DORCHESTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, SOUTH CAROLINA - If you talk with people living along the coastline of North and South Carolina, they will be quick to tell you they’ve had enough rain to last a lifetime. Hurricane Matthew and 2015’s “one-thousand- year rainfall” have caused some significant problems for many, especially in the Charleston area.

But one church and its nearby residents fared better than most, thanks to a decision the congregation made to care for creation ...

The China Aid Association is a non-profit Christian organization - based in Midland, Texas - with a mission to uncover and reveal the truth about religious persecution in China, focusing especially on the unofficial church. Dear Intercessors,

We love because He first loved us.
1 John 4:19, NIV

Happy Valentine's Day!

I pray this week you not FEEL very loved, but I also hope you are able to show someone else how much they are loved. This afternoon, I spent a few hours with my little girls, preparing Valentines for their class parties this week. I remember Valentine's Day when I was young was a day of great social anxiety; I was never sure if there would be any in my construction-paper plastered shoe box, and frankly I was afraid to pass them out to some kids for fear that they would misconstrue my meaning. These days, with young children at least, it seems the dominant classroom custom is that everyone should get a Valentine. And as I watched my oldest carefully print out the names of each of her classmates, choosing the child's favorite color for their name or drawing a special picture to remind her friend of a funny inside joke, I couldn't help but think that children teach us so much if we're just paying attention. They know how to love with abandon, and that's something the whole world could use a little more of.

In addition to that, please join me in praying for the following matters this week:

MYANMAR // Burmese government 'kills more than 1,000 Rohingya Muslims' in crackdown

For the last few weeks, we have been focusing our prayers on the Rohingya. Quite frankly, things keep getting worse. The reports from various human rights monitoring agencies are frighteningly awful. Recently, Pope Francis spoke out on behalf of the Rohingya, calling for their rights to be restored and their freedom to be respected. But it seems the world isn't really listening. "The UN has previously dubbed the Rohingyas, who are also denied access to university education and in 2013 were hit with a two-child policy, as "the most oppressed people on Earth".

"Pope Francis' comments should serve as a wake up call to the international community," Charu Lata Hogg, an associate fellow with the Asia Programme at Chatham House, told The Independent.

"Despite the scathing UN report and the stream of NGO reporting on the plight of the Rohingyas, there doesn't seem to have been much international condemnation. "Strong political leverages need to be exercised to stop this egregious assault on a stateless people."

Please continue to pray for the Rohingya people -- for the children and their families to be saved from destruction. May God have mercy on them.

MINISTRY IN GUATEMALA AND THE UNITED STATES - I’m thinking about those first few families we welcomed into University Presbyterian Church (UPC) in El Paso, Texas: families who happened to be from Guatemala and El Salvador. They were hungry, thirsty, lacking clean clothes, and they had been held in a detention cell. This was the first place in the United States where they were greeted with care and mercy. MINUTE FOR MISSION: HEALTH AWARENESS AND PRAYER FOR HEALING AND WHOLENESS - Several years ago I had an opportunity to visit Westminster by-the-Sea Presbyterian Church in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, for a Sunday worship service. I had always enjoyed my visits to this church, knowing that I would hear outstanding music and an excellent sermon by their senior pastor, the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Sumner. But I also heard another important message that day. Dr. Sumner spoke of the need for parishioners to attend to their physical health as well as their spiritual well-being. And on this particular Sunday, there would be an opportunity to do this by taking advantage of a free screening for skin cancer that a local dermatologist would be providing immediately after the worship service ...

As other churches around it relocated to newer suburban communities in the ’60s and ’70s, North Avenue decided to stay in the area, even though much of the neighborhood had become blighted. The problems associated with poverty, drug use and prostitution had by then spilled onto the streets and into the doors of the church ...

Dear Intercessors,

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.
Matthew 25:35, ESV

Headlines have been dominated this week with news of President Trump's Executive Order on immigration and the chaos that followed in its implementation. Sometimes it can be hard to cut through all of the rhetoric, but this article by Preemptive Love Coalition helpfully outlines 5 things everyone needs to know about this order. Among them is this important perspective:

"Sometimes we get locked into strident, polarizing positions, as if our only choice is between opening our border completely in the name of love, or locking everyone out in the name of security. Let us be clear: this is a false choice.

You can care about refugees and care about securing our borders. This is not a "liberal vs. conservative" issue. It's not a "Republican vs. Democrat" issue. It's not all black-and-white. There are shades of gray.

