MINUTE FOR MISSION: RESURRECTION OF THE LORD / EASTER ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING - Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him" (Acts 10:34-35).

Picture the scene: it is hot; we are sitting in the shade of a thatched roof; we hear goats bleating, roosters crowing, and people gathering to sit on the ground and meet the group from PC(USA). We were in Yaweima, a remote village in Sierra Leone, to see the ongoing results of a One Great Hour of Sharing-funded program in which villagers work together to produce, store, process, and share food and seeds so that they are more food secure and less impacted by outside forces.

GOOD FRIDAY MINUTE FOR MISSION - The lectionary reading from Isaiah for this day is part of a larger passage that points to the incongruities of this day. Isaiah 52 begins with an exhortation to "awake, awake," for the Lord announces redemption. A messenger brings good news, announces salvation, and proclaims that God reigns. This comfort, this redemption is a sign of a God whose strong arm is bared before the nations.

But this good news of triumph comes from an unlikely source, one who had no majesty. He was despised and rejected, a man of suffering. People hid their eyes from him.

State of Religion, Pt 1: Area pastors say church attendance in Midland still going strong

By Sarah Higgins, Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND, TEXAS -Pastors of local churches are reporting slow and steady growth over the past few years, as overall religious affiliation among adults has declined in the United States.

The percentage of American adults who self-identify as Christians declined from 86 percent in 1990 to 76 percent in 2008, according to American Religious Identify Survey data published by the U.S. Census Bureau. One out of five Americans failed to indicate affiliation with any religion in the 2008 survey. Those who did not claim any religion, or were atheist or agnostic, grew -- though at a slower pace than during the 1990s -- from 8.2 percent of the American adult population in 1990 to 14.1 percent in 2001, and 15 percent in 2008.

"Midland's a sort of bubble in lots of ways, but we're not immune to that, either," said the Rev. Steve Schorr of First Presbyterian Church.

MINUTE FOR MISSION: MAUNDY THURSDAY - I make my way to Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas, through the neighborhood of well-manicured lawns and beautiful houses. Something is out of context. I hear African drums, and the lively melody is invigorating. As I enter the worship space, young African boys give me a bulletin and welcome me. The African hymns are sung with feeling, and I am drawn into the holy presence of God.

This was my introduction to the All Nations worshiping community, where the Rev. Dr. Cyprian Kimathi Guchienda is pastor.

Faces of Children: Prayer Requests

Faces of Children is an ecumenical prayer ministry under the auspices of First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas. Our mission is to initiate ministries of prayer for children in churches, communities, and neighborhoods. In doing so, we seek to provide an opportunity for people of God to join together, learn about children and their needs throughout the world, and celebrate Christ's love (especially as it relates to children).

Prayer Concerns for the week of 4/20/11

BURMA/MYANMAR ( Partners Relief and Development ) - Give thanks to God for the work of the staff and volunteers with Partners Relief and Development as they help the ethnic hill tribe children and people of Burma. Partners' local staff was able to distribute drinking water, food, and tarps the day after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Shan State in Burma. Pray that God will continue to provide for all those affected by this quake. A report from Partners Relief & Development

Please pray for children and people in the Karen State in eastern Burma who suffer from severe food shortages due to failed crops. Pray for those who are not allowed to cultivate better land because they are surrounded by the Burma Army. Thanks be to God for Partners' work with these persecuted people.

ECUADOR - Give God praise for the work of volunteers with Medical Mission Ecuador program in treating 600 children and performing more than 150 surgeries. Many of the ailments treated are genetic defects or preventable birth defects. Thanks be to God that so many children were able to receive treatment for cleft palate, clubfoot, and cerebral palsy due to birth injury. A report from infoforum.com

IVORY COAST, LIBERIA - Please keep the children and people of Ivory Coast held close in prayer during this season of political unrest and violence. Pray for those who live in fear as this country slides closer and closer to civil war.

Pray for the nearly one million people displaced by the fighting between followers of the incumbent president and those of the winner of the recent presidential election. Pray for the estimated 110,000 people who have escaped the violence and sought refuge in Liberia. A report from alertnet.org A report from the New York Times

Pray that God will provide the resources needed to care for these displaced people and for those who have seen their livelihoods disappear because of the fighting. Ivory Coast is the world's largest producer of cocoa and exports have stopped due to European Union sanctions. A report from alertnet.org

KAZAKHSTAN, UNITED STATES - Give praise to God for answering prayers about 2-year-old "Tia" (name changed for confidentiality and/or protection), a little girl born with facial deformities. The judge in Kazakhstan made an immediate decision in the case and allowed Cindy, a single mother of four internationally adopted children, to adopt Tia. Because of Tia's severe facial deformities, the judge in this case made an exception to the current no adoption rule in Kazakhstan.

