HUNGER & HOMELESSNESS SUNDAY - Roughly 421,400 people were unhoused in the U.S. last year, and 127,750 of them were chronically unhoused, meaning they didn’t have a place to stay for a year or more, according to National Alliance to End Homelessness data. Unhoused rates have been climbing nationally by about 6% every year since 2017, the alliance said. The increase in the number of unhoused people comes when housing costs are soaring and prices for essentials like food and transportation continue to rise.

This is why Congregation-Based Community Organizing (CBCO) groups are so essential ...

In the News ... "More than 25 Midland nonprofits to participate in homeless count"

• Count will improve understanding of the needs and circumstances of the people experiencing homelessness in the community

Staff Report
Odessa American

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Midland’s Homeless Coalition in association with the Texas Homeless Network and volunteers from the community will on Thursday conduct Midland’s largest Point-In-Time Homeless Count in a coordinated statewide effort to measure homelessness across Texas.

Over course of 24 hours trained volunteers will count and survey individuals who are staying in emergency shelters, transitional housing, and unsheltered locations (outdoor encampments, streets, cars, and other places not meant for habitation) in our community. This count will provide a “snapshot” of the number of people experiencing homelessness as well as key characteristics of those individuals and families, a news release said.

The results will indicate the minimum number of people experiencing homelessness in our community on any given night. As a note, other forms of homelessness, such as people staying temporarily with friends, or those that can come up with enough funds for a hotel/motel are not included in the PIT Count (per HUD guidelines). The release said they recognize that this means the PIT Count data will only be representing a fraction of the homeless population in Midland.

The PIT Count will improve understanding of the needs and circumstances of the people experiencing homelessness in the community. The survey will provide key data on gender, age, ethnicity, veteran status and more, the release said. Results from the PIT Count will be publicly available and the results used to improve our response to homelessness. In the future, successive counts will allow us to measure progress toward the goal of ending homelessness in Midland ...

In the News ... "The Field's Edge celebrates grand opening"

MRT Photo by Tim Fischer
• Tiny house project in southwest Midland to be inhabited by some of Midland’s homeless population

By Ben Shaffer, Reporterr
Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND, TEXAS - The Field's Edge, a nonprofit organization, delivered on its motto to “cultivate home” by building a group of tiny houses to be inhabited by some of Midland’s homeless population.

The grand opening of “The Village” was at 6701 Cholla road in southwest Midland on Thursday. It was the culmination of many years of research and construction.

The Field’s Edge Founder and Chief Executive Officer John-Mark Echols first heard about a similar encampment for the homeless in Austin while doing volunteer work around seven or eight years ago.

“We went there to check it out and ended up going to live there for about four months. We trained and came back to replicate it since the middle of 2017,” he said.

There are 10 homes -- nine tiny homes and one home where Echols and his family will move in to -- at the close-quartered neighborhood. Chief Operating Officer Benjamin Harvey says expansion is certainly in the minds of The Field’s Edge leadership.

“Our five-to-10-year plan is to have 10 pods; each pod will have 10 homes. At the end we’ll have 90 tiny homes and 10 missional homes,” he said.

Echols, a devote Christian, explained how his faith has driven him to pioneer this life-changing project.

“I encountered the homeless and knew they were my neighbors and that I needed to serve them; I wanted to serve them. Then, the Lord just kept putting things in front of my wife and I, just small steps of obedience and next thing we knew were selling our house and moving into a travel-trailer with our 18-month-old daughter and going off to build a tiny home community,” he said.

The single-occupant homes will include a bed, sitting area, microwave, coffee pot, sink, air conditioner and heater with a separate area with a kitchen and bathing resources, according to Echols.

“The reason for that is we want to facilitate interaction and community. At the root of homelessness is the fact that someone has been through something traumatic and had no support and so the whole idea around this community is that it’s about rebuilding those relationships,” he said.

The homes all face each other and have front porches to create opportunities for new neighbors to socialize.

Though Echols has created this community, he had a simple explanation for why other areas of the country haven’t.

“It’s really hard,” he said. “The most challenging aspect is land and casting the vision in a community. A big part of the work is education in the community and making people realize it’s not as simple as they think.”

Echols does believe that more areas who have the benefit of vast land will begin to investigate similar projects for those in need.

During his brief speech, Echols thanked the community for the support they’ve shown him and his family over the six-year journey of turning his vision into reality ...

• Opportunities for anyone interested in supporting Midland Habitat’s efforts

Staff Report
Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND, TEXAS - On July 19, Habitat for Humanity, Midland dedicated its 179th house, located at 813 Wolfberry Court, to a deserving homeowner.

The home was funded by Endeavor Energy Resources and individual donors to MHFH’s year-end campaign. Endeavor employees spent two weeks volunteering on the job site, the Habitat ReStore and office.

Midland Habitat is one of the premier institutions responsible for constructing affordable housing in the Permian Basin. The organization’s partnership model offers deserving, hard-working families a hand-up. Midland Habitat uses a rigorous qualifying process that includes progress from the application through homeownership. Each participant contributes a minimum of 350 hours of “sweat equity” on the worksite and completes a homeownership education program. Successful candidates are then awarded a 0% interest mortgage, making homeownership a reality for some of the neediest families in the Permian Basin.

Anyone interested in supporting Midland Habitat’s efforts in the Permian Basin can contact Jeff Meyers, chief of staff, at 432-686-8877.
