MIDLAND, TEXAS - Next to the Book of Obadiah in the Old Testament, the New Testament’s Epistle of Jude is the second-shortest book in the Bible, but it is very weighty with passages that are seen nowhere else like Jude 1:9: “But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!’”

The Revs. Vaughny Taylor and Gian Carlo Villatoro say there is no way to confirm the beliefs of many theologians that Jude was one of the brothers of Jesus Christ, but he had knowledge that no one else had ...

BUILDING FAITH CONNECTIONS - In the late 1980s, when I was serving as a youth group leader in my local congregation, my pastor invited me to attend a gathering that I recognize now as the early stages of a new movement for youth in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Even as I was being drawn headlong into the phenomenon that was — and still is — the Presbyterian Youth Triennium, I had no idea how the lens through which I viewed the PC(USA) was about to change. ...

SEEING
Reverend Ed Hoke
Volunteer, Illinois

"Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.'” John 4:13-15

A friend of mine on Facebook posts incredible pictures of different things in nature and then describes them. Many are things I have probably seen myself but never stopped to really look at them. She brings our attention to some pretty incredible things. I pointed out to her that she was a walking encyclopedia. She replied that she started last year to do a better job of seeing things.

It dawned on me that that is a great part of what makes humans unique in our world, the ability to see, or hear, or feel things in a unique way. Jesus “saw” this woman coming to the well. He didn’t just see her physically, but he saw her deeper, all the way through.

I think that is something we are called to do in this pilgrim walk through life, to see, to hear, to feel what is going on around us. It is a skill that can be learned and cultivated. It is essential, in my opinion, to be empathetic and sympathetic to the needs around us. My challenge to you today is to take the time to really look, really listen, really open yourself up to what is going on around you and do so, as much as possible, as though you were Jesus. He called us to imitate him. I think this is what he means.

Application Question: What and who will I see, really see, around me today?

Prayer: Lord, open my eyes that I may see, open my ears that I may hear, open my heart that I may feel, what you are revealing every moment of every day. Amen.

JESUS IS WITH US ALL THE TIME
Lewis Silungwe
MMM Field Officer, Malawi

"And Jesus came and spoke to them saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe all the things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20:9

Brethren in the Lord, this is a very familiar passage-the great commission. But I want us to look at it from a different angle. In the last verse Jesus is making a promise…”I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” I am very encouraged and motivated to soldier on all the time as I remember these words. They give hope! They speak life!

If we look at the passage and follow it, we see Christ start by assuring us that all authority both in Heaven and on earth is given to him. What else do we need? This assurance is enough. It is from the source, yes, from God. What shall we fear?

Christ is sending us to go make disciples. He knows that we are going into the world of unbelievers, the unsaved world, the unfavorable environment. That is why he says “! am with you always.” Christ says, “Go, make disciples.” Some preach, some teach and many other ways, but at MMM we do it all. We preach, we teach, we inspire, we motivate. We are the change villagers are waiting for, we are their answered prayer.

Though we journey through difficult roads and trails, valleys and hills, in scorching sun and unexpected rains and mud, scary bridges and terrifying darkness, with uncomfortable accommodation and meals… Remember the silent promise from Christ....”I am with you always even to end of the age.”

Application Question: What will you accomplish today, knowing that Christ is with you?

Prayer: Today, Lord, let us rise again with joy and gladness, knowing that Christ is with us always even to the end of the age. Amen.

LIGHT A LAMP
Betty Samelson
Volunteer and MMM Board Member, Colorado

"No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bushel basket or under the bed; he puts it on a lampstand so that whoever comes in can see it.” Luke 8:16

Years ago, I attended a church service where the priest gave his entire sermon on this parable with a bushel basket over his head. I kept wondering when he was going to take it off, but he never did.

It made me wonder how often God waits for us to take off the bushel basket and see the light and to be the light. Particularly this past year with imposed social isolations, I’m reminded of the parable and it’s often felt like I was wearing a bushel basket over my head. I’ve missed people in my life. Volunteering, shaking hands, hugging, seeing smiles on people’s faces, but especially my yearly trek to Africa.