Please continue to keep Tia and her new mother in prayer as Cindy won't be able to take Tia to the United States for several more weeks. Pray for traveling mercies for Cindy and Tia in the coming weeks. Pray for Cindy's four children in the U.S. who are ready for their mother and new sister to come home. Pray for their grandmother who has been caring for these children in Cindy's absence.

UNITED STATES - Give thanks to God for answering prayers about 3-month-old Lexi, a premature baby born with a multitude of physical challenges due to maternal drug use. Thanks be to God that Lexi doesn't have to have surgery to implant a permanent feeding tube in her stomach and can now feed on her own! Praise be to God that she has gained weight and was allowed to go home with her aunt and uncle who have custody of her now. Please pray that God will continue to wrap arms of healing tenderness around this beautiful baby girl. Pray that God will provide her aunt, uncle, and grandparents with the stamina to care for Lexi and the resources with which to do so.

Pray that God will bring comfort and peace into 13-year-old Colton's life as he goes to live with his grandparents.

Give thanks to God for the safe delivery of "Jennifer's" (name changed for confidentiality and/or protection) baby boy, Brandon, early last week. Please keep this young mother and her children held close in prayer as they start another chapter in their lives.

Pray for Mai, her children, and her husband during this very difficult time in their lives. Mai fell down recently and suffered severe brain damage. She has been in a coma since the fall. Please pray that God will bring healing and peace to this young mother and wife. Pray that God will comfort Mai's 3-year-old daughter and 18-month-old son who must miss their mother very much. Pray that Mai's husband will feel the love and support flowing from his family, friends, church family, and community.

FACES OF CHILDREN - Please continue to pray that more churches and individuals will join with the ministry of Faces of Children in spreading awareness about children in crisis and inviting more people to pray for children at risk.

If you have prayer requests about children, those who care for them, those who have authority over them, or those who harm them (the really hard prayers to say sometimes), please send them to Chris Laufer, FOC Coordinator, at claufer@facesofchildren.net

In addition to offering summer camp opportunities for over fifty years, modernized facilities allow it to operate as a fully accredited camp and conference center. Calvin Crest serves nearly 10,000 campers and visitors each year.

China Aid president asks Americans to stand with persecuted church

By Sarah Higgins, Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND, TEXAS -Wang Zhanhu envisions a time when the Christian church has grown so rapidly in China that it's able to reach out and bring God's word to other countries.

"Pray that they will lead a mission serving (other) nations, that they can bless the world," he told Bob Fu, president of China Aid Association, recently.

China Aid is holding its annual fundraiser on Thursday to help support its ministry that provides aid to families being persecuted and works to expose news about people suffering in China, among other activities. Above that, though, Fu said, he hopes the event can raise awareness and prayer support for those who don't enjoy the same religious freedoms afforded in Midland.

PRESBYTERY OF MINNESOTA VALLEYS - The congregation and staff of First Presbyterian Church of St. Cloud never imagined that within three years both their neighborhood and their ministry would change so dramatically. Over two years ago, the congregation engaged in a discernment process that produced a consensus for ministry focused on five areas: youth and young adult, missional church emphasis, vibrant worship, empowered laity, and improving the church facility to minister to the downtown community. For the past two years, they have been implementing those priorities.

Invitation to Prayer

Faces of Children is an ecumenical prayer ministry under the auspices of First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas. In doing so, we seek to provide an opportunity for people of God to join together, learn about children and their needs throughout the world, and celebrate Christ's love (especially as it relates to children).

Pray for Dependency on God

"Prayer requires that we stand in God's presence with open hands, naked and vulnerable, proclaiming to ourselves and to others that without God we can do nothing. This is difficult in a climate where the predominant counsel is, 'Do your best and God will do the rest.' When life is divided into 'our best' and 'God's rest,' we have turned prayer into a last resort to be used only when all our own resources are depleted. Then even God has become the victim of our impatience. Discipleship does not mean to use God when we can no longer function ourselves. On the contrary, it means to recognize that we can do nothing at all, but that God can do everything through us."

"Compassion: A Reflection on the Christian Life" by Henri J.M. Nouwen, Donald P. MacNeill, and Douglas A. Morrison

"Three-personed God, it truly frightens me to recognize that I am totally dependent on you. I know that my life is not my own, though I arrogantly act as if I am in control. On the contrary, it is you who determines my destiny. Ease my worries over my dependency on you, soften my impatience with your plans for me, and help me to acknowledge that you can do all things through me. Amen."

"Lent and Easter Wisdom" from Henri J.M. Nouwen" compiled by Judy Bauer
