In the News ... "West Texas Food Bank joins forces with JumBurrito for annual fundraiser: Because You Fed Me"
Staff Report
• Odessa American
ODESSA/MIDLAND, TEXAS - The West Texas Food Bankannounced Friday its partnership with JumBurrito for the 13th consecutive year in an endeavor to make a meaningful impact on hunger in the community. This festive collaboration, running from Sunday, November 12, to Saturday, December 16, is dedicated to JumBurrito Revolutionary Rewards Club Members, both current and new. JumBurrito is set to turn each member’s visit into an act of generosity. For every visit during the promotional period, JumBurrito will pledge to donate $.50 to the West Texas Food Bank, a contribution that translates into providing two meals to individuals in need. The initiative not only satisfies our taste buds but also nourishes the community it serves, a news release said.
To add an exciting twist to the season of giving, each visit will also serve as an entry for JumBurrito Revolutionary Rewards Club Members to win 1,000 Rewards Points. With six winners to be selected, the promotion encourages active participation while offering a chance to earn appealing rewards.
“This marks the 13th year of our cherished partnership with JumBurrito, and we are incredibly grateful for their ongoing commitment to our cause,” expressed Libby Campbell, CEO at the West Texas Food Bank, in the release. “Their generosity for every member visit is a testament to the shared values of compassion and community support that define this annual fundraiser. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity.”

C.S. Lewis Daily - Today's Reading
On Goodness
It has sometimes been asked whether God commands certain things because they are right, or whether certain things are right because God commands them. . . . I emphatically embrace the first alternative. The second might lead to the abominable conclusion . . . that charity is good only because God arbitrarily commanded it—that He might equally well have commanded us to hate Him and one another and that hatred would then have been right. I believe, on the contrary, that “they err who think that of the will of God to do this or that there is no reason besides His will.” God’s will is determined by His wisdom which always perceives, and His goodness which always embraces, the intrinsically good. But when we have said that God commands things only because they are good, we must add that one of the things intrinsically good is that rational creatures should freely surrender themselves to their Creator in obedience. The content of our obedience—the thing we are commanded to do—will always be something intrinsically good, something we ought to do even if (by an impossible supposition) God had not commanded it. But in addition to the content, the mere obeying is also intrinsically good, for, in obeying, a rational creature consciously enacts its creaturely role, reverses the act by which we fell, treads Adam’s dance backward, and returns.

A CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR DR. MELVA WILSON COSTEN - Over her long career in higher education and in hymnody, Dr. Melva Wilson Costen taught her students that music is a gift from God that can lift our spirits and serve as a refuge during difficult times. “It speaks,” said the Rev. Addie Peterson, eulogizing Costen at Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, “when we don’t know the words to say.”
Costen, described as a “premier professor in Reformed Christian worship and African American Presbyterianism,” died Sept. 8 at age 90 ...

C.S. Lewis Daily - Today's Reading
I then went westward across the moor, with the telegraph posts on my right and began to descend from such a point that the long straight reach on whose upper end Rockford stands, was straight in front of me. After a steep scramble down bracken and heather I got into thick and silent woods. Every kind of tree grows here, all at an acute angle on the steep hillside. There is plenty of moss and ivy and biggish rocks and boulders, some covered with green, some sticking through like bones of the hill. I sat there and again came very near the real joy, but did not quite arrive.
After this I went down to the water’s edge. The stream was smooth here and the valley bottom quite flat (on this side) with big forest trees dotted at wide intervals…There was one quite awesome place where I looked down through dead fir trees into a black hole lighted with foam at the bottom: and suddenly a swallow flew out just above the water.

HUNGER & HOMELESSNESS SUNDAY - Roughly 421,400 people were unhoused in the U.S. last year, and 127,750 of them were chronically unhoused, meaning they didn’t have a place to stay for a year or more, according to National Alliance to End Homelessness data. Unhoused rates have been climbing nationally by about 6% every year since 2017, the alliance said. The increase in the number of unhoused people comes when housing costs are soaring and prices for essentials like food and transportation continue to rise.
This is why Congregation-Based Community Organizing (CBCO) groups are so essential ...

On God
The voice of God indeed daily calls to us; calls to the world to abandon sins and seek the Kingdom of God wholeheartedly. O that we may all hear the call of the Father and, sometime, at last be converted to the Lord. In silence and in meditation on the eternal truths, I hear the voice of God which excites our hearts to greater love.

