IMMIGRATION SUNDAY - “We still have more to offer,” said Stevanie, a young-adult DACA recipient and member of Marturia Presbyterian Church. As the Supreme Court deliberates on how protections under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will continue, we are reminded of the millions of people who are in the United States under temporary immigration statuses.

The temporary statuses provide relief from deportation orders and provide access to work authorization but are precarious. They must be renewed every year to every two years, and individuals must put their lives on hold during each renewal process. Regardless of the amount of time someone has been a recipient of these temporary statuses and vetted for renewal, there are no pathways to permanent residency or citizenship. These protections can also be revoked with the change in presidential administrations. Life is precarious ...

A Collective Lent

By Kathy Lee-Cornell
Director of Partnership for Disaster Recovery

I’ve always loved the honesty of Lent. When else but on Ash Wednesday can you remind everyone, no matter how young or old you are, you are dust and to dust you shall return. Period.

This year, as I was considering what things I might give up and practices I might take on, it dawned on me how individualistically I have often approached Lent. One of my most important tasks in leading the Synod Partnership for Disaster Recovery is helping individuals to connect with something that often feels enormous and too overwhelming for one single person to feel like they have a place in the world of disaster ministry ...

The Plight of the Southern Border

By Hill Kemp
Director of Partnership for Disaster Recovery

As the sun sets over south Texas, Caly Fernandez looks out over the tent city holding 9,000 people and sighs knowing that the desert night temperature will soon dive and those people face another night of misery. This Matamoros tent city is but one of many she advocates for as Director of Puentes de Cristo (Bridges for Christ). She knows the lucky ones have a blanket to cover themselves and their kids to try to keep warm. But the unlucky ones might have only a towel or their threadbare clothes.

Just two decades ago there were dozens of churches and hundreds of volunteers to look after the hapless migrants on both sides of the border ...

Teaching Borderlands

April 24-25, join us for a panel presentation and discussion about Latinx theological education from the perspective of a team of Latinx educators who will offer insights on the context of "teaching borderlands." Using their own embodied experience in the classroom, they will discuss a multivalent pedagogy which seeks to uncover the racialized logic that currently prevails in seminary classrooms. Our goal is to work en conjunto (together) and reimagine Latinx learning by thinking more ethically, courageously, and critically about the U.S. borderlands.

By Martha Pskowski, Reporter

EL PASO, TEXAS - When Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick appeared on a July 5 Fox News segment about fentanyl, his comments quickly turned to the U.S.-Mexico border.

“We are being invaded," he told the host.

“We’re being attacked as we were on Pearl Harbor," he followed up.

That same day, Kinney County Judge Tully Shahan signed a disaster declaration. The South Texas county had previously called for help to “defend our borders” from undocumented immigrants. Now Shahan called on Gov. Greg Abbott, as the state’s Commander-in-Chief, to “declare the existence of an invasion on its border with Mexico.”

Patrick and Shahan’s words were familiar to the people of El Paso.

Nearly three years earlier, a white man north of Dallas wrote a diatribe ...

ODESSA, TEXAS - s gas and grocery prices continue to rise, food pantries in West Texas are feeling the effects to keep up with the surging demand.

Each month, the West Texas Food Bank distributes a million pounds of food.

Craig Stoker, WTFB Marketing Director says it’s a number likely to increase by summer with more facing food insecurity in the community due to inflation.

“We have seen over 400 cars every week that we have had our pantry this month and we don’t expect that to go down anytime soon,” said Stoker.

In the News ... "Unaccompanied minors a challenge"

OA Photo by Eli Hartman
• Rev. Perez took opportunity to encourage hope

By Bob Campbell, Reporter
Odessa American

MIDLAND, TEXAS - The Rev. Freddy Perez joined the priesthood to dedicate his life to serving others, which took on new meaning when he was the only clergyman ministering to 500 unaccompanied minors detained last spring and summer at a former man camp on the south side of town.

Parochial vicar of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish and Shrine at 1401 Garden Lane, the Rev. Perez says it was a profound experience to meet and try to help the children and teenagers who’d been taken into custody for illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

“I learned that preaching hope to children who had been separated from their families was a daunting task,” he said. “I was able to witness to them that we should never cave in to fears but instead live in the joy of Christ. I reminded them that we were all family and that they were never alone.”

Perez grew up in San Angelo working in his family’s restaurant and after graduating from Lakeview High School he earned a degree in philosophy at Mexican-American Catholic College in San Antonio, a master’s in divinity at the Oblate School of Theology there and a master’s in ecclesiastical administration and management at the Cameron School of Business at the University of St. Thomas in Houston.

Perez first became interested in the priesthood at age 13 when he was inspired by his parish priest, the Rev. Joe Vasquez. “Seeing that a priest was a man like Christ solidified my calling,” he said.

His parents Martin and Teresa now own a restaurant in Sweetwater. He has a brother.

“I preach about the Christ who is with us and is the one we give witness through, living out our baptism and learning about the kingdom of Christ in the here and now,” said Perez, 35, who serves with Our Lady of Guadalupe’s pastor and rector, the Rev. David Herrera. “I also preach about social justice and human dignity because we have an inherent dignity that is brought about by being a creation of God.”

Along with his traditional priestly duties, Perez is using social media to market the church and bolster its outreach. “I’m a hard-working millennial with a good understanding of what it is to live in this day and age and of how to better ourselves as a church through technology,” he said.

Perez said the church’s shrine, the only one in the San Angelo Diocese, has been rebranded and turned into a pilgrimage center that “can be a place of peace and refuge on your journey.

“It is also a place for the daily devotees who come and pray,” he said.

Bishop Michael Sis said Perez, who previously served at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Midland, is hard-working and dedicated priest whose ministry has a great positive impact on people ...
