MIDLAND, TEXAS - First Baptist Church in Midland spent their Sunday assembling a drive-thru relief event.

The purpose was to help out Williams Boulevard Baptist Church in Kenner, Louisiana, which was heavily impacted by the hurricane.

“We knew some folks down there that needed some help, a church that we knew the pastor there, and so we decided to call him, get in touch with him, ask him how we can help him, and so we were able to send one truck with a generator, and now this we’re just doing supplies”, says Moe Bomer, the business administrator for First Baptist Church ...

LAYING DOWN OUR LIVES FOR ONE ANOTHER - I just don’t want to have to feel guilty being white. That’s what John said after my presentation at a family retreat I was facilitating for a church a few years ago. I was talking about the advantages that whites enjoy in American society that people of color do not always receive, referencing a classic article by Dr. Peggy McIntosh titled “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack.” In it, she points out that whites can typically agree with statements like, “If a traffic cop pulls me over, I can be pretty sure that I haven’t been singled out because of my race,” or “When I am told about our national heritage or ‘civilization,’ I am shown that people of my race made it what it is.”

As I was going through some of these statements, John interrupted me, saying that he didn’t really care about any of the advantages that McIntosh details ...

WORSHIP WITH JOY
Susie Selock
Volunteer, Illinois

"Climb a high mountain, Zion. You’re the preacher of good news. Raise your voice. Make it good and loud, Jerusalem. You’re the preacher of good news. Speak loud and clear. Don’t be timid! Tell the cities of Judah, “Look! Your God!’”
Isaiah 40:9

When my husband, Dan, and I were working with the MMM program in western Malawi in 2016, we happened to arrive in Malawi on a Sunday afternoon. One of our first images of Malawi was seeing groups of families walking along the road in their Sunday best clothes. While in Malawi, we had the privilege of joining them in worship on two Sundays.

On our last weekend in Malawi, my husband Dan was asked to preach at the Kakoma CCAP Church. It was a privilege and I remember us staying up the night before putting together a sermon by flashlight. The church was full on that sunny Sunday morning. We were blessed with the exuberant singing from five of their choirs. After Dan preached, the Elder in charge stated that although the church had no tangible gift to offer him, they did have the gift of a song. The women’s choir sang and danced in such powerful harmony that I imagined I had been transported to a choir of heavenly angels.

Coming from the Presbyterian denomination often called the “frozen chosen,” watching how the Presbyterian people in Malawi worshiped their God impressed me and brought me to tears. Their love of God was not hidden; it was expressed and shared with all. It reminded me of the power and strength of the God we serve and of His message of good news. Many times since that day, I have remembered that worship service and it always opens my heart to the joy of our God. Sing it out everyone! God has given you a song to sing.

Application Question: What is the song that God has given you to sing?

Prayer: Dear Father, thank you for giving us a spirit of strength and courage. Help us each day to hear your message and equip us with the voice to share your good news with others and to receive the good news from others. Amen.

ODESSA, TEXAS - Known as “The Weeping Prophet,” Jeremiah was also a very important one, husbanding Israel and Judah through their long enslavement in Babylon and writing two of the Old Testament’s key books, Lamentations and the one carrying his name.

BRIDGES OF LOVE
Kathy Manfredi
Volunteer, Illinois

Those from among you will rebuild the ancient ruins; you will raise up the age-old foundations; and you will be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of the streets in which to dwell.
Isaiah 58:12

As a volunteer with MMM, many of the most memorable experiences involved crossing bridges. Some were long and spanned rivers or other seemingly insurmountable divides. All were narrow, made of logs, occasionally with broken or rotting sections. A few bounced as we drove over them and one even had a turn in the middle. This year, these memories reminded me of other bridges we navigate as Christians.

Traditionally, bridges are built to connect areas that would otherwise be isolated or separated. This year, the pandemic has caused people to feel detached and isolated, but haven’t we experienced a sense of distancing and separation at other times in our lives? What divides individuals and what kinds of bridges are we called upon to build? Can’t poverty, inequity, loneliness, bitterness, injustice, dishonesty, betrayal, jealousy, pride, self-absorption, lack of trust, or lack of integrity also cause isolation and separation? How can we be repairers of these breaches? Can we build bridges when the chasms are emotional or societal? Can we still experience a sense of community?

While crossing the bridges in Malawi, it was important we headed in the right direction, to keep our wheels going straight, and to shift when necessary. Upon arrival, we were embraced within a community, bound together by faith and responding to God’s call.

I recently read an article about living in a “communion table spirit;” taking intentional steps to shift how we live and act together. In building emotional bridges, we are compelled to listen, to see each other as unique children of God, to have the right motivation, to form common goals, and to hear God’s call. Sections may break away, bounce, or even take a different turn. Regardless of these bumps and pitfalls, continue to pray and worship together, read the Bible, develop your faith and have fellowship. What could be greater than repairing a breach and extending love to God’s children?

Application Question: Do you feel isolated? Why? What bridges are you called upon to build? What shifts can you make to create the spirit of a communion table?

Prayer: Dear Lord, open our eyes and ears so we can see the isolation and estrangement around us. Open our hearts and help us to restore peace and unity. Make us repairers of the breach. Amen.

