Your gifts to the COVID-19 Emergency Appeal continue to be needed…in places like South Sudan
As the world awaits a vaccine for the coronavirus, the challenges facing our global partners continue to grow. To date, your generous gifts have allowed us to disburse over $280,000 to meet the urgent needs of the Church in already-fragile places, like South Sudan. Late in the summer, the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan (PCoSS) gathered vulnerable members of its community-of-faith in Juba, many of whom were displaced from other cities because of the ongoing civil war, to both raise awareness about staying safe in the pandemic as well as to distribute much-needed food and hygiene supplies.
The PCoSS Task Force on COVID-19 is directed by two pastors, the Rev John Yor Nyiker and the Rev Michael Muot Put. They explained that those who gathered were seen as trainers who, in turn, could return to their communities and inform their congregations and neighborhoods about what they had learned about stopping the spread of the deadly virus. Food parcels, water containers, masks, and sanitizers were distributed. The Task Force will follow up with the attendees by phone to guarantee accountability and effectiveness.

A concurrent activity of the Task Force is to go into areas where the government or non-profits are not yet reaching and provide food relief (flour, oil, lentils) to the elderly and disabled. Many of these precious souls are living in makeshift “camps” with minimal shelter provided by pieces of corrugated tin and odds and ends of wood.
Outreach's recent grant of $9,200 has provided life-giving support to both of these ministry initiatives of our Presbyterian family in South Sudan.
