ODESSA, TEXAS - The Rev. Vernon Ray Groce has been a prison guard, a martial arts instructor, a nurse and a tile, sheetrock and painting contractor. As a teenager, he worked at his parents’ truck stop, fixing flats.

That background gives him an understanding of working people and compassion for their problems, says the 61-year-old Grandview Church of God pastor. “We live a busy life and because of that, it’s stressful,” he said ...
