MIDLAND, TEXAS - Diving right in and playing fastball is what Patrick Payton has been doing since moving to Midland in 1999 to plant a church that became Stonegate Fellowship.

Moving to the Permian Basin to fulfill his first call in ministry, Payton said he hit the ground running.

“It was me and about 200 people wanting to be part of a church,” said Payton, who previously worked as a food broker in Oklahoma. “I worked a lot those first years getting things going and wasn’t always sure exactly what to do, but we made it.”

The same effort Payton put into building Stonegate into the largest church in the Permian Basin — one with an average Sunday attendance of 5,000 — is what he’s willing to devote to Midland ISD’s improvement initiative.
