2018 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive set for next Saturday
MIDLAND/ODESSA/BIG SPRING, TEXAS - The 26th Annual Stamp Out Hunger event is getting underway! Local residents are encouraged to place a bag of food out by their mail box for their letter carrier to return to the West Texas Food Bank.
Residents will start receiving Stamp Out Hunger Bags in the mail by the end of the week.
If you do not receive a branded Stamp Out Hunger Bag, don’t worry, you can use a bag of your own.
Residents are encouraged to donate nonperishable food items, and are asked to please not donate anything in a glass container. Glass containers can break and become a safety issue, not to mention if the food inside is spilled, it can create a giant mess!
The National Association of Letter Carriers is excited to host the nation’s largest food drive on Saturday May 12th. This is the 26th year for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which is always held the Saturday before Mother’s Day.
The West Texas Food Bank is appreciative of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, and looks forward to working with the many volunteers it takes to pull this food drive off.
If you leave a bag out for your letter carrier and it is not picked up, you may take it to your local post office, or bring it to the West Texas Food Bank.
A post event food truck rally is planned at the offices of Sims and Guess Realtors. From 5-8 food trucks and jumpers will be available. The WTFB will be on hand collecting food as well.

WAW Wednesday ... "5/2/18 -- There's a River Jordan in BZE City - did you know?"
"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. Tim Tam, Director of the Amarillo, Texas-based ministry. "Through our relationships, God reveals needs and opportunities for service. As we come along side the poor, new friendships develop and doors for ministry open. As we serve, God provides the resources to supply for the needs he reveals."
WAW Wednesday: "5/2/18 -- There's a River Jordan in BZE City - did you know?"
Luke's New Life from The Word at Work on Vimeo.
Friends,
If you've been to Belize on one of our short-term mission trips, you may have heard us say, "Ministry is what happens when we're on our way to do something else." Our schedule, our agenda, our plan for serving God may tempt us to ignore the Holy Spirit's direction. Thankfully, the Spirit doesn't give up on us!
My team from 26:12 was finishing up a week of visiting clients of the Belize Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation (BH&PCF). We'd been to Orange Walk and Blue Creek and we'd just seen the last patient in Belize City. We were headed back to the office to spend time with the other volunteers. We had supplies to unload. We were hot and tired. We had a dinner reservation. We had a place to be and an agenda. But ...
Susie Mauldin & Nurse August (BH&PCF volunteers) were hopeful we would squeeze a little more time from the day and meet Luke. We would find Luke on Albert Street "hustling" to purchase food and pay his electric bill. The team was up for it -- and so we headed to downtown Belize City.
We were introduced to a young man with an infectious smile, dancing eyes, and a gentle spirit. "Hi Susie!" he said, as she approached with a plate of food and a bottle of cold juice. "Susie's like my mom," he told us. He welcomed a hug from Nurse August and the rest of us greeted him warmly. We heard his story, of how he came to lose his 2 front teeth (to robbers who beat him on Christmas Day). We listened as he spoke of the challenges he faces with paying the electric bill since his mother died. How his family struggles to care for themselves, let alone care for Luke, whose paralysis was caused by a gun-shot wound. He shared that he just recently was discharged from the hospital because of grave complications. Luke was running low on hope.
My 26:12 team included a RN, and Occupational and Physical Therapists. Their first purpose for being in Belize was to minister to physical needs - but we were on one of the busiest streets in downtown Belize City - there was no way we could examine him or carry him home. So, after a few minutes we prepared to leave. We prayed with Luke and as we said a collective Amen he smiled and said, "I want to be baptized." I admit I was caught off guard. Luke was so anxious to return to God - and he wanted to be ready! I looked at Susie and said, "I suppose you have your next assignment!" She asked Luke if he'd professed Jesus as the Savior of his life and he said yes. She said she'd see what she could do and away we went.
Yes, that's right. We walked away. We had another team to meet and ... a schedule to keep and we were going to be late ... I heard God's spirit ask, "Why wouldn't you baptize Luke right now? What's stopping you?" I kept walking...
We were almost ready to load up in the van and I simply couldn't keep quiet anymore - I blurted out to the team, "Is there a reason why we wouldn't baptize Luke right now? Today? I mean, I have a bottle of water! It seems like this is what we are supposed to do!" The team enthusiastically agreed and we headed back. In case you can't make it out in the video above - Luke says, "My soul and my heart belong to God. He made me so he's gotta take me back!" His smile says so much more, though, don't you think?
Susie and Nurse August returned the following Friday with a Bible for Luke and to make plans to to attend Sunday worship at a Church near the River Jordan (as we will always now refer to Albert Street). Luke will be reassured of how loved he is by his creator - and that the Lord's mercy and grace and everlasting life are most assuredly his.
If we are mindful, we'll see the Word at work all around us.

