry partners in Belize, has been a huge disappointment, due to Covid limitations. But yet we persevered, by feeding hundreds of families through our Feed the Need program. And through generous donations from many people and churches, a container with One Million meals of dehydrated food is due to arrive this week !!

WAW Photo
Kenny and Chepito have been busy organizing fellow Belizean’s to deliver the thousands of Christmas toys to our TWAW partners, which allows them to give gifts to the children in their areas. This is usually a joint activity with folks from the US but not this year. With this opportunity for Belizeans to serve Belizeans, many children will receive gifts !! And hopefully after hurricanes, flooding, and Covid limited classrooms, they can have somewhat of a normal Christmas!

We as the leadership and board of TWAW, were tasked with a difficult choice recently. We have decided to not recommend or support travel to Belize until the Covid situation has been resolved or vaccines have proven themselves and are widely available in both the US and Belize. This is incredibly difficult for us. We accept the responsibility of everyone who travels in our name and understand the frustration this decision brings.

We , however, invite you to join us in supporting Belizeans helping Belizeans. We ask that you continue to give to our Feed the Need program to provide food, medical supplies, clothing, beds and bedding and whatever Need arises in the next few months. Lets do whatever we can do to help our friends in Belize.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

Our Lord is Great, lets watch Him work !!

WAW Wednesday: "Christmas - COMING SOON!!!"

Friends of The Word,

Christmas is coming so soon - I went to Lowe's yesterday and all the decorations are out – in September!

Well, we too are beginning to get ready !! As you may know, TWAW has a Christmas trip each year to share the GIFT of Christmas with our partners in Belize. We are able to donate thousands of toys, school supplies, phone cards to those in the Belize prison to call family, as well as clothing etc. to many outreach programs in Belize. Mary Keith and angels, collect toys all year long to get ready – THANK YOU !! Those ministries in turn can bless their youth with a gift and share the story of the greatest GIFT ever given, our Jesus Christ !!

But this takes much planning and preparation to get shipped to Belize on time. Many of you have graciously helped in the past to send gifts and help offset the cost of shipping a container – THANK YOU also!! Well with all that being said – it will soon be time to load and ship the Christmas Container !! so I am setting the date of Oct. 20 as the date we need your items in Amarillo, TX to get shipped to Belize for Christmas. If you’re in the Amarillo area I’d love to have your help loading the container – please contact ron@twaw.org.

We are planning on sending a team from the US in December to BZE to sort and distribute the gifts –the dates are 12th-19th. Contact jo@twaw.org if you are planning on joining. However with the existing Covid restrictions we will NOT be able to deliver the gifts while in the country. Ministry Partners will be responsible to pick them up this year. We will not be able to provide a Christmas party for the children of Kings Home at this time – pray that changes!

So in a nut shell- Christmas is coming, we are shipping GIFTS soon, we are prepared to either GO and help or to STAY and pray from the US.

So we need your gifts soon. We would love your financial support for shipping and for Phone Cards if you can.

In the Name of the Greatest Gift of All – Jesus Christ !!!

WAW Wednesday: "Can you help us with a MILLION MEALS?"

Friends of The Word,

Thanks to those who gave generously to our Million Meal campaign. If you did not get a chance to read our newsletter last week, please read below and reconsider donating to this important cause.

We are partnering with Breedlove Foods from Lubbock TX. They prepare dehydrated food packages to be shipped all over the world. We can purchase ONE MILLION MEALS from them at 4 cents per meal!! That’s an entire 40 foot container of Food. But we need your help. We have raised $16,000 but still need $30,000 more. We would like for you all to consider giving a portion of what you would have paid to go on your Mission trip to Belize this year to help Feed so many families. Or maybe you are in a unique position to help in a HUGE way – please do! Will you help stem the tide of hunger in Belize? We have thousands of friends on this email newsletter, and if we all participate in some way, we can FEED THE NEED with ONE MILLION MEALS. Thank you for your time to read this today.

God Bless You and Thank You,

WAW Wednesday ... "What's happening in Belize, you ask?"

WAW Wednesday: "What's happening in Belize, you ask?"

Friends of The Word,

As many of you and many of our Belizean partners ask “When will we get to go back?” the unfortunate simple answer is “We don’t know". Not to be bleak, but to be honest – we simply can’t know for some time to come. Belize has had a recent spike in Covid19 cases. They had planned to re-open the borders on August 15th, but have postponed that until October 1st. We understand their concerns and fears. However this has created incredible hardship on those whose livelihood depends on tourism. HUNGER remains to be the number one side effect of this pandemic. School is still on hold – they plan to reopen next week. We have heard stories of desperate acts happening in an effort to feed families.

