LUBBOCK, TEXAS - People are being urged to donate blood as soon as possible, as blood centers nationwide are now reporting the negative impact recent severe weather has had on supply levels.
Vitalant, the nation’s second largest community blood service provider, released a statement Thursday detailing the effects the “bomb cyclone” winter storm had, as donation centers closed and blood drives were canceled in the wake of the storm this week in Colorado and the plains states that reached residents in New Mexico and Texas as well.
Centers in Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota lost nearly 1,000 blood donations as a result of the closures from the storm. In addition to the loss, Vitalant locations were also unable to transport blood samples to our laboratory for testing and delaying hospital use due to the high winds and canceled flights ...
