PITTSBURGH PRESBYTERY: YOUNG ADULTS - Coming of age in New Zealand, Paul Humphreys deeply understood that country’s special, spiritual connection with the land. “As a child, I was often messing around in rivers, hiking, biking, and sailing,” says Humphreys, who has served as program director for Outreach and Disciple-Making at the Crestfield Camp & Conference Center in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, for the last two years. Crestfield, the camp and conference center for Pittsburgh Presbytery, is a thriving facility that currently serves over 600 campers in the summertime as well close to 3,000 conference and retreat users ...

Learning about Christ-centered care and support to children and families in need

Development Officer Keri Lemon-Goins of Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services for Texas and Louisiana, was a guest today at Grace Presbyterian Church of Midland.

Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services (PCHAS) provides Christ-centered care and support for struggling children and families.

Over the past 114 years, they’ve created programs that greatly improve children’s lives – enabling their recovery from abuse, abandonment, and other forms of neglect.

PCHAS also reaches out and works closely with their parents, some of whom struggle with drug and/or alcohol addiction, unemployment, poverty, depression, and other obstacles to healthy parenting.

MINUTE FOR MISSION: UNIVERSAL DAY OF PRAYER FOR STUDENTS - Around the world, the stories of students are as diverse as the cultures and lands from which they come. Individuals furthering their education may do so out of a sense of hope for the future, that they might improve their lives and be exposed to ideas that challenge and change them. This period of transformation and growth comes at a time when many students are physically separated from their support networks and communities of faith ...

EARTH CARE CONGREGATIONS - If you’ve ever been to Montreat, North Carolina, it’s easy to get caught up in the beauty of the mountains, trees, and streams. The small community has drawn many visitors for spiritual re-awakening, prayer, and a place to call home.

It was an easy choice for Bill Seaman, a retired environmental scientist, who moved to Montreat in 2007. He and his wife quickly connected with the Montreat Presbyterian Church. Before long, the couple became involved in the church’s environmental initiatives ...

Well done, good and faithful servants!

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following text is from a letter by Pastor Cheryl Homsher, Grace Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas, to the church family at Grace. The Fellowship Christian Church of Midland (founded by refugees from Myanmar/Burma) had been a part of Grace, using its facilities for worship, fellowship and more ... until this past weekend. It was cause for a gala celebration. The photographs in this post were taken by Homsher and Judy Brown.

This past Sunday, we gathered to seek and to worship God with the Burmese Chin congregation at their new building.

What a truly spirit-filled day!

I believe the 35+mph winds were just a way of reminding us of the tremendous power of the Holy Breath of God in our world and in our lives – and especially today for the Chin.

We started outside with prayer, singing, balloons and ribbon-cutting, and then gathered inside for worship.

The sanctuary was filled to capacity (and beyond), and the service was live-streamed into the fellowship hall, which was also full.

Members of the other 5 Chin churches of Midland were present; we had a strong representation from Grace; and delegations from Chin churches in Ft. Worth, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona and Oklahoma were present. Leaders of the North American Chin Baptist Association were present from Battle Creek, Michigan; Atlanta, Georgia; Indianapolis, Indianaand Des Moines, Iowa.

There was lots a great music, including two songs from The Backsliders. (Thank you, Backsliders!)

Pastor Thang’s mentor, The Rev. Dr. Stephen Kio, preached the sermon. Pastor Stephen, a distinguished guest, worked for the United Bible Society for many years and translated the Bible from English into Falam/Chin.

We were treated to a wonderful lunch after the worship – many different meats, and vegetable salads.

As always the Chin were very gracious, and their gratitude to Grace was overflowing.

And looking back over the day, my words to you, Grace, are these: Well done, good and faithful servants.

Founded in 2001, Free Wheelchair Mission is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to providing wheelchairs for the impoverished disabled in developing nations. Headquartered in Irvine, California, FWM works around the world in partnership with a vast network of humanitarian, faith-based and government organizations, sending wheelchairs to hundreds of thousands of disabled people, providing not only the gift of mobility, but of dignity, independence, and hope.

Friday Story: "Correcting Chuc’s Clubfoot"

Every Friday, I share stories of individuals who have received the transforming gift of mobility thanks to your generous support of Free Wheelchair Mission. Most of those people receive a wheelchair, allowing them to leave their homes, visit friends and family members, and re-connect with their neighbors.

But what happens when we meet someone who does not need a wheelchair, but instead needs help to be able to walk? What can we do for them? ...

BAPTISM - Presbyterians believe that baptism envelops our lives as Christians. As part of the covenant community, we baptize children as they grow into their faith. Believers are baptized as they make a decision to enter the covenant community and to follow Christ. When Christians die, we say that they have completed their baptism in death.

MISSIONAL LIVING - At the end of the Gospel of John, Jesus tells Peter, “I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” According to the Gospel writer, Jesus said this to indicate by what kind of death Peter would glorify God.

Having spent a goodly portion of my pastoral ministry in retirement centers, care centers, nursing homes, rehab facilities, and assisted living facilities, I think today’s version of this passage might read a little differently. Perhaps something like this ...

Happy Valentine's Day!

I pray this week you not FEEL very loved, but I also hope you are able to show someone else how much they are loved. This afternoon, I spent a few hours with my little girls, preparing Valentines for their class parties this week. I remember Valentine's Day when I was young was a day of great social anxiety; I was never sure if there would be any in my construction-paper plastered shoe box, and frankly I was afraid to pass them out to some kids for fear that they would misconstrue my meaning. These days, with young children at least, it seems the dominant classroom custom is that everyone should get a Valentine. And as I watched my oldest carefully print out the names of each of her classmates, choosing the child's favorite color for their name or drawing a special picture to remind her friend of a funny inside joke, I couldn't help but think that children teach us so much if we're just paying attention. They know how to love with abandon, and that's something the whole world could use a little more of.

In addition to that, please join me in praying for the following matters this week:

MYANMAR // Burmese government 'kills more than 1,000 Rohingya Muslims' in crackdown

For the last few weeks, we have been focusing our prayers on the Rohingya. Quite frankly, things keep getting worse. The reports from various human rights monitoring agencies are frighteningly awful. Recently, Pope Francis spoke out on behalf of the Rohingya, calling for their rights to be restored and their freedom to be respected. But it seems the world isn't really listening. "The UN has previously dubbed the Rohingyas, who are also denied access to university education and in 2013 were hit with a two-child policy, as "the most oppressed people on Earth".

"Pope Francis' comments should serve as a wake up call to the international community," Charu Lata Hogg, an associate fellow with the Asia Programme at Chatham House, told The Independent.

"Despite the scathing UN report and the stream of NGO reporting on the plight of the Rohingyas, there doesn't seem to have been much international condemnation. "Strong political leverages need to be exercised to stop this egregious assault on a stateless people."

Please continue to pray for the Rohingya people -- for the children and their families to be saved from destruction. May God have mercy on them.

ZAMBIA - It was dark, really dark. And it is not always the wisest choice to drive through the rough bush roads when the sky is black and evening has turned to night. But the radiator was leaking and the starter motor was broken. So every 40 minutes we had to stop and find water at the nearest borehole and ask some people from the villages to help push the truck. We were hours from our destination and not sure where to stop. I stood by the side of a quiet street where the truck was stopped yet again, wondering if I could sleep in the bed of the truck, wondering where my colleagues would rest if we did not make it to a guesthouse of some sort.

Out of the darkness came a group of men ...