OUR BELOVED COUNTRY AND FRIENDS NEED OUR HELP!!

The Word at Work, which includes all of you and your generous donations, has been in a blessed position through our Feed the Need program to feed hundreds, if not thousands, of families in the past few months. Chepito and Kenny have been working tirelessly helping in so many ways. Chepe tells a story of an 82 year old gentleman living by himself in his hut on the edge of the jungle near The Valley of peace. Feed the Need has allowed Chepe the freedom to help and feed Mr. Fuentes through these difficult times. He is even preparing Mr. Fuentes a room in the village so others can be able to help him. Proud to call you my friend Chepe!!

Another favorite human of mine, is Mr. Kenny Logan!! He has continued to stay incredibly busy during the pandemic. He has helped our friend Phillipa Miller of First Stone Bible Church to repair and remodel her nieces home. Her niece is dealing with a new life challenge – blindness. She is also raising 2 daughters in a house of disrepair. So Kenny was able to find time to work with Phillipa and members of First Stone to do many upgrades to the home. ( Friends of Phillipa, this is another place to help, as she provided the funds to buy materials for her niece). Contact Ron ron@twaw.org for more details. Kenny has delivered countless boxes of food and supplies to so so many families all over Belize. Many other friends and ministries have been able to feed those in their districts who continue to fall through the cracks of society – Thanks to God!!

SO I ASK THAT YOU CONTINUE GIVE TO OUR FEED THE NEED EFFORTS!! Simply click on the donate button below.

SO WHATS NEXT, YOU ASK?

How about ONE MILLION MEALS?!!

Yes I’m serious, ONE MILLION MEALS for Belize!! We are partnering with Breedlove Foods from Lubbock TX. They prepare dehydrated food packages to be shipped all over the world. We can purchase ONE MILLION MEALS from them at 4 cents per meal!! That’s an entire 40 foot container of Food. But we need your help. We have been given $10,000 to get started but $36,000 more.

Please pray for the people of Belize and for The Word at Work!!!

* Keep Belize in your prayers as a Hurricane is expected to make landfall on Thursday *

WAW Wednesday ... "Will YOU be a ray of HOPE"

WAW Wednesday: "Will YOU be a ray of HOPE"

Friends of The Word,

HOPE! As you read the Vision Statement for the Education Enhancement Program, you will find it is all about you giving HOPE to the people of Belize. This HOPE especially touches the youth.

"Facilitate quality of life improvement at the family, community, district, and national level through educational, material, and spiritual support as determined by the local community and the mandates of scripture."

Because of our donors' generosity, the Word at Work has been able to help many students who live in abject poverty. The route out of this poverty is through education. Each community has a team of leaders who carefully screen the students' academic records, as well as their roles in their community and church. The combined efforts of student, family, church, community, government, and the Word at Work provide educational opportunities for these young people.

Please join this effort by becoming a sponsor. $200 (US) per school year helps a young person attend high school. Educated Christian adults can become the force to affect the nation of Belize for years to come.

WAW Wednesday ... "100's of Belizeans You Helped Feed"

WAW Wednesday: "100's of Belizeans You Helped Feed"

Friends of The Word,

Your generosity has allowed Belizeans to help Belizeans !!!

In the last two weeks the money we have received and are still receiving, has helped FEED hundreds of families in Belize.

Kenny, Chepito and many other volunteers have been diligently working, serving and delivering food packages every day. The NEEDS of so many hungry family’s are being met. The Belizean government is working as well to provide food but is overwhelmed and cannot get to everyone quickly.

With your help, TWAW and our FEED THE NEED program has been blessed to be able to step in and fill the gap for many families. Local farmers have also stepped up and given vegetables in The Valley of Peace and traded for oranges and banana’s in other areas !! It’s wonderful to see a community of believer’s step up and help those in desperate need. Thank you to all who have worked so hard !!!

In addition to food efforts, the ladies with Christian Sewing Partners of Belize have been busy making masks, and even head and foot covers to help stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus for local friends and especially for the hospitals in their areas ! Great job ladies !!!

This is how the people of Belize have answered the question of last week “ so what can we do ?” I’m sure there will be many more stories as the weeks goes by. We will do our best to keep you up to date with the details. Thank You all for your continued prayers and support of our friends in Belize!

Thank you all who have been able to donate to the "FEED THE NEED" program . I am sure the need for food will continue in Belize so please consider a gift if you can.
