• Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary
AUSTIN, TEXAS - The Reverend Dr. Robert M. Shelton, Jean Brown Professor Emeritus of Homiletics and Liturgics and former President (1996-2002) of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, died in Dallas, Texas, on March 4, 2018.
Robert Shelton joined the Austin Seminary faculty in 1971 and was named the Jean Brown Professor of Homiletics and Liturgics in 1982. He served as academic dean for fifteen years and as president for six years until his retirement in 2002. Shelton’s presidential leadership was critical in steering the Seminary through its Centennial Celebration, in implementing a culture of institutional planning, and in guiding the Seminary’s first comprehensive fundraising campaign. He delivered the 2007 commencement address to a class in which his wife, the Reverend Frances Tilton Shelton (MDiv’93), received the Doctor of Ministry degree.
“Across Bob Shelton’s long tenure at Austin Seminary, he was a steward of the Seminary’s interests, in ways both heralded and unheralded, at many critical junctures,” said Austin Seminary President Theodore J. Wardlaw. “During his years at the Seminary, he had a huge formative impact upon many grateful students and colleagues.”
Ordained in the Cumberland Presbyterian tradition, Shelton came to Austin Seminary after teaching for three years at Memphis Theological Seminary and serving as pastor to Park Avenue Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Memphis, Tennessee. From 1963 to 1969 he served as pastor of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Jackson, Tennessee, and prior to that he served other churches in New Jersey and Tennessee.
He was president of the Council of Southwestern Theological Schools, treasurer of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians, and served on numerous committees and boards of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He served the church abroad, traveling to Germany, Asia, and Latin America to conduct and attend various seminars and retreats; in 1970 he was a delegate to the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in Nairobi, Kenya. In 1993, during the only sabbatical year he ever took while serving on the Austin Seminary faculty, Shelton was elected and served as moderator of the 163rd General Assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Shelton earned a BA from Maryville College, a BD from Memphis Theological Seminary, and a ThM and a PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary. He authored two books, A Changing Universe, An Unchanging God and The Use of Things and wrote numerous articles on preaching and worship. He led workshops, seminars, and preaching missions in churches, presbyteries, and ecumenical groups. Upon his retirement from Austin Seminary, the Board of Trustees named the Seminary chapel—to which he was especially devoted—in his honor. Following retirement, Shelton served in interim pastorates for First Presbyterian Church, Shreveport, First Presbyterian Church, San Antonio, and First Presbyterian Church and Lake Highland Presbyterian Church, both in the Dallas area.
Shelton is survived by his wife, Fran, along with their children, Tammy, Jim, Omi, and Sarah, and five grandchildren.
A service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, at First Presbyterian Church, Dallas; the Reverend Dr. R. Kenneth Peters (MDiv’83) and the Reverenced Rebecca Chancellor-Sicks (MDiv’08) will officiate.
Around Midland and around the world, loving and leading all people to deeper life in Jesus Christ.

"Syria's Eastern Ghouta has become a "death sentence" for children as heavy bombing is killing scores of young people trapped in the besieged enclave, aid agencies said on Tuesday.
"The airstrikes have been unrelenting in a Damascus suburb, where frames of bombed buildings loom over ghostly streets. Hundreds of lives have been lost in less than two weeks of a government siege of the suburb, eastern Ghouta. Dozens of children are among the dead. Many have been crushed by the collapsing walls of homes leveled by missiles. The siege has been deemed "one of the most pitiless onslaughts in this long-running and brutal civil war" by the top United Nations human rights official, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein. Families have headed into basements and dank tunnels, with small cookstoves, flour and warm clothes. Children, born into war, bring what they love: Their toys." Read more here ...
May this poignant and intimate look at the lives of Syrian children spur us on to pray for their childhoods to be restored and their lives to be protected.

LOCAL // School Safety
In light of the Parkland shooting and continued talks about gun reform and mental healthcare, please continue to pray for students in school to be able to learn in peace and safety. This isn't a faraway problem... it's right here in our own neighborhood. Midland High School, across the street from our church, has been placed on lock-down twice in the last few weeks due to reports of weapons. Please pray for families and teachers of troubled students -- may their outcries be heard and responded to in a timely manner to prevent future tragedies. Please pray for district leaders and administrators who often face decisions about how to best respond to potential threats. And please pray for students who may be dealing with increased anxiety and fear about school and the threats there.
One Faces of Children intercessor suggested that we use driving through school zones as a reminder to pray. As we slow down to safely drive past the school, use that time to pray for the students and teachers inside and in schools across the country. I thought that was a great way to remember.
Praying with you,
Carrie

C.S. Lewis Daily - Today's Reading
Presented by Bible Gateway
Today's Reading[Tirian said,] “Now, Dwarfs, you are free. Tomorrow I will lead you to free all Narnia. Three cheers for Aslan!”
But the result which followed was simply wretched. There was a feeble attempt from a few dwarfs (about five) which died away all at once: from several others there were sulky growls. Many said nothing at all.
“Don’t they understand?” said Jill impatiently. “What’s wrong with all you Dwarfs? Don’t you hear what the King says? It’s all over. The Ape isn’t going to rule Narnia any longer. Everyone can go back to ordinary life. You can have fun again. Aren’t you glad?”. . .
“Well,” said the Black Dwarf (whose name was Griffle), “I don’t know how all you chaps feel, but I feel I’ve heard as much about Aslan as I want to for the rest of my life.”
“That’s right, that’s right,” growled the other Dwarfs. “It’s all a plant, all a blooming plant.”
“What do you mean?” said Tirian. He had not been pale when he was fighting but he was pale now. He had thought this was going to be a beautiful moment, but it was turning out more like a bad dream. . . .
“Do you mean you don’t believe in the real Aslan?” said Jill. “But I’ve seen him. And he has sent us two here out of a different world.”
“Ah,” said Griffle with a broad smile. “So you say. They’ve taught you your stuff all right. Saying your lessons, ain’t you?”
“Churl,” cried Tirian, “will you give a lady the lie to her very face?”
“You keep a civil tongue in your head, Mister,” replied the Dwarf. “I don’t think we want any more Kings—if you are Tirian, which you don’t look like him—no more than we want any Aslans. We’re going to look after ourselves from now on and touch our caps to nobody. See?”
