8 February, 2023,
Burma

Dear friends,

The situation in Burma now is worse than we’ve ever seen it, and there is the heaviest fighting since World War II. The Burma military comes with a speed and a force that I’ve never seen before. At the same time, there is a new unity in Burma, against the dictatorship, that cuts across all social, economic, racial, tribal, ideological, and religious lines. This unity is based on people from all over Burma banding together to stand against the oppressive dictatorship. This gives us all hope ...

Dear friends,

The women began to cry and, as we hugged them, they clung to us, weeping uncontrollably. One of them let out a mournful wail and held on to Suu tightly. We were in a hiding place with about 1000 men, women, and children, in tarp shelters under trees, trying to keep away from the Burma Army. The four women we were speaking to were telling us about their husbands and brothers who had been killed. They continued to cry and it seemed to me they wanted the opportunity to tell their stories ...

Dear friends,

On 13 June 2022, we launched our first Karenni GLC program of this mission, among new Karen, Karenni, Wa, Shan, Pa-Oh, Arakan, Mon, Padaung, and Burmese Rangers. Heavy mortaring in the area from which the villagers had fled eight months before could be heard in the pre-dawn hours and then sporadically up to the time we arrived at the IDP camp. When Dave met with the camp leaders about a program with the children they were resistant, not wanting to have any large group activity that could be seen by a drone and become a target for an attack. He agreed we’d just visit house to house in small groups.

When our team arrived at the site, a beautiful pine covered mountainside, the kids were already waiting and parents were nervous but willing to visit outside ...

Dear friends,

Jue Aung sat off by himself when I came into the room. There were five other men who all gave polite smiles when I greeted them, but not Jue Aung. He tried his best to avoid making eye contact with me and he wouldn’t smile. He looked sad. He allowed sadness to cover his face in the particular way that an eighteen-year-old seems to know how to do better than anyone else. Jue Aung is missing half of his left leg; it was blown off by a landmine on 10 February 2022. He, and the five other Karenni men here who suffered similar injuries, now sit and wait for their stumps to heal well enough to have prosthetics fitted. We visited them where they are waiting and healing ...

Dear friends,

The border between Burma and Thailand has become increasingly stressed over the past year as close to one million people continue fleeing Burma Army violence while civil war intensifies throughout the country. Last month, Free Burma Rangers (FBR) teams spent a week serving 800 of those who have fled, both reactively to and preemptively from attacks, and are now living in make-shift shelters hiding along the Burma-Thailand border. Of these 800 people, most were women, children, and elderly men. While some were supported by local non-government organizations (NGOs), many still lacked basic resources like food, water, and shelter ...

Dear friends,

A mother wails with grief as the charred remains of her toddler is sifted from the ashes of what used to be Rohingya refugee camp 5 after yet another massive fire has ripped through the overcrowded camp, destroying over 700 shelters and forcing 11,000 people to become homeless once again. The Rohingya people fled a genocide in Burma to neighboring Bangladesh, where they have lived like sardines in some of the world’s largest and most densely-packed refugee camps. When a fire starts and gets out of control, the bamboo and tarp shelters incinerate quickly and the fire spreads, often more quickly than people can run.

This isn’t the first huge fire to destroy Rohingya refugee camps ...

Dear friends,

Myanmar’s (Burma’s) decades-long history of oppression with cycles of feigned reforms, followed by renewed and violent crackdowns, provides the context for the 1995 film, Beyond Rangoon. The film follows the journey of a foreign physician who accidentally gets swept up in political events, survives, and escapes along hill tribe routes to emerge as one of the few eyewitnesses to the brutality. From a slightly different angle, Beyond Rangoon, essentially dramatizes Dr. Spring’s (name changed for security reasons) story, which is tragic, ongoing, and, sadly, one shared by thousands ...

Global Day of Prayer for Burma 2022
Global Day of Prayer Guide/Information (pdf)

13 April, 2022

Dear friends,

Thank you for praying for Burma.

In 2021, the Burma military took power in a coup, attacked its own people, and increased attacks on the ethnic people of Burma. The Burma Army is killing protesters in the cities and plains and killing and displacing thousands of ethnic people in the mountains. In spite of this, there is a feeling of solidarity, commitment, and hope amongst both the Burman and the ethnic people of Burma. The Burmese of the cities and plains have banded together to resist the tyranny in ways never seen before.

The ethnic people in the mountains, chased from their homes, refuse to give up and continue loving and helping each other. Our FBR Ranger teams and other groups move amongst the ethnic people providing medical aid, food support, and being with them in love. The Burma military is more powerful than anyone here but we believe God is still more powerful and is giving us ways to help. There is a new humility and mutual respect among the Burmans and ethnic minorities. We were told by many Burmans: “We ask forgiveness that we did not care about or stand with the ethnic people who have been under attack all these years. We know now the suffering they face. We ask for forgiveness and are sorry. We are so thankful that, when we flee to their areas, they help us and risk their lives to save us. We all need to work together for freedom, and all people’s value and rights must be upheld. We are committed to that.”

In Karen State, a leader who has helped many Burmans escape and find shelter told me, “We have to remember God’s grace and mercy. Without God’s mercy we Karen would not exist. And we do not deserve this, as we make many mistakes and sins. It is not just the dictators who do wrong, so do we. But we confess this and thank God for His forgiveness and grace. We may have to flee and suffer much but we will not lose even though the military is stronger. They are stronger than any of us, but not stronger than all of us and not stronger than God.” The ethnic people with us, as well as the Burmans, believe that the dictators cannot win.

We know that behind the deadly attacks of the military and police against the people of Burma is a deep and formidable evil. This is first of all a spiritual battle. We pray against this evil in the powerful name of Jesus.

God bless you,

David Eubank, family, and Christians Concerned for Burma.
