Sometimes, no translation is necessary!

Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?"
(Matthew 25:37)

After traveling over roads that were not more than bike trails, and crossing bridges that looked ready to collapse at any minute, our MMM team was always thrilled to be greeted with singing and dancing by the African women. In village after village, the truck stopped and women began arriving, usually with babies on their backs and children following closely behind.

When greeting the villagers, my attention was always drawn to the older mamas, the grandmothers (called gogo in the villages). My partner and I were both grandmothers back home, so we already had a connection -- we needed no translators for that. Conversations often sounded like this: “You gogo? Me gogo.” That’s all it took; we were friends.

At one well, I noticed an older gogo sitting away from the rest, watching the well dedication ceremony. I walked over to her and asked if I could help her move closer to the celebration. She nodded her head, put her hands in mine, and I raised her up.

At the completion of a dedication, one of my favorite things was to splash the children with the beautiful, clear water coming out of the spigot. Not this time, though. Instead, I asked my gogo friend if she would like to drink, and I put my hands together to catch the water. She leaned over and drank from my hands. It was one of those amazing moments that only come once in a lifetime. What a blessing!

Thank you, donors -- you bring the celebrations!