VETERANS DAY - Originally called Armistice Day, Nov. 11 was set aside to honor veterans of World War I. In its official resolution, Congress sought to set aside time to “commemorate with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through goodwill and mutual understanding between nations … with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.”
Unfortunately, the guns of August 1914, which led the world into the chaos and devastation of World War I, were not silenced forever. To this day, America’s men and women have served in the Armed Forces and deployed around the world. This service has also impacted families as well ...

C.S. Lewis Daily - Today's Reading
A blind man has few friends; a blind man who has recently received his sight has, in a sense, none. He belongs neither to the world of the blind nor to that of the seeing, and no one can share his experience. After that night’s conversations Robin never mentioned to anyone his problem about light. He knew that he would only be suspected of madness. When Mary took him out the next day for his first walk he replied to everything she said, “It’s lovely – all lovely. Just let me drink it in,” and she was satisfied. She interpreted his quick glances as glances of delight. In reality, of course, he was searching, searching with a hunger that had already something of desperation in it. Even had he dared, he knew it would be useless to ask her of any of the objects he saw, “Is that light?” He could see for himself that she would only answer, “No. That’s green” (or “blue”, or “yellow”, or “a field”, or “a tree”, or “a car”). Nothing could be done until he had learned to go for walks by himself.

In the News ... "Story of Lazarus proves Jesus’ deity"
![]() |
| Painting by Giotto di Bondone |
By Bob Campbell, Reporter
• Odessa American
ODESSA, TEXAS - The story of Lazarus in the Gospel of John 11 shows that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and he has the power of life over death.
Ministers Mark Roosinck and Mike Vestal say it also illustrates the difference between man’s time and God’s time.
The Rev. Roosinck, pastor of Westover Baptist Church, said Jesus’ key statement in Chapter 11 is in verses 25 and 26 where he says, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live even though he dies and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.
“Jesus was always directed by the Father to do exactly what the Father wanted him to do,” Roosinck said.
Asked why Jesus wept in John 11:35 when he knew he was about to bring Lazarus back to life, the pastor said it was probably because he was sympathetic to the grief of Lazarus’ sisters Mary and Martha and his friends.
Roosinck said Jesus and his disciples had often stayed with Lazarus and his sisters and they were all good friends.
Vestal, minister of Westside Church of Christ in Midland, said the story “shows that God cares when people grieve and that Jesus is the resurrection and the life.
“There is a large portion of unique material looking at the life of Jesus in John,” he said. “The resurrection of Lazarus is one of the last miracles we read about in the earthly ministry of Jesus because it happened not long before the crucifixion.
“It shows the power of Jesus over death because Lazarus had been dead for four days and it came to mean a lot to the apostles after Jesus arose on the third day.”
Vestal said the story also shows “that God works on a different timetable than we do" ...

C.S. Lewis Daily - Today's Reading
I hope no reader will suppose that ‘mere’ Christianity is here put for- ward as an alternative to the creeds of the existing communions. . . . . It is more like a hall out of which doors open into several rooms. If I can bring anyone into that hall I shall have done what I attempted. But it is in the rooms, not in the hall, that there are fires and chairs and meals. The hall is a place to wait in, a place from which to try the various doors, not a place to live in. For that purpose the worst of the rooms (whichever that may be) is, I think, preferable. It is true that some people may find they have to wait in the hall for a considerable time, while others feel certain almost at once which door they must knock at. I do not know why there is this difference, but I am sure God keeps no one waiting unless He sees that it is good for him to wait. When you do get into your room you will find that the long wait has done you some kind of good which you would not have had otherwise. But you must regard it as waiting, not as camping. You must keep on praying for light: and, of course, even in the hall, you must begin trying to obey the rules which are common to the whole house. And above all you must be asking which door is the true one; not which pleases you best by its paint and panelling. In plain language, the question should never be: ‘Do I like that kind of service?’ but ‘Are these doctrines true: Is holiness here? Does my conscience move me towards this? Is my reluctance to knock at this door due to my pride, or my mere taste, or my personal dislike of this particular door-keeper?’
When you have reached your own room, be kind to those who have chosen different doors and to those who are still in the hall. If they are wrong they need your prayers all the more; and if they are your enemies, then you are under orders to pray for them. That is one of the rules common to the whole house.

