FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH NEAR ELY, IOWA, SETS ITS MISSIONAL SIGHTS ON UKRAINE - The lines of 164 years of Czech history at First Presbyterian Church Near Ely, Iowa recently blurred with current-day Ukraine, and the result was unexpectedly amazing.

How did such a thing happen at a small country church, where traditional mission activities have included monthly collections for the food pantry; “Tractorcade,” an annual group tractor ride across Iowa’s countryside; and instructional “Kolach Kamps,” where the kitchen becomes the classroom and bakers learn to craft the perfect kolach ...

ELLEN SMITH, REGIONAL LIAISON FOR CENTRAL & EASTERN EUROPE, GIVES UPDATE ON UKRAINIAN REFUGEE WORK - Ellen Smith, World Mission’s regional liaison for Central and Eastern Europe, led a packed and thought-provoking mini-course during Synod School on the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s mission in Ukraine.

“Ukraine is a complicated country. It is divided linguistically, by faith and by culture, certainly,” Smith told a lecture hall full of Synod School attendees. More than 500 days since Russia invaded Ukraine, PC(USA) partners in neighboring countries — Moldova, Hungary, Lithuania and Poland among them — have set up refugee centers to care for the many people fleeing the fighting, including children and people with special needs...

A total of four containers of wheelchairs are being shipped from the factory in India and are expected to arrive in the coming weeks.

Free Wheelchair Mission has had a long-term relationship with Invacare Europe, and since their Action 1R wheelchairs are already compliant with European Union standards, they were a natural fit to source the wheelchairs for distribution into Ukraine.

WEST TEXAS - In April, the United Family raised $187,073.17 for Save the Children Ukraine through a company-wide donate-at-the-register campaign. Save the Children Ukraine is a non-profit providing relief efforts to children impacted by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

This donate-at-the-register campaign ran in stores across Texas and New Mexico, including United Supermarkets, Market Street, Albertsons Market and Amigos. As with past donate-at-the-register campaigns, guests were able to add any dollar amount to their grocery bill at checkout. The proceeds are going directly to support Save the Children – Ukraine.

“Just like so many people out there, we’ve watched this tragic conflict unfold and wondered how we can help,” said Sidney Hopper, president of The United Family. “This fundraiser was an opportunity for anyone who wanted to help the people of Ukraine — especially the children. This incredible amount of funds will go to provide healthcare, food and other vital supplies as this conflict continues — all thanks to the generosity of our guests.”

The Save the Children organization works every day to provide children a healthy start to life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. When crisis strikes, Save the Children is one the first organizations on the ground and one of the last ones to leave.

MEMORIAL DAY - War is neither necessary nor romantic. The deaths that come from war are needless and tragic. Those who give their lives in war may be remembered and honored for their selfless sacrifice, but the wars which brought their deaths are not glorious adventures. Our entry into war may at times be unavoidable but must never be sought. We mourn those killed in war on Memorial Day as we grieve the pain of loss and deprivation ...

Friday Story: “Not on the Ground”

As events continue to unfold in Ukraine, would you continue to keep the people and the situation in prayer?

In this story that aired on NBC News on March 9, 2022, a Ukrainian family is interviewed while recovering in a Kyiv hospital. The father is using one of our GEN_2 wheelchairs, which one of our former distribution partners provided to the hospital.

Although we do not currently distribute wheelchairs in Ukraine, this story reminded us that the work we do—together, with you—can make a lasting impact in the places we have served ...

In the News ... "Rev. Gore gives insights into Ukraine"

OA Photo by Jacob Ford
• Former First Baptist pastor of missions says Ukrainians ‘are a special people’

By Bob Campbell, Reporter
Odessa American

ODESSA, TEXAS - The Rev. Jesse Gore went on his first mission trip to Ukraine 18 years ago and began forming a devotion to its people that has taken on a very disturbing tenor since the country was invaded by Russia Feb. 24.

Having served as the First Baptist Church’s pastor of missions from 2009-16, the Rev. Gore is getting hundreds of messages each week from Ukrainians he has befriended during over 30 trips there, the most recent one in 2019.

Still pursuing his Join Jesse in MISSION POSSIBLE ministry since opening Gore Insurance Agency with his wife Penny, Gore said, “I’ve been blessed to share Jesus on five continents, but it is the people of Ukraine who continue to bring me back.

“They are a special people when you look at their hospitality and especially the way they’ve been abused, starved and slaughtered through history. Stalin starved millions and the Nazis did a job on them, too. There was a huge amount of Jewish people in the country prior to World War II.

“They are extremely intelligent, musically gifted and very well educated. Many speak four or five languages. I’ve had several Ph.D.’s and a couple of physicists in my conversational English classes there.”

Along with spending a lot of time in the capital city of Kyiv, Gore has also preached and taught in Poltava, Kharkiv, Kherson and Odesa, which is the Ukrainian spelling for the southern seaport. Local attorney Spencer Dobbs paid for his first trip.

“The tons of messages I’m getting about the war keep me praying because I know what a gracious people they are,” he said.

Referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Gore said, “Seeing them molested by a Russian-speaking Hitler causes a mixture of anger, sadness and sympathy that is overwhelming.

“When I see all this happening, I believe it’s going to usher in the second coming of Jesus. Russia is the Gog and Magog that we see in Revelation 20:7-9.”

Asked if the Ukrainians he knows thought the invasion would happen, he said, “I think some of the older ones expected it, but the younger ones have been overtaken with disbelief.

“We did our best to turn our backs when Russia invaded Crimea and took it over in 2014. They didn’t annex it. They took it over by force.” ...
