From ECPAT-USA ... "Advocating for Survivors In The Criminal Justice System"

ECPAT USA is part of a global network of organizations and individuals working together for the elimination of child prostitution, child pornography and the trafficking of children for sexual purposes. It seeks to encourage the world community to ensure that children everywhere enjoy their fundamental rights free and secure from all forms of commercial sexual exploitation.

"Advocating for Survivors In The Criminal Justice System”

Dear Friends of ECPAT-USA,

Since our founding, ECPAT-USA has been at the forefront of the fight for legislation that will protect children who are commercially sexually exploited. With a new administration sworn in and a new session of Congress starting in Washington, D.C., we are also excited to welcome our new Director of Public Policy, Nina DeJonghe. Nina will be helping shape our advocacy efforts this year, including our work on sex trafficking and the criminal justice system.

Cases involving child sex trafficking are complex and require a multijurisdictional approach. It is imperative that victims receive sufficient protection from law enforcement and that the judicial system upholds the law by prosecuting sexual predators whose sole purpose is to victimize children by subjecting them to a harmful life for monetary gain.

We must also acknowledge the level of irreversible trauma placed on children subjected to this lifestyle, which sometimes leaves them unable to navigate their lives after being victimized. To achieve this, it is crucial that trauma-informed practices and measures are in place to support victims.

Take Action - Help #FreeZephi

Zephaniah "Zephi" Trevino, 17, is a child sex trafficking victim who is being charged with capital murder in Texas. An adult has confessed to the crime in her case, in which Zephi was also being sexually exploited. In 2019, Phillip Baldenegro and Jesse Martinez are alleged to have ambushed two men at an apartment who were there, they believed, to have sex with Zephi, who was 16 at the time. One of the men was injured and one was killed, and Baldenegro has confessed to being the one who pulled the trigger.

Baldenegro’s attorney claims that Zephi is the one who lured the two victims to the apartment and that he and Zephi were in a consensual romantic relationship. But to hear Zephi and her parents describe the situation, it is clear that Zephi was being exploited and manipulated. Her trafficker is reported to have physically abused Zephi and threatened to harm her and her family if she told them what was happening. Zephi was sold for sex at the age of 16. There is no other way to describe the circumstances than child sex trafficking. Take action now and demand justice for Zephi.

Trafficking in the News

Exploitation affects communities in every state in the U.S. Below, you can learn more about cases related to sex trafficking across the country that made headlines this month.

Houston man gets life for trafficking girls for sex - A 45-year-old Houston man has been sent to prison and ordered to pay nearly $1 million following his convictions on five separate counts of sex trafficking involving adults and minors.

b>FBI finds 33 missing children in an anti-trafficking operation - Thirty-three children were recovered in an anti-trafficking operation in Southern California dubbed "Operation Lost Angels.”

b>United States Attorney Lawrence Keefe Maintains Priority on Seeking Justice And Recovery For Victims Of Child Exploitation – United States Attorney Lawrence Keefe of the Northern District of Florida announced that a total of 39 defendants were indicted in 2020 on federal charges involving the exploitation of children, ranging from production, distribution, and possession of child pornography to sex trafficking of minors.

Your support helps us to continue our meaningful work protecting children from the threat of sexual exploitation and trafficking. Together, let’s keep fighting to create a world where no child is bought, sold, or used for sex.

Delivered Out of Empire

"Thus the God who inhabits the tabernacle is the God who has prevailed over slavery and who intends, for all time to come, to oppose and defeat the powers of bondage.” — from Delivered Out of Empire

In Delivered out of Empire, Walter Brueggemann offers a guide to the first half of Exodus, drawing out “pivotal moments” in the text to help readers untangle it. Throughout, Brueggemann shows how Exodus reveals a God in radical solidarity with the powerless. Questions for discussion are included at the end of each of the ten chapters in this book that is the first in a series about pivotal moments in the Bible.

