From @austinseminary ... "The Reed" for August 2020

Jumping ahead in technology!

Since the Seminary's physical closing in March, several planned technology projects got a jumpstart. Within a week—assisted by our learning technologist and nimble worship team—the faculty, students, and staff began online teaching, learning, meeting, and worshiping. The IT department quickly pushed up a planned late-summer roll-out of Office 365 in order to provide more accessible file sharing and inter-office communication. And throughout the summer, key staff worked diligently to transition to a new student information system and teaching platforms that will enable current and future Seminary communities to work effectively in the digital environment.

Online resources for Christian leadership

August 22 | Horizons Bible Study: Into the Light: Finding Hope through Prayers of Lament | P. Lynn Miller | Join us for this annual training for leaders of the Horizons Bible Study led by its author. You may find that recovering lament may be one of the church’s most timely gifts to the world.

September 2 | What am I going to say? Preaching through the Election Season | Leah D. Schade | In this workshop clergy will learn how to approach preaching in this politically divisive climate using two tools: a “dialogical lens” for interpreting scripture and the “Five Paths for Prophetic Preaching.” Together, participants will workshop sermon topics for the five Sundays preceding the national election using these tools.

October 5-7 | Dipping Deeper into the Well of PC(USA) Ministries | Stephanie Fritz | in partnership with SCRAPCE | Discover the wide array of resources available for use in Christian formation and educational ministry. Attendees will experience first-hand the many options for church school studies, mission enhancement, programming for intergenerational or age-and-stage educational and spiritual formation.

October 19-23 | Tending the Soul of a Community: A Workshop on Storytelling for Communities of Faith | Mark Yaconelli and Melissa Wiginton | How do we tend the soul of our faith communities in the midst of a pandemic, unstable political leadership, unmasking of racial discrimination, and unprecedented change? We will explore the sacred power of stories to heal, connect, enrich, and mobilize communities for good. Through experiential exercises, individual skill-building, spiritual practice, and theological reflection we will learn how stories can be a radical and deeply spiritual practice for strengthening relationships, raising up common values, and inspiring compassionate action.

Grant programs for rural Texas pastors and Latinx churches

In 2021 EBW is launching a Pastoral Leadership for Public Life (PLPL) cohort with a focus on pastors in rural Texas. We recognize that many clergy in rural settings lack connection to supportive colleagues within their region and beyond. Woven throughout this cohort program are opportunities to deepen relationships with peers, engage in practical action, and reflect theologically on issues of the common good. PLPL Rural is a 12-month commitment to learning in a community of sixteen pastors with five to fifteen years in practice. This cohort will meet online and in-person throughout 2021. Being a leader in ministry is noble service and it can be rewarding, but it can also be hard. Leaders often lose energy over time and burn out, hurting themselves and their congregation. We want to help leaders stay alive in their ministries, for their own sakes and for the sake of the church. This grant is for the renewal and refreshment of leaders of Latinx churches—to be used in the way each congregations’ leaders believe will serve them best. We hope leaders will prayerfully use their imaginations to discover what it is that they need. Contact Monica Tornoe for more information ...

What's new at AustinSeminary.edu?

With the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, we wanted to share resources with the broader church. Taking the title from a video from Pastoral Care Professor Phil Helsel, we added a page on our website in the Congregational Resources section called "Resources for Desert Times." You'll find professors' videos as well as some of the video messages President Ted Wardlaw has delivered during these uncertain times. It is continually being updated so take something, share something.

You'll find it here!,
