RUSSIA - Twenty years ago, following the breakup of the Soviet Union, the new Russian Federation adopted a constitution that guaranteed “the right to freedom of conscience, to freedom of religious worship.” But memories fade slowly. As I meet with Presbyterians and others across the U.S., I am regularly asked, “Is there religious freedom in Russia today?’’ And my responsibility is to honestly answer, “Yes and no.”.

MINUTE FOR MISSION: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS - On this day, we remember victims and celebrate survivors of domestic violence. Jeremiah 29:1, 4–7 is a fitting passage for this day. Jeremiah railed against all forms of injustice. Sometimes called “the weeping prophet,” he turned his wrath on those who preyed upon the most vulnerable members of society.

BELARUS - When Presbyterians do mission in partnership, our sense of call regularly leads us to difficult places in the world. Twenty-two years after the breakup of the Soviet Union, the government of Belarus remains the most authoritarian in Europe and the least reformed among the 10 nation-states that emerged from the European part of the U.S.S.R.

ROMANIA - A PC(USA) ruling elder went to Romania to adopt a child from the state- run orphanage system in the early 1990s. Upon seeing the deprived condition of the children, he decided to do something for them. During the 41-year dictatorship of Nicolae Ceauceşcu, thousands of children were abandoned to a government orphanage system that did not have the capacity to administer even basic care. These children were mistreated, ignored, and abused. Unfortunately, attitudes and practices are slow to change, and much that was true in the early 1990s is still true today. But NOROC (New Opportunities for Romanian Orphaned Children) is making a difference.

HUNGARY - Dencsháza is a village of 650 residents in the southern part of Hungary. In 2009 its school and children’s center (tanoda) was opened through the collaboration of the Reformed Church of Hungary Mission Centre, the village primary school and Reformed congregation, and the local government. The residents of Dencsháza have multiple disadvantages. Twenty-five percent of adults are active but unemployed, and 30 percent of the population declare themselves as Roma.

The school program supports Roma students aged 10–16 who live in and near Dencsháza. It offers after-school care and tutoring for children with learning difficulties. The school helps students gain healthy self-esteem and develop problem-solving skills.

CZECH REPUBLIC - If anyone knows about scarcity in the Czech Republic, it is the Roma people. They have often had to survive on little and have experienced more than their fair share of discrimination. However, many in the Roma community live a life of abundant joy. LITHUANIA - For six years we have gone to a “deserted place,” a large men’s prison in the deep Lithuanian forests. The place is called Pravieniškės, a Russian word for “those who were blamed.” One young man we tutor there has had a rough time recently. He was involved in a mêlée in the dining hall and lost all his privileges—he was confined in a special lock-up for five months. He wrote, saying: “Last week I got news that I won’t be able to be in your class. That’s very sad for me. I hoped that your classes [would] be some ‘getaway’ from my dark days, like some spot of light in the night. Life here is pretty tough.” What can we offer in such a place?

The China Aid Association is a non-profit Christian organization - based in Midland, Texas - with a mission to uncover and reveal the truth about religious persecution in China, focusing especially on the unofficial church. GERMANY - In 1980, East and West German churches, together with peace groups, introduced an Ecumenical Peace Decade. Starting annually on the third Sunday before Advent, it has become more and more an integral part of the ecclesiastical year.

The question of how to seek, witness, pray, and serve for peace is unfolded each year by choosing a common biblical theme that relates to the latest state of ecumenical discernment. General topics have included peace education, human rights, social justice, and the integrity of God’s creation. The specific issues of the root causes of war and the preconditions for peace have also been addressed.

MINUTE FOR MISSION: WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY / PEACEMAKING OFFERING - For many years Colombia has suffered what is perhaps the worst internal displacement crisis in the world. It is estimated that 3.3 million people have been displaced since 2000. Every day, 323 Colombians are driven violently from their homes, and 75 percent of them are women and children.

Members of the Presbyterian Church in Barranquilla, Colombia, held a meeting with 20 such women from the displaced communities of Colombia’s Atlantic coast. Before the gathering, some congregation members were asking why the presbytery put so much emphasis on work for human rights and peace. But that was before they met these women and heard their storie.

The Match-and-Match is Back ... let's keep rolling through October!

Founded in 2001, Free Wheelchair Mission is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to providing wheelchairs for the impoverished disabled in developing nations. Headquartered in Irvine, California, FWM works around the world in partnership with a vast network of humanitarian, faith-based and government organizations, sending wheelchairs to hundreds of thousands of disabled people, providing not only the gift of mobility, but of dignity, independence, and hope.

The new and improved model!
Buy ONE wheelchair for $72, and send FOUR! Magic? No. What's 's happening is that local supporters of the Free Wheelchair Mission have once again arranged for "double matching funds" for contributions received from right now, until the end of October.

Want to take one for a test drive? During normal business hours, visit the lobby at the Texas Street entrance of First Presbyterian Church-Midland, at the northwest corner of Texas and A streets, on the west side of downtown Midland. You can give the gift of mobility. The cost of $72.00 is a bargain to us ... but it is a life-changing gift to impoverished and disabled recipients ... and for a limited time, your contribution will be matched ... and matched again ... reaching not one, but FOUR recipients.

Please note on your check "Wheelchair Matching Gift."

ITALY - The Waldensian Church is rooted in the teachings of the 12th-century preacher Valdesius, which also influenced Francis of Assisi. Both men underscored the poverty and simplicity of the early church. The community of faith that gathered around Valdesius survived centuries of persecution. The current constitution of the Italian Republic, approved by Parliament in 1947, granted the Waldensian Church freedom of worship. The Italian government did not sign into law the right to religious freedom for the Waldensian Church until 1984.

FRANCE - In Grenoble, at the foot of the French Alps, the Reformed Church runs a grocery store for residents of poor neighborhoods. Once a week we need to get food for 400 people. Volunteers wonder every week how they are going to feed all these people. When we read together the story where Jesus fed more than 5,000 in the Gospel of Mark, the volunteers spontaneously identified themselves with the disciples. And that is understandable! Then, with a deeper reading of the text, the volunteers discovered that they were part of the crowd too! They realized that they also were in need, not of bread, but of relationships. They were not only volunteers coming to serve others but also “poor” people coming to seek friends with whom to share joys and sorrows.

GLOBAL WEEK OF ACTION AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE: IRELAND / NORTHERN IRELAND - Northern Ireland’s second city has such a divided history that Unionist/Protestant and Nationalist/Catholic communities don’t agree whether its name is Londonderry or Derry. It is also split by a river. During the civil strife of the 1970s and ‘80s, most Protestants moved from the Cityside to the Waterside, leaving behind historic churches with limited resources. Several years ago I was invited to facilitate discussion among leaders of St. Augustine’s Church of Ireland. Their future looked bleak, but with a beautiful building and the drop in violence members felt more open to using it outside of Sundays. .
