Partners Blog: "Up in the mountains"

Steve and Oddny Gumaer started Partners Relief and Development in response to the needs of refugees and displaced people from Burma. Their mission is to demonstrate, through holistic action, God’s love to children and communities made vulnerable by war in Burma.

Up in the mountains

High up in the mountains of Kachin state, 9,500 feet above sea level there is a small internally displaced persons camp of more than 600 people. It gets bitterly cold there in winter with up to 1 foot of snow in the camp and 5 foot in the surrounding area. It’s too cold and the ground is too rocky to be able to grow anything so they live off what little aid they receive from the Catholic and Baptist churches.

The people are hardy but friendly, walking around in flip flops in the middle of winter ...
