• Far from home, migrants contemplate plans for Christmas in Juarez

JUÁREZ, MEXICO - Of all the Cuban traditions Rosi Guilarte left behind in her months-long journey to seek asylum in the U.S., fire-roasting a pig is the one she misses the most.

She daydreamed out loud on the shelter patio with a hot cup of café con leche, about the caldosa stew of yucca root, white boniato sweet potato and vegetables cooked over an open fire. And the precious time cooking, spent with family and friends.

Miguel Gonzalez, the Presbyterian minister of the Pasos de Fe shelter where Guilarte and 15 other Cuban migrants have been staying, was coming around to the idea of the whole pig and a fire pit.

He wasn't sold on the idea of a slaughter on the patio ...
