GLOBAL WEEK OF ACTION AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE: IRELAND / NORTHERN IRELAND - Northern Ireland’s second city has such a divided history that Unionist/Protestant and Nationalist/Catholic communities don’t agree whether its name is Londonderry or Derry. It is also split by a river. During the civil strife of the 1970s and ‘80s, most Protestants moved from the Cityside to the Waterside, leaving behind historic churches with limited resources. Several years ago I was invited to facilitate discussion among leaders of St. Augustine’s Church of Ireland. Their future looked bleak, but with a beautiful building and the drop in violence members felt more open to using it outside of Sundays. .
