EL PASO, TEXAS - Hear the word "kermes," and your mouth probably starts watering at the thought of a pack of hot, gorditas stuffed with seasoned ground beef, bits of potato and topped with lettuce, tomato and cheese.
If you're not sure how to pronounce the word (try "caremess"), you're probably not from these parts or familiar with the popular neighborhood church festivals.
In El Paso, Catholic churches are starting to have their big fundraising festivals, with games like loteria, local bands, some raffles and their famous gordita and enchilada booths.
