Steve and Oddny Gumaer started Partners Relief and Development in response to the needs of refugees and displaced people from Burma, and now in the Middle East, as well. One of the most common problems we see in the clinic in Shan State is vitamin B1 deficiency. Each of us only needs a tiny amount (around 1mg) in our diet each day to stay healthy. It is present in most foods, but the staple food of Shan State is polished rice and this is the one food where there is very little. Polishing the rice – taking the brown shell off - removes most of the vitamin B1. So, if someone’s diet is mostly rice – and not much else, the vitamin B1 levels will become low ...
