Teichert Family Update ... “God is Still at Work”

The family of Karl and Jenny Teichert are serving the Lord as missionaries with OC Africa, in South Africa. They moved to Johannesburg in November, 1997 with their four children; Ann, Scott, Stephen and John. Karl serves as the Southern Africa Director of the Southern Africa Regional Team. Their vision is to see a healthy, Bible-based church established in every unreached village and community in South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia and beyond. Their strategy is to partner with key African church leaders to research, train, and mobilize the body of Christ to complete the Great Commission. They are striving to equip local leaders in Southern Africa to reach their nations for Christ and send missionaries into other countries as well.

“God is Still at Work”

Dear friends and family,

We may have felt like life went on hold for the past 16 months, but God’s work never goes on hold. Amid stories of hardship and suffering, stories of victory and unexpected fruitfulness have emerged. Here are just a few:

From the Philippines:
For many years, the Lord has blessed church members to make disciples using Outreach Bible Studies (OBSes). When lockdown came, a switch was made to Outreach Bible Studies by Group Chats (OBS GCs), an opportunity created when local cellphone providers began to give away free data — at a minimal level just strong enough to chat. This method really clicked with Filipinos, especially under COVID restrictions! Pastor Nonoy trained 15 of his members to lead OBS GCs resulting in 173 new believers. Pastor Gerry trained his members who now have over 40 OBS GCs, with over 500 new believers. When Pastor Joe held a training for 73 youth from a few churches, they were eager to start their first OBS GCs that day! The team foresees that even after COVID, OBS GCs will continue to be a unique and powerful tool for making disciples.

From Italy:
OC worker Mihai Lundell represents Europe on the board of the multi-organizational Global Member Care Network. When the pandemic hit, Mihai and the board decided to go online with their 30-day member care training courses. They expected a few hundred to sign up. They were blown away. By the end of three courses, they had trained 15,000!

From South Africa:
A growing vision to multiply Disciple Making Movements developed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 900,000 meals were distributed through the Local Ecumenical Action Network. With every food parcel, community pastors shared the love of Christ and started new Discovery Bible Studies. Karl followed up with a Disciple Making Multiplication Workshop with over 50 community pastors. Each leader set goals to accelerate a discipleship-making process toward the planting of new forms of churches.

From Portugal:
One of Sepal’s workers has a surfing ministry. (Sepal is the Latin American branch of the OC Global Alliance.) In March, he produced a tool called “Easter in the Language of Surfers.” It went viral and was translated into several languages and was downloaded 3,500 times in 29 countries. And this is just one tool! Last year we saw 834 new ministry tools created within the OC Global Alliance.

It wasn’t a year like any other in OC’s history. Yet, as Paul said in 2 Timothy 2:9, “God’s word is not chained.” Those words resonate across the OC Global Alliance today. We’re seeing God on the move in the midst of the pandemic: opening hearts, forming leaders, and multiplying disciple-making communities where none existed before.

Together for the kingdom,

Karl and Jenny

COLLEGE AND YOUNG ADULT SUNDAY - Did you know that UKirk stands for University-Church (or kirk, a reference to our Scottish roots)? It is the name adopted in 2012 for the 200-plus PC(USA) and Cumberland Presbyterian-related collegiate ministries across the nation. The names of each ministry are as varied as the colleges that are their mission fields — UKirk or Presbyterian Campus Ministry or Presby Student Ministry or United Campus Ministry — yet what unites all of our network ministries is their passion for welcoming young adults into Christian communities of faith and practice where they can explore their faith and discern God’s call upon their lives ...

The Free Burma Rangers (FBR) is a multi-ethnic humanitarian service movement. They bring help, hope and love to people in the war zones of Burma (Myanmar) and the Middle East. Groups send teams to be trained, supplied and sent into the areas under attack to provide emergency assistance and human rights documentation. Karen State, Burma

Dear friends,

Day Pu No Village is a small Karen village located about seven miles from the Thailand border, surrounded by jungle and rice fields and situated on the banks of the Yunzalin River, right where it starts to transition from a fast-flowing mountain torrent to a wider, more pastoral watercourse. The village is accessible by foot and a new seasonal dirt road. On the afternoon of 27 March, villagers in Day Pu No noticed the sound of aircraft, not normal for this remote area. They knew it could only be Burma Army aircraft – no one else would be flying there, but the Burma Army hadn’t attacked by air here in over 20 years ...

From @mmm_water ... "What are the Field Officers up to?"

Sharing the love of Jesus by providing safe, clean, sustainable sources of drinking water to the extreme poor in sub-Saharan Africa, Marion Medical Mission is one of our mission partners at Grace Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas, and we STRONGLY encourage you to read the following to learn more about - and pray for! - their mission.

MMM Photos
What are the Field Officers up to?

Many water organizations do provide clean drinking water, but maintaining the wells after they are built is something most find difficult to achieve. Marion Medical Mission has a maintenance system in place that works. The key to the maintenance system is building a well the village communities know how to maintain and can afford to maintain.

Marion Medical Mission has 21 Field Officers, each living in an area covering roughly 3,000 square miles. The MMM functionality monitoring system enables the Field Officers to oversee the functionality and maintenance of the wells in each area.