Perfect for:

• Personal reading and reflection

Journey to the Common Good

“We are not yet at a new place of wellbeing. We are in between, making the risky journey in faith.” — from Journey to the Common Good, Updated Edition

Originally published in 2010, Journey to the Common Good spoke to an era defined in large part by America’s efforts to rebuild from an age of terror as it navigated its way through an economic collapse. Today, the dual crises of the coronavirus and the disease of racial injustice present daunting new challenges for the church as it seeks the good of its neighbors. In a new introduction to this updated edition, Brueggemann links the wilderness tradition of Exodus to these current crises as a framework to help the church navigate this time of risk and vulnerability and to pursue a genuine social alternative.

Perfect for:

• Group study and discussion
• Personal reading and reflection
• Sermon series creation

Teichert Family Update ... “Thanks to the Lord for His Open Doors for the Gospels”

The family of Karl and Jenny Teichert are serving the Lord as missionaries with OC Africa, in South Africa. They moved to Johannesburg in November, 1997 with their four children; Ann, Scott, Stephen and John. Karl serves as the Southern Africa Director of the Southern Africa Regional Team. Their vision is to see a healthy, Bible-based church established in every unreached village and community in South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia and beyond. Their strategy is to partner with key African church leaders to research, train, and mobilize the body of Christ to complete the Great Commission. They are striving to equip local leaders in Southern Africa to reach their nations for Christ and send missionaries into other countries as well.

“Thanks to the Lord for His Open Doors for the Gospel”

Dear friends and family,

As we reflect on the past year, we are grateful to the Lord for the many open doors he has created for ministry (Psalm 118:19-21). Even though our travel and training plans have not all worked out as we had hoped, we are grateful for the new and fruitful ways we have been able to minister to others in this COVID-19 pandemic.

Karl is grateful for the opportunity to facilitate a five-part online COACHING WORKSHOP ESSENTIALS. It was a stretching experience to present the interactive Zoom training with about 55 leaders from 15 countries. Some of the participants were from Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Tunisia, Romania, Kenya, DRC, Swaziland, Colorado, Texas, and South Africa. Karl personally coaches several of these leaders virtually every month.

Karl has also launched the new CHURCH PLANTING COACHING CONNECTION website (www.cpcc.world). The purpose of this website is to connect experienced coaches and mentors with church planters.

Please pray God would raise up many coaches and mentors to come alongside church planting teams to accelerate church planting movements among the remaining least reached peoples of the world!

We are also thankful to the Lord for the growing vision to multiply Disciple Making Movements as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 900,000 meals have been distributed through our Local Ecumenical Action Network. With every food parcel, community pastors have been able to share the love of Christ and start new Discovery Bible Studies.

Karl facilitated a DISCIPLE-MAKING MULTIPLICATION WORKSHOP with over 50 community pastors in September. Each leader set goals to accelerate a discipleship-making process toward the planting of new forms of churches.

Watch this short, inspiring video clip from the workshop ...

Lastly, we are especially thankful to the Lord for each of you! We are sincerely grateful for your fervent prayers and sacrificial support for us. Your faithful partnership in the gospel is greatly appreciated! Please let us know how we can be praying for you as well.

Gratefully yours,

Karl and Jenny

If you would like to give a gift, please visit this OC website link ...

OC Africa is an interdenominational ministry committed to developing, equipping, and mobilizing church leaders to multiply healthy, Bible-based churches in every community in Southern Africa and the world. OC is a faith-based mission who depends on the Lord to provide committed, financial supporters and partners. NEED FOR FELLOWSHIP - Loneliness as a phenomenon is nothing new — nor is loneliness unheard of within the life of a congregation, especially among single adults and those who are housebound or in nursing homes. But with the new norms of social distancing, loneliness has taken on a new level of intensity for many Americans. In the United States some 35.7 million people live alone, or approximately one-third of households. This number has nearly doubled in the past 50 years.

Living alone and loneliness are, of course, not the same thing. However, since COVID-19, those who were already isolated are finding themselves even more so ...
