In the News ... "'Women's history: Elders at Abilene's Highland Church of Christ no longer just male"

Momentous.

The start of momentum, preaching minister Shane Hughes said.

On the eve of Women's History Month, history was made Feb. 19 at Highland Church of Christ when new elders were ordained - six of them women.

This is a first for what is regarded as a progressive Church of Christ in Abilene. Highland 10 years ago announced it was adding an instrumental service to Sundays. Today, there's an early traditional a cappella service followed by one that has acoustic guitars, keyboards and an even a cellist.

The instrumental service Feb. 19 began with the ordination, with the new elders called to the platform to stand with those already tasked as church leaders. That group had been all male, according to the church's website ...

In the News ... "Area church news: ACU's 116th Summit starts new format this fall"

• This year's Summit, scheduled for Oct. 13 and 14, will be "Abide With Me"

ABILENE, TEXAS - Abilene Christian University is accepting registration for the fall portion of its 116th year of Summit, part of a new twice-a-year format for the gathering of ministers, church leaders and others in the faith community.

Under the new format, a pair of two-day gatherings will be held each year, one coinciding with homecoming in the fall, and other with Sing Sing in the spring.

The fall portion of this year's Summit, scheduled for Oct. 13 and 14, will be "Abide With Me," and will focus on children’s ministry, Hispanic ministry, preaching, recovery ministry, small church leaders and youth ministry, ACU said in a news release.

Author and practical theologian Dr. Andrew Root will be the featured speaker at the Oct. 13 plenary session, "Churches and the Crisis of Decline."

Attendance is limited to 400 participants, and registration is required. To register, or for information, go to acu.edu/summit.

FBR Report: "The Eubank Family Summer Schedule"

The Free Burma Rangers (FBR) is a multi-ethnic humanitarian service movement. They bring help, hope and love to people in the war zones of Burma (Myanmar) and the Middle East. Groups send teams to be trained, supplied and sent into the areas under attack to provide emergency assistance and human rights documentation. Together with other groups, the teams work to serve people in need.

In the News ... "Beltway Park Church opening its doors to help people escape the heat"

• Continuing through Friday

ABILENE, TEXAS - Beltway Park Church is opening its doors to those who are trying to combat the high temperatures.

Both campuses will be open and will allow those who need to escape the heat to come rest between 11am and 3pm.

The South Campus Fellowship Hall (west side of building) and the North Campus Coffee Shop. Both locations will be open this Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

ANSON, TEXAS - A four-day revival will begin Sunday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, between Hawley and Anson, about four miles south of here on State Highway 277.

Visitors are advised to look for the iconic neon "Jesus Saves" sign.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday, and at 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Paul and Vanessa Cherry will be the evangelists.

ABILENE, TEXAS - In advance of extreme winter weather expected to arrive in the Big Country Wednesday afternoon, the Salvation Army in Abilene is asking residents to help stock its shelter with hygiene items.

In a Tuesday news release, the organization said its supplies of soap, shampoo, toothpaste and other hygiene items are "dangerously low."

The Salvation Army's local emergency shelter, at 1726 Butternut St., provided shelter to 160 people without homes in January, the release said, and many are expected to seek refuge from the cold weather ...

ABILENE, TEXAS - The interactions between Coptic Christians and Muslims over several centuries will be the subject of an upcoming lecture series at McMurry University.

Bishop Anba Suriel, Ph.D., Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Los Angeles, Southern California and Hawaii, will be the speaker for "Lectures on Christian-Muslim Relations in Egypt," presented Feb. 7-8 at Matthews Auditorium in Old Main.

The first lecture, starting at 7 p.m. Feb. 7, will be "Copts and Muslims: From Early Islam to the Ottoman Period."

Two lectures will be presented Feb. 8, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.: "Copts and Muslims in the Early Nationalist Movement (1879-1919)" and "Cooperation or Co-existence? Modern Developments in the 20th and 21st Centuries Between Copts and Muslims."