Each year, the Field Officers visit a stratified random sample of 100 wells from among the 1,000-2,000 wells built in their area. This process is designed to give MMM and its donors a documented, objective estimate of the overall functionality of MMM wells.

MMM’s Functionality Monitoring System also detects problems providing a way to initiate corrective action. If the Field Officer observes construction and siting issues, the names of the builder and supervisor for that well are recorded in the database so the Field Officer can work with them to improve performance.

The Field Officer inspects each of the 100 stratified random sample wells and interviews the community, filling a detailed survey questionnaire on the Android Tablet about all aspects of the well’s functionality, including the condition of the structure and the pump, the quantity and quality of water, and the well’s recent maintenance history. In addition to the GPS coordinates, the Field Officer also takes a photo of the well to visually record its current condition. If there are maintenance issues with the pump or structure, these will be discussed with community leaders, the local Zone Management Team, and the maintenance people, to encourage and enable better performance.

Each of the four MMM program areas in Northern Malawi, Central Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia has the equipment and software to take the survey information from the Androids and convert it into usable spreadsheet form.

Our goal is to provide safe, sustainable, sources of clean drinking water that will meet the villagers’ needs, not just the year the well is built, but indefinitely. Join us!

From Outreach Foundation ... "The Tete Province Clinic Has Officially Opened!"

The Tete Province Clinic Has Officially Opened!

Dear friends,

I am overjoyed to report that our health clinic in Tete Province in Mozambique has been officially opened! I received word from Sebber Banda. Sebber said, "Clinic finally opened. We give all the Glory to God Almighty."

The new health clinic is in the rural village of Madzimaera. We have built a school and a church in this village and drilled a well. This clinic is about an hour's drive by vehicle to the nearest hospital in the border town of Zobue. Transportation to the hospital would be a formidable problem for the villagers who live around this clinic. There are no cars and most villagers travel by walking and a few bicycles.

The staff of the clinic will be the following: the health assistant/clinic officer, a general nurse, a midwife, and a general technician. They will treat all but the most serious injuries and diseases and life-threatening maternal deliveries. There is a triplex that will house the staff. Lighting and electricity will be provided by solar panels and 12-volt batteries.

Blessings,

Berry Long, Outreach trustee

Joy Bringers Photo
“Introducing Gabriel and Gloria Francis”

Dear friends and family,

We are honoured to introduce you to Gabriel and Gloria Francis. They have been one of our OC Africa Associates since 2016. It has been a joy to serve the Lord together in ministry and growing friendship for many years.

Gabriel and Gloria are dual citizens of Nigeria and South Africa and have resided in Johannesburg for the past 21 years. They began their careers in veterinary medicine and electrical engineering, respectively. They are ordained ministers of the Foursquare Church International and served as missionary church planters and senior pastors in West and Southern Africa for 24 years. They have also served as mission-based directors with Youth With A Mission, Namibia and South Africa, for several years. They are blessed with three adult children; Glory (27), Peace (25), and Emmanuel (23).

Gabriel is presently the founder and executive director of Joy Bringers. This non-government organization seeks to set up a family of affinities, communities of transformation, that seek to transform people from poverty to productivity through training, mentoring, networking, support of leaders, research, and advocacy. Several stories originated in the launch and development of Joy Bringers.

Here are some of their testimonies:

On November 9, 2001, after experiencing a car hijack and being hospitalized, Gabriel heard an audible voice of God saying, “Where do the people who shot you reside? If they know my Word, they will not do what they are doing.” This incident led to the registering of the Joy Bringers organization in 2005 with the vision to break the cycle of crime.

On February 12, 2014, after 10 years of running the organization, Gabriel had a series of dreams in the form of a vision. The latest dream was a thirst from the lack of water in a city in darkness. He heard a voice saying, “Keep driving; there is water at the outskirts of the city.” They got to a place with two reservoirs of water, and upon drinking, there was before them a large group of joyful families of different age groups under floodlights in a field.

They began to harvest large crops from the soil (Matthew 9:35-39, Luke 10:2-3; Isaiah 9:1-4). Laborers in the garden under the covering of God’s presence, reaping the harvest (Genesis 2:5). This dream confirmed the call to see people in families of affinities transformed from poverty to productivity. The mission is to establish people with joy at heart, joy at home, and joy at work, through character, skill, and entrepreneurial development.

PRAYER POINTS:

• Pray for the Joy Bringers’ board and management teams to lead the organization in establishing holistic transformation as they navigate into the unchartered territories ahead of them.
• Pray for new strategies of leadership development that will result in setting up communities of transformation in the African cities.
• Pray for Gabriel’s doctorate studies on transformational leadership as they seek to be engaged in research and advocacy – seeking new ways to bring hope and value to the poor and needy in their communities
• Pray for their family; that their three children will be positioned to serve God’s purpose in their generation.
• Pray for Gloria and Gabriel, for understanding and wisdom as they serve various domain leaders in the African continent.

Thank you for walking with us in God’s mission with precious servants of God like Gabriel and Gloria,

Karl and Jenny