Marking a special day ‘out west’
Yesterday had me marking a special day out here, in the far western reaches of Texas, reaching back over the centuries to recall a day of celebration and thanks near the end of a long and arduous journey.
I was marking a time when a band of European settlers were seeking new opportunities in a new land. It was a venture that did not pass quickly or easily, there were delays of all sorts – some natural, and others political. Even by the standards of that time, centuries ago, the journey challenged the bodies and the souls of all – men, women, and children. Yet they persevered until they reached the gateway to their destination. There, on the banks of the waters, they paused to celebrate, and give thanks.
That celebration included a religious observance, along with political proclamations and the performance of a play written by one of the European settlers. And there was a great feast, as well, with food provided by the new arrivals and by the local indigenous peoples who had lived there for uncounted years. It was a a event of sharing, to which all were welcome … an all-too-short time of hospitality between the two groups.
“We were happy that our trials were over,” one participant recalled, “as happy as were the passengers in the Ark when they saw the dove returning with the olive branch in his beak, bringing tidings that the deluge had subsided.”
The time? April 30, 1598. The place? The banks of the Rio del Norte (more commonly known today as the Rio Grande), which would someday become the community of San Elizario, near the city of El Paso, Texas. The new arrivals to this part of the New World? A group of 500 Spaniards that included soldiers and priests, colonists with their wives and children, and livestock – all led by Don Juan de Oñate.
Some of us out here call it THE First Thanksgiving. Needless to say, there is some debate over that. There are plenty of claimants to that title in various locations around the country (including that observance by a band of English Puritans in Plymouth, Massachusetts) ... but they all came years – some, even decades – after Oñate’s celebration.
Me? I’ll celebrate Thanksgiving in November, along with almost everyone else … though the meal I put out that day will probably include green chile in the cornbread stuffing, with tamales on the platter next to the turkey, and a a couple of gravy boats - one filled with cream gravy, and the other with red chile sauce …
¡Damos gracias!

A little girl, the same age as my own eldest daughter, and her three older brothers woke up this morning just a few miles from where my children were waking up. They woke up under the same bright blue sky with the same soft breeze. But today she woke up with no daddy, and all he did was go out for a bike ride with friends. A driver plowed into three riders last night and shattered so many lives in an instant; a heartbreaking loss for our entire community that will reverberate for generations. And as her mama stands looking out the window at the rising sun over her kitchen sink, I can only imagine how she must barely be able to breathe. How do you take those first steps forward when it feels like you're tumbling headlong into the darkest abyss? Oh God, it must feel dark.
Little Gia was born with a broken heart, and how it must have broken over and over again in the years she spent in an orphanage. But in what seemed like a fairy tale ending, she was adopted, had heart surgery, and lived the sweetest and happiest life on a farm, clutching baby rabbits and holding baby chicks in the palm of her hand, surrounded by the nurturing love of a family. Over the last few weeks, we've been praying for her as she fiercely battled to overcome a suddenly failing heart and lungs. She lost her earthly battle this past week, and now her family is burying her... and as her mama stands looking out the window at the rising sun over her kitchen sink, I can only imagine how she must barely be able to breathe. How do you take those first steps forward when it feels like you're tumbling headlong into the darkest abyss? Oh God, it must feel dark.
It feels like madness. The drunk driver gets away unharmed while the man on the bike, a father and community leader and lover of people, is instantly gone. A family goes to the ends of the earth to bring home their daughter, and she dies a few years later. It makes no sense. There's no equation one can follow to sidestep the pain. It feels like we're being swallowed up, tumbling headlong into the darkest abyss.
We can't see you, Father God, but we are standing on the promise that you never forsake us. In some ways, it feels like the greatest sort of human stubbornness to me... this clinging to you when we can't see you in the darkness. But you still remain.
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.
Romans 8:26
Help us know how to pray, Father God. We don't have the words to fight this darkness. Sometimes we don't know how to find you in the darkness. Help us not to lose heart. Amen
Praying with you,
Carrie

Amen
Praying with you,
Carrie
