ABILENE, TEXAS - When Susan Payne arrived in Abilene to begin serving as interim pastor of First Christian Church, one of the first things she was “warned” of was a call from Cliff Stewart, pastor of neighboring First Central Presbyterian Church.
It is a long-standing tradition for those two churches, and three others, to host the Holy Week Luncheon series. Each church hosts the luncheon on a particular day. The minister of each congregation preaches at another’s church.
Payne would get a call, she was told, from Stewart giving her the theme of the series and an assigned scripture for her sermon.
“He already has,” she replied, barely having time to set her suitcase down ...
