From @austinseminary ... "The Reed" for July 2019
• Alumnus JD Herrera new vice president
The Board of Trustees of Austin Seminary has called The Reverend Jorge Daniel (JD) Herrera (MDiv’15) to be the next vice president for enrollment management, effective August 1. The department he will head is responsible for student recruitment and financial aid administration. An ordained United Methodist pastor in the Rio Texas Conference, Herrera has served Parker Lane United Methodist Church, Austin; Manor (Texas) United Methodist Church, Winchester (Texas) United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church, Smithville, Texas; and St. Mark United Methodist Church, Austin.
An emerging leader in the denomination, Herrera served as a young adult delegate to the Global Young People Convocation in Manila in 2014, and was a Global Young People’s Convocation small group leader in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2018. He has served since 2017 on the Conference Committee of Youth Ministry, has been a member of the United Methodist Action Reach-Out Mission by Youth (UMArmy) Board, has served on the District Vitalizing Congregations Team, and is currently on the District Superintendency Committee of the Capital District.
JD received his bachelor of science degree in sociology, with a minor in religion, from Florida State University in 2005. He entered Austin Seminary after working in the aviation industry. Upon gradation he was awarded the Max Sherman and Barbara Jordan Fellowship, an annual award for one member of the graduating class who demonstrates a significant potential to integrate faith and public policy. JD continues to have a passion for liberation theology and its intersection with populations of poverty and color.
Herrera says, “I connect well with a variety of people, many of whom are not currently in pulpits, but now is when their unique voices are most needed. I’m looking forward to continuing my work of developing and building young leaders and inviting new people into the work of the church here at Austin Seminary.” JD joins two Austin Seminary alums in the Office of Enrollment Management: William West (MDiv’16) and Megan McMillan (MDiv’19).
JD is married to The Reverend Abigail Parker Herrera, who serves Tarrytown United Methodist Church in Austin.
