From Partners Relief & Development ... “Your 2020 Christmas survival guide”

Steve and Oddny Gumaer started Partners Relief and Development in response to the needs of refugees and displaced people from Burma, and now in the Middle East, as well. Their mission is to demonstrate, through holistic action, God’s love to children and communities made vulnerable by war in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and other conflict zones.

Your 2020 Christmas survival guide

How do you celebrate the most wonderful time of the (WORST) year ever?

As safely as possible.
Lots of board games and walks.
By helping those who have lost everything.
Hot cocoa, mulled wine, cookies, candles.
With loads of gratitude and hope.

2020 is the perfect year to embrace the Icelandic tradition of tucking into a new book and a chocolate bar on Christmas Eve. So everyone in my family will get a book (I ordered this one for myself) and a bar of this chocolate.

I will also spend some time reflecting on how for 9 whole months, when anxiety and contagion surrounded us all, you still thought of others. That might take awhile.

Because all this odd year long, you quietly, consistently, kindly, gave.

Bit by bit, you allowed us to ...

Thank you so much,

Jenn Tendero
VP of Strategic Engagement

• Ministers say holiday should be a time for family, gratitude

By Bob Campbell, Reporter

ODESSA, TEXAS - Christmas is a combination of so many things that the totality of it may be hard to grasp.

A holiday, a commercial extravaganza, a religious observance, a time of reflection — Christmas is all of those and more and clergymen say more focus is needed on its true essence to dispel confusion.

The Revs. Curtis Benninghoff, Michael Sis and Mike McGuire say the best approach is to see it in terms of its sacredness ...

BIRTH OF JESUS - Ever since my girls were big enough to hitch a ride on a luggage cart, they’ve been in love with hotels.

The run-of-the-mill places that our family visited before the pandemic seemed like king’s palaces to the tykes, who couldn’t wait to take a ride on the elevator.

How impressed the girls were with the plush pillows, flat-screen TVs and kid-sized refrigerators. Being able to commandeer the remote and get sweet treats from vending machines down the hall added to their delight.

I had those stays in the back of my mind when we recently read the story of Jesus’ birth as part of a reading lesson for my 4-year-old daughter. Her 6-year-old sister sat with us to listen ...

Thursday of the Fourth Week of Advent

"It’s almost here, it’s almost here!” A childlike joy sprung from my heart as I flipped my 2020 calendar and saw we were finally in December. Christmas is my most favorite of all holidays. As a child, every day that passed was one day closer to the joys that only Christmas and the arrival of baby Jesus could bring. So here we are now, the day before ...

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Trinity School students and faculty have found different ways to give back to the community during the pandemic.

This is the 16th year for Operation Bless the Children – families fill up backpacks for Hope Invasion ministry that distributes the bags to students in Mexico. First-grade teacher Terry Miller organizes the initiative every year, and her students help load backpacks for travel.

Upper School students created canvases for hospice patients, hosted a clothing and duffel bag drive for Fostering Restoration and a toy drive for Centers for Children and Families.

Kobi Lincoln, director of institutional advancement, said the student council will be donating $500 in gift cards to housekeeping staff at Midland Memorial Hospital. Impact Club held a drive for the Field’s Edge; the student group that collected the most toiletries would win a no-uniform day.

“Many of the things we usually do, like going to sing at the soup kitchen or visiting the nursing homes to sing Christmas carols, aren’t happening this year,” she said. “The Operation Bless the Children is something we do every year, but we have shifted our focus more to drives or through letter writing because in-person volunteering is so limited right now.”

PORCH PICTURES - At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Presbyterians researched their church histories in hopes of discovering how congregations responded to the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. Some were dismayed, though, to find that there was little to no mention of the flu in session minutes. Trinity Presbyterian Church, however, is making sure history doesn’t forget its response to the current pandemic.
