From ServLife International ... "Prayer request for my trip"

Prayer request for my trip

I’m at the Indianapolis airport about to leave on my 29th trip to India and Nepal! It's been almost a year since my last trip, and I'm eager to visit with our partners, pastors, children and families.

I'll get to travel to west Nepal and visit some families in the microfinance program and some pastors in the field. I'll go to the school in India, and visit the kids in the orphanages in Kathmandu. Near the beginning of my trip I'll visit the pastor training school, and will be there for their graduation on November 19 before I head to the airport to go home.

I would really appreciate your prayers during my trip. Here are a few specific prayer requests:

For my family while I’m gone
That ServLife would hit our fundraising goal of $100,000 by the end of October (we are very close!)
For the 14 Pastor Training students concluding their training in November
For the Pastor Training Graduation Ceremony on Nov. 19
That our staff in India and Nepal would be encouraged by my visit
That I would be faithful in daily Bible reading and prayer
That I would be faithful in daily Bible reading and prayer
That I would be sensitive to the Holy Spirit in every situation
     For good health and endurance

I am so grateful for your prayers and support. May God have His way in every way.

Thank you,

Poverty in India and Nepal

Since 1992, ServLife International has been working in India and Nepal educating children and empowering families to help loosen the clutches of systemic and generational poverty. Throughout India and Nepal, poverty exists in both rural and urban environments, but in villages in the most mountainous and rural regions, this poverty is rampant.

There are areas that take many hours by car and foot to reach, and families are leaving these villages where they’ve lived for generations to find more opportunities in the cities. This shift out of villages has been gradual and is in response to the rise of technology worldwide. Young people are finding their way out of poverty, but now these villages are mostly made up of the very young and the elderly ...

SEASON OF PRAYER AND REFLECTION IN THE KOREAN PENINSULA BEGINSE - Today, June 25, marks 72 years since the Korean War broke out. Throughout that June, skirmishes along the division border led to North Korean forces crossing the border en masse on the 25th. Most U.S. Americans believe the war then ended in 1953; however, only an armistice agreement was signed at that time. This means outright fighting in the war has paused, but the state-of-war itself has continued for 72 years ...

Nirula’s Education

“Nirula says over and over again, ‘I need to go to school, I don’t want to be late, my friends are already on the way.’ I can see the excitement in my child about this school and her education.”

Nirula is one of three children in her family. They live in a small village in India where educational opportunities are limited. Nirula’s father is a police officer and her mother is a teacher in her village, between their incomes they only make a meager amount. They live on a small plot of government land but they do not own the land or small home they live in. Nirula’s mother Shalome shared “Right now we are praying, we are earning, and hoping that somehow we can buy a small piece of land to have our own home and land in the days to come” ...

Long Term Hope

“We are thankful for the loan, and all the opportunities it has provided.”

Sita, her husband, and their two sons live in a small village in east Nepal. Despite working hard in their past jobs, they have not been able to make enough to provide for their family. Fortunately, Pastor Samuel came to their village and told them about a loan program. Sita shares, “Before receiving a small business loan from ServLife International, each person in my family only had one set of clothing, and we couldn’t afford a place to live. My husband and I were working day and night to build a church in our village, and my husband also worked for an orphanage as a security guard.” Her husband lost his job and became a full-time volunteer at the church where they also live. They have both worked to help the church grow ...

When Christianity Came To India: Thomas the Missionary

As a disciple of Jesus, Thomas faced his share of challenges and doubts. He was also very loyal and committed, willing to stand by Jesus even when it put his own life at risk (John 11:16).

Following the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus in 33 AD, Thomas traveled to the city of Kerala in western India and began sharing the story of Jesus. He shared his experiences and people came to believe in Jesus. Within 20 years, there were many groups of people who were believers and were known as “the church.”

After spending time sharing about Jesus in Kerala, he then traveled across the peninsula on foot to Chennai and began preaching on the beaches there. As is historically true, followers of Jesus have had enemies, and Thomas was no different. He fled from the beach to the mountains around Chennai, but his enemies found him and killed him on what is today referred to as St. Thomas Mount. Those who he had led to Christ brought his body back to the beach where he used to preach and buried him there. Years later a church was built over his remains.

Christianity was brought to India nearly 250 years before it was established as the state religion in any other country. Today, St. Thomas’ Basilica still stands in Chennai and is one of only three churches in the world that is built over the remains of an apostle of Christ.

India has a long legacy of believing in Jesus and you’re helping bring the gospel to many through supporting child sponsorships and pastor training.

Pastor Bijendra

“We started a church in our village, and since then it has grown to many members. And some have stepped into leadership roles.”

For the last 8 years since Bijendra graduated from the ServLife pastor training school, he and his wife have devoted themselves to establishing a church in their village. After many sacrifices, prayers, and hardships, Bijendra and his wife were successful and opened their church. The church has grown, a new pastor has been trained, and a wise group of leaders is in place. With this growth and seeing how it prospered, the leadership had a vision to plant a church in a village about 50 miles from Bijendra’s home ...