There are entirely legitimate reasons to insist on a careful, thorough screening process for those coming into the United States. Insisting on adequate security does not make you a "cold-hearted conservative." Nor does insisting on compassion for refugees make someone a "bleeding-heart liberal."

More importantly, we need to see beyond the dualistic, mutually exclusive categories of "us vs. them." Our security versus their well-being.

What if, in reality, our well-being is tied up in theirs? What if our security is connected to theirs?"

Please join me in praying this week for our leaders and citizens to begin to moving through the divisiveness so we can find some common ground which makes space for both security and compassion.

In addition to that, please join me in praying for the following matters this week:

BANGLADESH// Plan to move Rohingya to remote island prompts fears of human catastrophe
"The Bangladeshi government's revised proposals to relocate tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees to a remote island that appeared only eight years ago, and floods at high tide, threaten to trigger a humanitarian catastrophe, rights groups have warned. Members of the Rohingya Muslim community, who fled from Myanmar to neighbouring Bangladesh to escape persecution, said they were so fearful of the planned relocation they would consider returning to their homeland. Government officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, have described the low-lying island of Thengar Char, in south-eastern Bangladesh, as uninhabitable."
Please pray for the Bangladeshi government to find another solution that involves a habitable place to live for the Rohingya. Pray for the children growing up in such uncertainty; for their safety, emotional well-being and basic needs to be met..

IRAQ // Iraq faces challenge of educating Mosul's displaced children
"Like millions of children in the country, Yousef's hopes of an education ended when Islamic State swept through northern Iraq in 2014. Many parents opted against enrolling their sons in Islamic State-run schools for fear they would be recruited to join the militant group, leaving the children to find jobs to help support their family. A report by the U.N. children's agency UNICEF last year said that almost 3.5 million Iraqi children of school age were missing out on an education, with more than half a million estimated to be at work rather than in class. The need for income was heightened after the World Food Programme said on Friday it had halved the food rations distributed to 1.4 million displaced Iraqis because of delays in payments of funds from donor states. Ahmed Ali, a former factory worker in Mosul, said his children had to go to work as he could not find a job. "It is a very painful situation. Of course I feel sorry for them. What did he do to deserve this? My son is eight years old now and he doesn't know how to write down his own name," Ali said."
Please pray for the Iraqi government and outside aide organizations as they try to rebuild Mosul's education system. Pray for the families of these children to have enough to eat so that their children can go to school.

Jan Edmiston, re-affirmed the church’s more than 20-year relationship with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW). The CIW and consumer allies, including the PC(USA), are boycotting Wendy’s, which has refused to join the Fair Food Program (FFP). The FFP has dramatically improved wages and is ensuring humane conditions for farmworkers harvesting tomatoes, peppers, and strawberries for the nation’s largest fast-food, foodservice, and supermarket chains in seven states. Last year the CIW was awarded a Presidential Medal for the rapid and comprehensive gains the program has achieved in ending and preventing forced labor and other endemic abuses ...

MINUTE FOR MISSION: SOUPER BOWL OF CARING - Brad Smith, then a seminary intern serving at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina, gave birth to the Souper Bowl of Caring with this prayer: “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat.”

This youth-led movement to help hungry people shifts the attention given to the Super Bowl to collect dollars and canned food for those who struggle to put enough nutrition on their tables. Youth collect donations at their schools and churches in soup pots, and then send every dollar directly to a local anti-hunger group of their choice ...

NEWTON PRESBYTERY, NEW JERSEY - The letters with an individual check of $50 from Stewartsville Presbyterian Church, made out to every teaching elder in Newton Presbytery, came in the mail in May 2016, near the end of the church calendar year.

Yet six months later, the pastors who received the letters, and those who made the decision to give them, are still talking about them in ways that get at the heart of the gift of giving ...

Invitation to Prayer from Faces of Children ... TODAY

Faces of Children is an ecumenical prayer ministry under the auspices of First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas. Their mission is to initiate ministries of prayer for children in churches, communities, and neighborhoods. In doing so, they seek to provide an opportunity for people of God to join together, learn about children and their needs throughout the world, and celebrate Christ's love (especially as it relates to children).

Invitation to Prayer, TODAY

Hi Friends,

Thank you for joining me in prayer for the children of the world. If you can, we'd love to have you pray together with us this Wednesday - TODAY -  at 11:30 a.m., in the gym conference room at First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas, followed by lunch together.