Because part of the light in my life is MMM. I associate light with love and I truly love my time in Africa, being totally present to all the people in the villages and the extended family I’ve met with MMM. To be the hands and do the job that Tom says God saved for us. To be a part of bringing safe drinking water so that children won’t die. When I am giving my dedication at the well, I ask the villagers to take good care of their well. If they do, their children and their children’s children will be drinking good, clean, safe water.

People always say they receive more than they give when they are volunteering because it’s true. For me, part of the goodness I receive in Africa is because I have taken the bushel basket off my head and given all that I have, letting the light in and opening my heart fully.

Application: How will I let the light and love enter into all the things that I do today?

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me be your light and hands today. To show your love in all the people I encounter today. To not be afraid to be the person I am, to not hide under the bushel basket. Amen.

WHERE IS MY STRENGTH
Slade Exley
Volunteer, Mississippi

"I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Phillipians 4:13

In 2017 in the mountains near Chitipa, I had an humbling experience during a long, mountainous hike to several wells. The terrain was steep, the temperature was hot and the walk was long. After we walked over an hour to reach the first well site, my Field Officer told me the hikes to the next two wells would be much easier. That made me feel better – for the moment.

After about our third short, steep climb headed to the second well site, I became weak and faint, almost unable to walk. I asked the Field Officer for a minute to rest and take a water break. I thought to myself “Lord, I am fixin’ (a Southern term) to die here and they will never be able to get me out of this place.” I don’t see how the villagers can live in this environment. I paused for a short prayer and just asked the Lord for the strength to finish our work and hike back up the mountain to get back to the truck. I was truly humbled and I realized my only strength would have to come from the Lord. I had exhausted all my strength and energy.

After a few minutes of rest and a bottle of water, I felt we had to get moving again to finish and not get trapped in darkness since we still had a long way to go. The hikes continued to be rugged and steep at times. I just kept thinking and praying that the Lord had my back, and He did. We completed the next two wells and hiked back up the mountain to the truck.

This whole experience, which I have shared many times, taught me the necessity to rely on the Lord for strength during hard times. Whether the difficult times are physical, mental or emotional, the Lord is the source of my strength and help.

Application Question: Can you remember a time when God truly strengthened you? Will you share that story with someone who may be needing encouragement today?

Prayer: Lord, be our strength and help throughout whatever we face today. We thank you for your blessings in our lives and pray for assurance of your presence during difficult times and situations. We are honored to be your servants to fulfill the mission of providing clean water. Amen.

LEARNING CONTENTMENT
Reverend Suzanne Gorhau
Volunteer & MMM Board Member, Nebraska/Iowa

"I have learned to be content with whatever I have.” Philippians 4:11

The apostle Paul says he has learned how to be content with whatever he has. It’s something I need to learn, over and over. On my first trip to Malawi in 2001, what I missed most was cold drinks. One day, our truck got a flat tire. The villagers helped put on the spare, but we had to drive to a gas station in Mzimba to get the flat tire fixed. When we pulled into the gas station, I saw a refrigerator case with cold Cokes. I had two ice cold Cokes that day. I’ve never been so glad for a flat tire in my life.

When I got back home, I went on a retreat with my church. We had a cooler filled with ice and cold drinks, and I was disappointed because there weren’t any Diet Dr. Peppers, my drink of choice at the time. It had only been a couple of months since that two-coldCoke day, but I had already started to take things for granted.

Going to another country is great practice in learning to be content because often things aren’t like they are at home: different food, different accommodations, sometimes no electricity or running water, no internet connection or phone calls home to loved ones. If we can learn Paul’s secret of being content no matter the circumstances, our lives (and our trips to other countries) could be much more peaceful and joyful. I don’t have to have a cold Diet Dr. Pepper to be happy.

But I’m sure there were things Paul wasn’t content to do without. His calling and passion was to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, and he wasn’t content until he did all he could to make that happen. We, too, have a calling to make sure our brothers and sisters have clean water and enough food to eat, and we won’t be content until we do all we can to make that happen. That’s what I call “holy discontent.”

Paul’s contentment went much deeper than just being satisfied with what he had or didn’t have. His contentment came from God. The reason he was able to be in want at times was because he knew he had the most important thing: God. With God, he could face any situation.

Application Question: What is one thing I can learn to be content without?

Prayer: Dear God, help me focus less on what I don’t have and more on what I do have. Remind me that all I really need is you. Amen.
