Love Never Fails: "Trafficked Once, Trafficked Again, and Again"

"The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” Isaiah 9:2

Annie Dieselberg, founder and CEO, heads the staff at NightLight, a ministry in urban Bangkok, Thailand, that reaches out to women and children working in the bar areas of the Nana-Sukhumvit district. Located in a neighborhood with a growing sex trade, Nightlight’s vision is to share the Light of the world in both word and deed to those who live in darkness, and to combat the sexual exploitation of women and children, both Thai and foreign.

One of the means Annie uses to share her observations and experiences is her "Love Never Fails" blog, a document of Annie's mission to see women and children freed from the sexual exploitation of prostitution and trafficking, and to see the global church and community working together to free, heal, and restore all who have been broken and wounded through the sex trade.

Trafficked Once, Trafficked Again, and Again

“Leena,” an Uzbek, was first trafficked when she was 16. A neighbor sold her, and a few others, for $100 each to an agent. They were then smuggled across the border of Uzbekistan into Kyrgyzstan. After waiting for a few months in Kyrgyzstan, they were sent to Dubai. The opportunity to work in Dubai sounded like a good deal to the 16-year-old who wanted to run away from home. When Leena was still very young, a relative had abused her. Her parents were divorced, and Leena did not have a good relationship with her mother. She knew the job in Dubai would be prostitution, but she didn’t really understand what that would entail. Leena said when she got to Dubai, she resisted taking clients, but she was threatened and beaten until she learned to cooperate. Her nose was broken during one of these beatings. One of the other young girls in the group was taken to the desert and beheaded. Leena and the others were threatened that if they tried to escape, the same thing would happen to them. Somehow or other, the trafficking ring was discovered by the authorities and a raid took place. The girls were arrested, placed in handcuffs, and sent back to their country as criminals. There was no intervention, no rehabilitation, and no justice. They returned home broken, desperate, and afraid for their future.

In the News ... "Salvation Army food, gifts brighten holiday"

• Salvation Army food, gifts brighten holiday

By Nathaniel Miller
Reporter
Odessa American

ODESSA, TEXAS - Standing outside the Salvation Army Friday morning, Aurora Gomez waited patiently for her turn to collect the gifts from the organization.

A bus driver with the Ector County Independent School District, Gomez said she is also trying to raise her three grandchildren — ages 12, 10 and 9 — whom she has been looking after for the past three years. Their parents, she said, were no longer in their lives.

Along with paying for rent, clothing and groceries, Gomez said she first heard of the Empty Stocking Fund and Angel Tree programs when she approached the Salvation Army earlier in the year to get assistance for her bills.

“I’m very glad there’s someone out here helping us,” Gomez said. “Not all of us work for the oilfields.”

Denison: Advent Devotional for Monday, December 23

Dr. Jim Denison's 2013 collection of Advent devotionals is entitled, "Looking Forward to Christmas", which he describes as "a time to celebrate the Nativity, and Christians around the world look forward to the season ... The details surrounding Christ's birth are a treasured story to each of us but, to the first century population, Jesus was an unexpected gift that most didn't know how to receive. It is still difficult for some people to receive what Jesus was born to give. Maybe that is why we have a Christmas season – to help others receive the most valuable gift, a relationship with the baby in the manger ... The Denison Forum offers this Advent book to help you spend a quiet moment each day, looking forward to Christmas and remembering why the baby in the manger was God's promised Messiah.

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him
John 1:10-11

Thousands of people will line up today, hoping for a photo of their children on Santa's lap. I love watching the different reactions on the faces of the boys and girls when they catch their first close up glance of the old man in the red suit. The reaction on their parents' faces is a lot of fun as well. Parents work hard to convince their children that Santa is "coming to town!" But Santa won't be coming – Jesus will.

It inspires thousands of Presbyterians daily as they uphold the mission of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in intercessory prayer. The book is filled with stories of God’s abundance in the face of overwhelming needs and a scarcity of resources.

PEACE RIVER PRESBYTERY, FLORIDA - Feeding the hungry has taken two different forms in Peace River Presbytery recently. Beth-El Farmworker Ministry, supported by Peace River, the Presbytery of Tampa Bay, and Grace Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, has evolved from a single campus in 1976 to assisting farmworkers in four Florida agricultural communities. During the past three years, Beth-El has started new extension ministries at First Presbyterian Church, Arcadia, and First Presbyterian Church, Fort Meade. Each week Beth-El offers food and clothing to the “least of these.” While welcoming the stranger, it provided 10,000 grocery bags of food last year at just one of its new locations. In the other, an underserved community has benefited from a partnership with a local Presbyterian congregation to distribute food and clothing weekly on church grounds. Just as Jesus provided using only a few loaves and fishes, Beth-El is striving to meet the ongoing needs of the agricultural workers in south and central Florida.

He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world
John 1:8-9

Christmas celebrates the moment when the God of the Universe stepped into our world so that everyone could know him. John told his world that the Messiah was coming soon and they needed to be ready to meet him. There will only be one Advent. There will only be one time God comes to the world in humility as a baby.

MINUTE FOR MISSION: CHRISTMAS JOY OFFERING - In Isaiah 7:14, we find the familiar words, “Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.” In Matthew 1:23, we learn that this name means “God is with us.”

The recipients of the Christmas Joy Offering know that God is with them: those who served the church so faithfully in the past receive needed assistance, and new racial ethnic leaders are, with God’s help, formed to serve Christ in the world. Received throughout Advent and Christmas, this churchwide special offering is designed to prepare and care for church leaders in every generation. It provides assistance to active and retired church workers and their families through the Board of Pensions, and it also supports education at Presbyterian-related racial ethnic schools and colleges.

BIG SPRING, TEXAS - Nearly every day couches and chairs are dumped on their property. The Salvation Army says the money they are spending to haul trash off is taking away from their services.

They have spent two thousand dollars ridding their property of dirty mattresses and unwanted furniture since October.

"Well typically that money would be used for programs like The Boys And Girls Club and the emergency shelter we have," said Jeremiah Romack, a Lieutenant for the Salvation Army.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it
John 1:5

Be encouraged - no matter what you hear about in the news and no matter how many times you are told to be tolerant of other people's beliefs about Christmas. Choose to be loving, kind and respectful – without accepting what isn't truth. People want to believe in eternal life but it is difficult to have faith in something they do not trust or understand.