"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. Tim Tam, Spiritual Director of the Amarillo, Texas-based ministry. "Through our relationships, God reveals needs and opportunities for service. As we come along side the poor, new friendships develop and doors for ministry open. As we serve, God provides the resources to supply for the needs he reveals."

From Outreach Foundation ... "Reaching Out Further - November 2023"
We serve churches! How can your church and The Outreach Foundation work together? Keep reading to find out!
A Love For The Outreach Foundation!
The First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood, Mississippi, has a special love for The Outreach Foundation ever since Rev. Bill Bryant, a former pastor, became The Outreach Foundation’s leader. The congregation loves The Outreach Foundation’s opportunities to serve others through missionaries, trips, and emergency responses. Thank you, Outreach, for your faithful legacy!
First Presbyterian is 177 years old, but it is blessed to be a church with half of its membership under 49 years of age. 40-50 children come forward each Sunday for the children’s sermon, and the 35-member children’s choir gives a spiritual boost every time they sing. The church just purchased a gas station next to the educational building and leveled it to be a covered drop-off and parking lot for the growing kindergarten.
Racial reconciliation is supported through ecumenical events such as the community Thanksgiving service. Also, the church is a major supporter of nearby Delta Streets Academy, a downtown school for young men at risk of dropping out of regular public school. This school has been recognized nationally for the work it is doing.
Each Advent the Greenwood community looks forward to the outdoor “Singing Christmas Tree,” a tradition now in its 41st year, featuring a live nativity and 100 singing adults and youth presenting the story of the birth of Jesus in narration, song, and drama. When the downtown closes its streets for a night of shopping and carriage rides, First Presbyterian welcomes everyone to hear the free concert “Classics at First,” when acclaimed statewide musicians inspire in our acoustically resplendent and beautiful Sanctuary.
First Presbyterian’s heart for mission is facilitated by The Outreach Foundation’s faithfulness. For instance, after sending a mission team to Liverpool, the church hosted Shapoor Ahmadi, an evangelist to the Persian diaspora in Liverpool, UK, to preach and teach on World Communion Sunday in October 2023. First Presbyterian is blessed by The Outreach Foundation to be a conduit of God’s love to the world!
Dr. Andrew Chaney, Pastor
Dariush, a Muslim background believer living in The Netherlands, is a worship leader, evangelist, refugee advocate, pastor, leadership coach, social media guru, conference leader, and SAT7 PARS project leader. The Outreach Foundation is honored to amplify the work of Christ happening through Safehouse.
My eyes were opened to the reality of the persecuted church in today’s world. I had no idea of the conversions taking place in Iran!
Thank you for educating me about what God is doing among the Persian-speaking people in this world.
I had no idea that the fastest-growing church in the world is in Iran.
These testimonies are among the many we have heard out of the recent visit that The Outreach Foundation coordinated between Dariush and three U.S. congregations - Grace Community Church in Hilton Head, SC, First Presbyterian Church in Mooresville, NC, and GRACE Church in Bethlehem, PA. Dariush, his wife, Hodeis, and their 18-year-old daughter Bita came at our invitation to strengthen the connections among congregations and people who have gone to The Netherlands, Germany, and Türkiye with him. It was a special joy to give congregations in the U.S. a chance to hear their inspiring testimonies firsthand. Dariush led congregations in worship and his family shared their testimonies. They met people in Sunday School classes, mid-week educational events, among mission teams, in social settings, and in youth groups. Dariush enjoyed his first U.S. football game while the ladies went shopping.
Rev. Dave Rockness (FPC Mooresville):
It is exciting to hear how the Gospel is spreading among Muslims. Personally, I felt a strong connection to Dariush and his family as did most of the folks who were able to meet him. It was a tremendous blessing to our church! We scheduled 90 minutes and after two hours, people didn’t want to leave…they left spiritually inspired and hungry for more.
Reverends Doug Stewart and Marnie Crumpler (GRACE Church, Bethlehem, PA):
What a joy to have Dariush and his family with us at GRACE Church Bethlehem! God is so clearly using their inspirational story and their many gifts to grow His kingdom. It’s our privilege to partner with them.
