MIDDLE EAST - Long before the recent revolutions in the Arab world, the impact of religion on statecraft has been a critical matter. Now it has gained greater urgency. Most crucial among the emerging issues is how legislation must be transformed to reflect current realities, particularly to protect the rights of minorities. Some Middle Eastern churches are taking a proactive role to create a vision that benefits all citizens in society. One such effort was a meeting of the Fellowship of Middle East Evangelical Churches—an association of Protestant churches in the region—in February 2012. Church leaders discussed the Arab Spring uprisings and the momentous changes they brought about as well as ongoing conflicts in parts of the Middle East, especially in Syria, Egypt, and Israel-Palestine.
