Nightlight Blog: "More Divine Encounters"

"The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” Isaiah 9:2

Annie Dieselberg, founder and CEO, heads the staff at NightLight, a ministry in urban Bangkok, Thailand, that reaches out to women and children working in the bar areas of the Nana-Sukhumvit district. Located in a neighborhood with a growing sex trade, Nightlight’s vision is to share the Light of the world in both word and deed to those who live in darkness, and to combat the sexual exploitation of women and children, both Thai and foreign,

One of the means Annie uses to share her observations and experiences is her blog, a document of Nightlight's's mission to see women and children freed from the sexual exploitation of prostitution and trafficking, and to see the global church and community working together to free, heal, and restore all who have been broken and wounded through the sex trade.

More Divine Encounters

I met him when we were throwing a special Christmas party in our outreach center in the Nana red light area – complete with food, carols, games, and crafts. He was intrigued by us – after all, we stand out quite a bit from the crowd in that area of town! I was standing outside the party welcoming people and encouraging them to join in the fun. He chatted with me for almost 30 minutes before deciding to go into the party and meet some of my friends. At the end of the night, we spoke a few more times until we finally cleaned up and locked the doors. I thought that was goodbye. As he departed, I prayed that God would not let him forget the truth he encountered that night in a red light area of Bangkok, Thailand ...

Nightlight Blog: "A Few Good Men, Part 3"

A Few Good Men, Part 3

We at NightLight believe that men are part of the solution in regard to the issue of sexual exploitation. We are committed to reaching out to the men who come to Bangkok to participate in the sex industry. These following stories will highlight “a few good men” that we work with or encounter in the Nana red-light district in Bangkok. This week we are featuring a journal from David Weber. He and his wife, Allison, are from the U.S. and recently joined the volunteer staff at NightLight in August 2012 ...

“Greetings, friends and supports of NightLight. My wife Allison, and I are volunteers with NightLight and are responsible for the outreach center. Males are a rare sight at the NightLight offices, so I’ve often felt like an anomaly here. Jeff, Ajaan Nak, Paul, and I are surrounded by 60+ women. Some men would relish these opportunities, but since my last two seasons of life were male-dominant: working at an engineering firm and then studying in the information systems department of a business school, I admit it is sometimes a bit daunting! Allison says it’s good for me, and she is usually right about this kind of stuff.

Before coming to NightLight, I expected the women there to view me with hostility, since it was likely the men in their lives who mistreated and abused them ...

A Few Good Men, Part 2

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be doing a series of stories titled “A Few Good Men.” We at NightLight believe that men are part of the solution in regard to the issue of sexual exploitation. We are committed to reaching out to the men who come to Bangkok to participate in the sex industry. These following stories will highlight “a few good men” that we work with or encounter in the Nana red-light district in Bangkok. This week we are featuring a journal from Paul Brown. He and his wife, Sarah, are from England and recently joined the volunteer staff at NightLight ...

t was not too long after we arrived in Bangkok that I went on my first outreach night in the red light area of Nana. Nana’s appearance during the day is a far cry from its much darker and seedier face during the night. I joined the ladies for prayer prior to them going on outreach. On this occasion, I was able to accompany them around the area but not into the bars.

My attention was particularly caught by the men I saw. I remember seeing one woman chatting to a man, and as I passed, I overheard their conversation. He proceeded to tell her that he felt he was not an attractive man, even though she was trying to make him feel like he was. Some of the men who were old enough to be many of the ladies’ fathers were trying to impress them with their life achievements. These men came across as lonely and probably hurting individuals more in need of ‘love’ than ‘condemnation’. As I looked on many of these men with compassion not condemnation, it made me think of the scripture – "For God did not send the Son into the world in order to judge (to reject, to condemn, to pass sentence on) the world, but that the world might find salvation and be made safe and sound through Him." John 3:17 (AMP) ...

“I don’t have sex with the women.” I hadn’t actually asked his intentions, but a conversation with a man in the middle of the red light area is likely to end up addressing this very thing. The large, muscular man was curious about who we were, and he had approached as one of our team was doing Thai sign language with the deaf streetwalkers. He made a few signs to the women and then tried to ask questions of our team member. She was deeply involved in hand signs with the deaf, so I engaged him in conversation instead.

“Thank you. Thank you for respecting the women,” I said sincerely. His response took me by surprise. “I respect myself,” he said. “Why would I do that when I respect myself?”

I’m pretty sure that is the first time I have heard these words in the red light area. It made me stop and think ...

NightLight Blog (Annie's Journal): "Divine Connections, Pt. 3"

Annie Dieselberg heads the staff at NightLight, a ministry in urban Bangkok, Thailand, that reaches out to women and children working in the bar areas of the Nana-Sukhumvit district. Located in a neighborhood with a growing sex trade, Nightlight’s vision is to share the Light of the world in both word and deed to those who live in darkness, and to combat the sexual exploitation of women and children, both Thai and foreign.

Divine Connections, Pt. 3
“After two divine encounters, the night was still young and we headed to a show bar. This bar is a hard one to visit because of all the nudity and sex shows taking place through the night," Dieselberg writes in this latest post at NightLight Blog. "Last visit we met a woman who was new and unhappy and we were drawn to return to her. Fortunately, we found the woman we knew fairly quickly and got caught up in a conversation. When we focus on the women in conversation, the background fades and is less daunting."

Located in a neighborhood with a growing sex trade, Nightlight’s vision is to share the Light of the world in both word and deed to those who live in darkness, and to combat the sexual exploitation of women and children, both Thai and foreign.

Divine Connections, Pt. 2
“Waiting for God’s prompting we passed one bar after another. “C” bar came my mind. As we went through the curtain I looked up and saw ladyboys dancing. The bar had just been changed to an all ladyboys bar. I must have been mistaken and heard God wrong," Dieselberg writes in this latest post at NightLight Blog. "As we turned and walked out, I stared with disapproval at the policeman sitting comfortably at the entrance in his usual position."

NightLight Blog (Annie's Journal): "Divine Connections, Pt. 1"

Located in a neighborhood with a growing sex trade, Nightlight’s vision is to share the Light of the world in both word and deed to those who live in darkness, and to combat the sexual exploitation of women and children, both Thai and foreign.

Divine Connections, Pt. 1
“Friday night’s outreach started out on the wrong foot – literally. A team member tripped over a wire strung across the sidewalk and fell flat on her face. She was determined to continue but when she started feeling intense pain one of us took her back to her room," Dieselberg writes in this latest post at NightLight Blog. "Heading to the red light area I began to cross the main street when a huge pink tour bus made a sudden illegal u-turn and came charging toward us barely missing the woman behind me. 'Oh God, get us back in sync with your plans. I’m not sure what is going on here,' I prayed."
