From @austinseminary ... "The Reed" for June 2019

• New leaders for the church!

On May 26, forty-one men and women received their diplomas from Austin Seminary, representing an extraordinary level of commitment to academic study and practical preparation for ministry. Included in that number are seven who earned the Master of Arts in Youth Ministry degree, the first to do so from Austin Seminary. These students have followed a hybrid model of seminary education, serving churches full time and attending classes on campus several times a year. Among the Class of 2019 are three global partners, students from Africa who augmented their ministries by way of generous international student fellowships. Ten of the graduates are seasoned pastors and chaplains whose Doctor of Ministry degrees represent several years in intensive study and practice for the benefit of present and future congregations

• Leaders share their vision for the Certificate in Jewish-Christian Relationship

Austin Seminary's newest certificate program, The Certificate in Jewish-Christian Relationship, begins this fall with a course, "A Pastor, Priest, and Rabbi Walk Into a Bar(mitzvah): Worship in Judaism and Christianity," taught by Father Larry Covington, Rabbi Alan Freedman, and Reverend John Leedy. The winter course, "Reading Exodus Together: Jewish and African American Witness," will be taught by Rev. Daryl Horton and Rabbi Neil Blumofe. The Spring 2020 course,”Exploring Women in the Bible and Theology,” with Rabbi Amy Cohen and Reverend Krystal Leedy, will round out the first year of the program.

We invited those who will teach in the first year to discuss this new project.

• Alumna Bobbi Kaye Jones appointed to Zbinden Chair

The Board of Trustees at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary has called The Reverend Bobbi Kaye Jones (MDiv’80) as professor in the Louis H. and Katherine S. Zbinden Distinguished Chair in Pastoral Leadership and Ministry. The appointment becomes effective July 1, 2019; she will teach students in the practical areas of pastoral ministry: church administration, congregational leadership, stewardship, and liturgy.

“I am so pleased that the Reverend Bobbi Kaye Jones is assuming the mantle of the Zbinden Chair,” says Seminary President Theodore J. Wardlaw. “She has served across her career as a best-practices model of parish ministry for our students to learn from and emulate. As an effective pastor, preacher, teacher, and leader, she demonstrates the synthesis of all of the disciplines of theological formation that blend so well to form a picture of integrity for the sake of the church. Our students will be blessed by her presence among us, and I look forward to her service on our faculty.”