WE ARE ALL IMPORTANT TO GOD
Doug Kee
Volunteer and MMM Vice President, Michigan

This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 3:6

TDuring the past year of enduring the worldwide pandemic, many of us have been unable to move about as we normally do. MMM trips have been cancelled for two years due to restrictions on international travel. So we have focused on our immediate home communities and the suffering of many right in our own neighborhoods. It’s been great to see neighbors helping neighbors in times of need. But, I have heard increasing voices asking, “Why are we sending aid to Africa when there is so much need right here?”

Does God call us to restrict our Christian love just to our neighbors down the street? Aren’t people in Africa also our neighbors? I believe the text written by Paul to the church in Ephesus clearly answers these questions. Paul wrote that the mystery of the Gospel is that all “are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.”

Paul took his stewardship of Christ’s message to the Gentiles very seriously, to the point that he was abused and suffered in prison for the sake of the message of Jesus Christ, to bring all of us together under the lordship of Jesus. In a recent sermon, the pastor stated “we cannot believe that we are optional extras in each others’ lives in order to manifest what the Gospel is supposed to do.” We all need one another in Christ’s kingdom.

So I take this message to mean that we are called to pray for and support any neighbors in need, whether in our home towns or in distant African villages. Our friends in Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia are among the most vulnerable and marginalized people on the planet. The pandemic has impacted all of us, but the poor among us most severely.

In this time at home I have been glad to support local efforts to help those in need. But in following Christ’s message, I have also prayed for and sent financial support to MMM’s African team to continue the life saving work of the protected water program. God calls us to support our friends in need far away, even in times when life gets tougher at home.

Application Question: Have your priorities changed during the pandemic? Has your giving or service been redirected to local needs and away from overseas?

Prayer: Lord, it is difficult to see so much suffering and to decide who to assist. You teach us that we are not “optional extras” in each others’ lives. I ask your Spirit to guide my decisions on how I support brothers and sisters in need both here and in Africa. Amen.

YOU CAN'T DO WITHOUT
Reverend Fletcher Makala Mbewe
Kakoma C.C.A.P Mission of Synod of Nkhoma-Kamwendo, Malawi

One day the leaders of the town of Jericho visited Elisha. “We have a problem, my lord,” they told him. “This town is located in pleasant surroundings, as you can see. But the water is bad, and the land is unproductive.”
2 Kings 2:19

Life is a wonderful gift from God and all things around us complement life. Indeed there are many things that support life on a day to day basis. These daily activities have different contributions to sustain human life.

There are times one can live without friends, possessions, position, education, even money. But, water stands out to be more valuable above all that. We cannot live or do without water. Especially clean potable water for consumption and other uses.

We also have noted that water causes miscarriage to the land so much that plants and crops cannot do well. This means clean, good potable water is life to all living and productive plants and animals. Yes, providing clean potable water is paramount. When we cry to God that this water is full of diseases to us, through him we have seen you our brothers and sisters from the U.S coming to Malawi to assist us with well pumps to purify dirty water into sweet clean water. Which saves lives and brings back human dignity for the rural people in Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania.

This clean portable water is also related to Jesus Christ who told his disciples that “you won’t do anything without me” John 15:9.

Therefore Jesus is water for life given from God. Hence, we cannot do anything without Jesus and water.

Application Question: What do you value most in your life?

Prayer: Dear Lord, give us clean good potable water that will change our land into more productive and help us to avoid suffering from water borne diseases. Amen.

WITH BOTH HANDS
Jessi Stitt
Volunteer, North Carolina

And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
Acts 19:6

In the remarks of the head men and women I heard the phrase “manja a wiri” many times. It means with two hands or with both hands. It was often used as ‘we thank you with two hands’ or ‘we welcome you with both hands.’ It is such a beautiful image. We show appreciation by clapping with both hands. Or when we are overjoyed, we often clap.

In Malawian culture, you give and receive gifts and shake hands using both hands -- either together or with the left hand on the right forearm. It takes your full attention. It shows respect for the gift and the giver. We don’t do that. We are often multitasking, with our attention split, only paying partial attention to who or what is in front of us.

But here I am (was) in a village. The villagers did the hard manual labor for their well. The villagers will still have to walk and carry water to their homes. They don’t know me and yet they are welcoming me into their village with both hands. They are saying thank you with both hands, giving gifts that they can hardly afford to give. They look you in the eyes as they say thank you. Fully present and joyful and committed to their open giving and their new well.

It reminds me of a covenant made at summer camp. We agreed to giving at least three hugs a day. We went on to say that they had to be real hugs -- bear hugs. Not a one-arm shoulder squeeze but two arms around the other person. It puts you in the moment with the other person. They have your full attention for that moment.

So I am working at doing things with both hands. To thank people with two hands. To welcome people with both hands. To see people with both eyes. To be present and acknowledge others as children of God and worthy of full attention.

Application Question: What can you do with both hands extended?

Prayer: Dear God, Thank you for this day. For the ability to reach out and to receive. Help us to be blessings to others and to share your love. Amen.
