FBR Report: "Burned Homes and Hiding in Caves: 10,000 Villagers Flee Burma Army"

The Free Burma Rangers (FBR) is a multi-ethnic humanitarian service movement. They bring help, hope and love to people in the war zones of Burma (Myanmar) and the Middle East. Groups send teams to be trained, supplied and sent into the areas under attack to provide emergency assistance and human rights documentation. Burned Homes and Hiding in Caves: 10,000 Villagers Flee Burma Army

3 May 2022
Thaton District, Karen State, Burma

Dear friends,

The Burma military has pounded Karen villages in the Lay Kay area of Thaton District, Karen State, from April 20, 2022 to the present. They are using fighter jets to bomb, rocket and strafe, destroying homes, and sending people into hiding. Burma Army ground troops shoot machine-guns and heavy mortars as well as fire artillery as the Burma Army wages a campaign of terror against the Karen people.

Thank you for helping us provide relief for these people. With your help, we have been able to be with them, treat the sick and wounded, provide emergency food, water, tarps, and share the love of Jesus ...

PAUL'S ADVICE - It’s funny how things that you experienced as a young person — that didn’t seem so important at the time — pop up in your later years and remind you of the kind of person you are called to be. So it is that this passage from Paul’s advice to the Philippian Christians has come flooding back to me as I was reflecting on the terrible conflict that continues to poison our society, both in our country and around the world ...

In the News ... "'Heavy on our hearts': Lubbock remembers fallen heroes at Memorial Day services"

LAJ Photo by Mateo Rosiles
“'Greater love has no one than this, to lay one's life down for their friends,' John 15:13”

By Mateo Rosiles, Reporter
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

LUBBOCK, TEXAS - The sound of Taps being played and a 21 gun salute could be heard on Memorial Day at the City of Lubbock Cemetery.

The Nancy Anderson Daughters of the American Revolution hosted the 19th annual Memorial Day Service honoring the fallen men and women who served in the U.S. armed forces.

The service at the city cemetery was one of several around Lubbock and the region Sunday and Monday, including the annual ceremony hosted at the same time Monday at Resthaven Funeral Home and Memorial Garden and Sunday evening's service at Second Baptist Church.

Regent Tammy Rosenbaum of the DAR presided over the event at the city cemetery, which included renditions of the National Anthem and God Bless America and a speech from retired U.S. Air Force Sgt. Carl Tepper, who recently won the Republican party primary runoff for Lubbock's Texas House 84 seat.

“This is the day (to) remember those people who did not make for various reasons,” said Tepper. “Their loss is heavy on our hearts.”

Flags of the different branches of the U.S. Armed Forces that is pulled by the Veterans of War M.C. group. In the middle is a statue honoring the veterans of war. Even though Memorial Day is about remembering the fallen, Tepper said it is a time to mourn with and connect with the family and friends they left behind.

“This is about taking a moment to remember and show respect to those families,” he said. “They're the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice.”

When people think of soldiers making the ultimate sacrifice, Tepper said, people will usually think of men and women charging into a battle. However, he said, that's often not the case.

Often, men and women are lost in training exercises, he said, but that does not diminish the loss of the soldier or the grief of the family.

“Often than not, these are our best and brightest,” Tepper said. “If someone lost a family member in training, I promise you their loss is as great and as honorable as any action they had against the enemy, so please remember those people as well.”

He said it's not only the fallen soldiers, but also those who have or are currently serving in the armed forces, who understand and are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect the liberties of America ...

In the News ... Opinion: "Reaction to Uvalde: Our society needs hope; humanity needs love"

Pastor Daniel Stephens
• Understanding that every human heart has the capacity for evil places the blame not on a policy or lack thereof but on the man or woman in the mirror.

By Pastor Daniel Stephens, Mid-Cities Church, Contributor
Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND/ODESSA, TEXAS - How are we supposed to process the senseless taking of 19 innocent, young lives in Uvalde? Another wave of devastating news crashed on the anxious psyche of the American public. Last week, it was a racially motivated massacre of 10 innocent lives in Buffalo, New York, and now this. One can barely comprehend the most recent evil act before another overtakes it in the headlines. Opinion makers and others who identify as journalists provide brief factual talking points followed by an empathetic sentiment, followed by a political discourse that places the blame at the feet of their perceived enemies. It’s the gun lobby. It’s the immigrants. It’s a mental health problem. It's violent video games. As the instigators of rage culture on Fox and CNN clothe themselves in the righteous indignation of their own thoughts that echo from their media chambers, what is really happening? And why do these horrific outbursts of violence occur? ...

In the News ... "Nourishing the Nations aids Kenyans"

• Sends groups of six to 24 people to Kenya two or three times a year

By Bob Campbell, Reporter
Odessa American

ODESSA, TEXAS - What Chris and Leesa Harrington saw during their first trip to western Kenya in 2012 was so compelling that they came back the next year not only to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ but also to help the impoverished residents with water, food and shelter.

Then the Rev. Harrington, pastor of missions at Immanuel Baptist Church, and his wife kicked the operation into high gear with their 2017 formation of the nonprofit group Nourishing the Nations, building 250 homes, digging three water wells and feeding 750 children each weekday at churches in the town of Ahero and the villages of Awasi, Boya, Kogotu, Mangina and Rapogi.

Asked why the area has inspired such a strong commitment, Harrington said, “It’s the people of Kenya.

“They have such a welcoming spirit and there is such a need that we don’t see here in the United States. They grow what they eat and if it doesn’t come up, they’re likely going to starve. There is a hunger for the Gospel message and our people have fallen in love with that. Three hundred to 350 from our church have gone to Kenya over the years, some as many as 10 times.”

Harrington said Nourishing the Nations is a separate entity from Immanuel Baptist Church.

Funded by donations, the program averages spending $3,500 per month for food. The 10-by-12-foot houses with mud walls that it builds cost $500 each and the wells it has drilled, providing clean water for the first time, ran $7,000 apiece.

“There are 40,000 to 50,000 people in that area,” the minister said. “We partner with the same folks each time and have made relationships with them. They’re like family. We go over there and it’s like a family reunion. Some of the students have grown up and we feel like they are our brothers and sisters.”

The Rev. Corey Speer, Immanuel’s pastor of discipleship, said Nourishing the Nations sends groups of six to 24 people to Kenya two or three times a year and will do so again this summer. “We’ve built a lot of houses for widowed ladies,” Speer said.

“We have equipped the area pastors to lead the churches, providing discipleship and serving hot meals to children, and they have been pivotal. It’s ultimately about sharing the Gospel of Jesus and making him known in all the nations. We love seeing it here in Odessa, but we also love seeing it around the world because we are commanded to do it in the Great Commission in Matthew 28:16-20 ...

MEMORIAL DAY - War is neither necessary nor romantic. The deaths that come from war are needless and tragic. Those who give their lives in war may be remembered and honored for their selfless sacrifice, but the wars which brought their deaths are not glorious adventures. REVERSE OFFERING - Since the coronavirus pandemic hit in the spring of 2020, many churches’ weekly offering figures are still not matching what they were two years ago. This shortfall has caused congregations to scale back many of their programs and, even worse, forced them to lay off staff. Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska, though, is not one of those congregations. It has been experiencing sustained giving since the pandemic hit, so much so that it has been able to give back to its worshipers so that they can in turn also give back to the people and organizations in their community that need financial assistance ...
