From Equal Exchange ... "NOVEMBER 8: Avocado Growers Share Their Story"

Equal Exchange's mission is to build long-term trade partnerships that are economically just and environmentally sound, to foster mutually beneficial relationships between farmers and consumers and to demonstrate, through our success, the contribution of worker co-operatives and Fair Trade to a more equitable, democratic and sustainable world.

NOVEMBER 8: Avocado Growers Share Their Story

November is Avocado Month and we’re celebrating 10 years working with our avocado farmer partners at Pragor Organic Growers in Michoacán, Mexico. Pragor is a small player in a large, lucrative, and volatile industry. Yet as leaders in the organic avocado movement, the group continues to highlight the essential role and resilience of small farmers in the industry. Joining us from Pragor, Gustavo (President and member) and Roberto (General Manager), will share their reflections on the decade of the Equal Exchange avocado supply chain. We hope you’ll join us!

From Equal Exchange ... "Time to order Chocolate Minis for Halloween"

Order by 10/20 to get Minis in time for Halloween

Opt-out of chocolate produced by an unfair system.

Big Chocolate still depends on child labor. The National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago (NORC 2020) estimated that during the 2018-2019 cocoa harvest in Ghana and Côte d’Ivôire alone, 1.5 million children worked on cocoa farms. The vast majority of these children are working on family farms but due to the imbalance of power and profits in the chocolate industry, many encounter some sort of unsafe or unfair working conditions. In reality, this is a global issue and the reasons and solutions are complex but the problem has long been visible, and Big Chocolate isn't doing enough to stop it.

This Halloween, send a message by purchasing small farmer co-op grown, traceable mini chocolates because it makes a difference what kind of sweets you choose. And because they are delicious!

Walking the “K’ojolaa” Coffee Trail

On the shores of Lake Atitlán, in the southwestern highlands of Sololá, Guatemala, a promising new cooperative initiative is beginning to take root. The “Coffee Tour K’ojolaa,” is an ecotourism project that was envisioned, planned, and organized by ten Tz’utujil Mayan youth in the small town of San Pedro La Laguna. Ranging in ages from 23-28, the project’s creators are members (or the sons and daughters of members) of Adenisa, a local, small-scale coffee cooperative.

The project is part of a much larger effort by Equal Exchange to support the social, environmental, organizational, and productive efforts of their Latin American small farmer coffee and cacao cooperative partners ...

Extraordinary Coordinator: Jane Chandler

When you live on the edge of a pond in rural Maine and learn that a member from your community is in dire need of socially just coffee, what do you do? If you're Jane Chandler, veteran fair trade coordinator at West Parish Congregational Church UCC, Maine, you jump into your kayak, tied at your dock, and paddle across the pond to provide high quality products for your friend in need. Jane and her husband Jim live year round on the edge of Bryant Pond — located about 15 minutes away from Bethel, Maine. Jane delivers most of her Equal Exchange coffee orders by car or folks pick them up from her house or the church; but she keeps the kayak tied to the dock for caffeine emergencies ...

How a Trip to Yellowstone Changed How We Think About Food

40 years ago, our family traveled to Yellowstone National Park to camp for a few days. When we entered the park, the ranger handed us a newspaper with the headline “Human Food Kills Bears.” That headline was about to change our lives and those of our progeny. We realized that if our food was killing 300 lb. bears, it wasn’t doing us much good either. That was the start of something big ...

Cooperatively Grown Avocados: An Interview with PROFOSMI

We all have differing knowledge of the fruit that has quickly become a staple in the North American diet. Through years of successful marketing, consumers have been taught the many health benefits of consuming avocados and that they spread well on toast. Most of us are aware they are native to Mexico, where 88% of the United States’ imported supply comes from. But what does life look like for a small-scale avocado farmer in the Mexican state of Michoacán? And what is the actual difference between a conventional and an Equal Exchange avocado?

These are the questions the Equal Exchange produce team seeks to answer ...

The Ridgeland Church Creates an All-Embracing Neighborhood Cafe

Ridgeland Church, part of the Church of Nazarene, is a community of around 100 neighbors with roots in the southwest collar suburbs of Chicago dating back to 1926. Today, they remain in the same communities and are opening an all-embracing neighborhood cafe in Oak Lawn, Illinois. Ridgeland Cafe’s manager, Macy Richey shares her thoughts on their new community space.

“The Ridgeland Cafe started from our church’s mission to love our neighborhoods. We realized that although we live in a densely populated area, there are very few places for people to meet, work, or relax. So we set out with the desire to create a space with free coffee and tea where our neighbors could gather, work remotely, meet up with friends, or grab a quick pick-me-up either before a day at work or after a long day." ....

Consumer support and advocacy has been absolutely crucial to Equal Exchange since our founding in 1986. Over the decades, consumers have organized with Equal Exchange to gain placement in grocery stores across the US, organized distribution of Equal Exchange products in their communities, and spread the word about our alternative trade model to friends, family, and neighbors to help build our alternative trade economy. Thank you for already supporting us, we want to invite you to engage with us on a deeper level.

We invite you to join us for our next New Member Orientation

Tuesday, May 24th on Zoom
7:00pm Eastern | 6:00pm Central | 4:00pm Pacific

Now is a great time to get involved!

A little bit more about our Citizen-Consumer community
Equal Exchange

Our model relies on the active participation of all three legs of the stool, a metaphor we use to describe Equal Exchange’s democratic multistakeholder model. The three legs of the stool are made up of small farmers, Equal Exchange worker-owners, and Citizen-Consumers like you!

In 2016, we began to formalize our citizen-consumer network. Since that time Citizen-Consumers have gathered for annual summits to learn about the food system and build community. Members meet online for monthly meetings and for other educational events throughout the year. Together, we’ve also engaged in campaign activities including political and consumer-based actions to work toward a better food system.

In 2020, Equal Exchange formally created a space for Citizen-Consumers in our governance model through dedicated seats on the Equal Exchange board, filled and elected by Citizen-Consumers.

Our membership has gone on to create incredible projects inspired by the Equal Exchange mission, organized buying clubs in their community to distribute Equal Exchange products, helped to get placement of Equal Exchange products at their local grocery stores, engaged with local politicians for in-district meetings to encourage them to endorse legislation in support of an independent food system, and formed friendships and community with like-minded folks from across the country.

Our solidarity trade model would not be possible without the active participation of Citizen-Consumers.

We hope to see you there!