Also, Faces of Children is now on Facebook ! I invite you to like our page so that you can see regular stories, prayer needs, and updates from partner ministries.

All the best,

Carrie

Dear Intercessors,

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.
Matthew 25:35, ESV

This week as our president signs executive orders on various immigration and refugee-related matters, please join me in praying for the heart and soul of our nation to reflect the values engraved on the Statue of Liberty and enshrined in the teachings of the religion our nation's leaders so often reference. It seems nearly impossible to write this sort of email and not be seen by someone as getting too political, so I will keep my words few. This I know: Our leaders need great wisdom, courage, bravery and insightful vision in order to navigate the line between closing our borders in an effort to protect our nation and being a place of refuge for the world's most vulnerable children and their families. Please join me in praying for them.

In addition to that, please join me in praying for the following matters this week:

INDIA // Compassion International Faces Eviction from India
"Compassion employs 6,000 workers in India who provide aid to children living in extreme poverty. It has worked in India since 1968 and is the largest humanitarian presence in the second most populated country in the world-providing $50 million in annual relief funds. But India is cracking down on foreign NGOs based on fears that groups are using humanitarian work to mask evangelization efforts. Those fears have prompted the government to block the inflow of relief dollars. Without a change in policy, Compassion has less than 3 weeks of funds left to continue operations within India."
Please pray the Indian government reconsiders Compassion's application so that it can continue serving the 145,000 Indian children they currently have enrolled in their programs. If they are forced to shutter their Indian operations, please pray for the estimated 80 percent of the children they serve who they think might fall through the cracks and not receive proper nutrition or other basic needs.

STORY OF HOPE

NIGERIA // Education Offers Hope of Healing Rifts Sown by Nigeria's Boko Haram
"When Boko Haram militants stormed his home in northeast Nigeria three years ago, 13-year-old Grema Mohammed was forced to watch as they killed his father. Now, sitting in a classroom where the pupils are practising their greetings in English, Mohammed quietly works alongside children of the jihadist group which shot dead his father. "I am friends with everybody, it doesn't matter who their father is," he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation as his classmates chanted: 'I'm fine, thanks, and you?' in unison. "I feel sorry for my classmates, because what happened to me (losing his father) has happened to many of them," he said at Future Prowess, a unique primary school in Borno state which welcomes orphans and struggling children, even those born to Boko Haram fighters. Boko Haram, whose name means 'Western education is sinful' in the local Hausa language, seven years ago launched a bloody campaign to carve out an Islamic caliphate in northeast Nigeria.

The insurgency has killed more than 15,000 people and forced some two million to flee their homes. It has also deprived millions of children of an education and torn apart communities.

Ensuring children are in school, and encouraging communities to overcome the suspicion and stigma often directed at the offspring of the jihadists, is key to healing the rifts sown by Boko Haram, said Future Prowess' headteacher Suleiman Aliyu. "When some mothers complained and asked why we were enrolling Boko Haram children, I said: 'Should we exclude them, and allow them to follow in the footsteps their fathers? No'." "We tell the children: 'Whatever tragedy has happened to you, it is not the end of your life'," Aliyu said."
Praise God for this unification and reconciliation effort! Blessed are the peacemakers -- and educating children in such circumstances is certainly an exercise in generational peacemaking. Please pray for families who depend on their children to be wage-earners or laborers to overcome the financial obstacles necessary to continue educating their children. Also pray for the protection of the schools, which are known targets of the Boko Haram insurgency.

DISPLACED NOT MISPLACED

LEBANON // Syrian Refugee Children Reduced to Selling on Beiruit's Streets to Feed Their Families
After a little-known insurgent group attacked 3 border posts in Rakhine State, Myanmar back in October, killing 9 police "With more than 90% of refugees in Lebanon short of food and facing cuts to aid, desperate families often rely on their children to boost income." "Save the Children is working with families and young people, helping themto protect themselves against exploitation in the labour market. 'We understand that in poor communities, child labour is expected,' says a Save the Children spokesperson. 'But we try to work with the parents, teaching them the importance of education, even if a child has to work. We don't want to see a lost generation.'"
Please pray for these families to have enough food to eat. Pray the children are protected from traffickers and criminals as they work. Pray for the aid organizations to receive the funding they need to help families maintain adequate nutrition. And for NGO's trying to work with families, please pray they can successfully help parents walk the line between educating their children and feeding the family.
