ODESSA, TEXAS - Children and animals are in many ways synonymous; both are small, curious and full of energy, and for one church in Odessa, the two were a perfect combination to learn about faith.

Upon entering Belmont Baptist Church’s last night of its Vacation Bible School program, energy and excitement rushed throughout the room. Children danced and clapped along with musical numbers celebrating Jesus, and participated in a number of activities to learn key lessons in faith ...

Prayer Concerns for the Week of 07/10/14

North Korea

Nine orphans fled North Korea to escape starvation and illness. All were malnourished and sickly and had lived on the streets scavenging for food. One by one, they crossed into China where they received help from a South Korean couple living there. The couple kept the nine in their home for between five months and three years before helping them escape to Laos. After arriving in Laos, the orphans were taken into custody by Laotian authorities who accused the South Korean couple of trafficking the teens and young adults. The nine were forcibly repatriated back to North Korea in May 2013 then exploited for propaganda purposes. Daily NK reports the orphans were sent back to their home provinces after going through an intense investigation and propaganda training in Pyongyang. The orphans, ranging in age from 15 to 23, are now under special surveillance in their home counties and have been given papers so they may work or go to school.

Please continue to pray for these teenagers and young people and give God thanks they weren’t executed or forced into “re-education camps.” Pray for their safety and emotional well-being. Pray they will know the comfort and peace of the Holy Spirit during this difficult season in their lives.
Pray the faith these nine orphans began to develop while living with the couple in China will sustain them. Pray for girls: 15-year-old Noh Ae-Ji and 16-year-old Chang Guk-Hwa; and boys: 16-year-old Ryu Cheol-Ryong, 18-year-old Park Gwang-Hyuk, 18-year-old Lee Gwang-Hyuk, 19-year-old Ryu Gwang-Hyuk, 20-year-old Baek Young-Won, 20-year-old Jung Gwang-Young, and 23-year-old Moon Cheol.
Pray for children and youth who struggle to survive in North Korea and dream of escaping this harsh regime. Pray for the safety of those who attempt to escape.
Please pray for the protection of aid workers, Christian missionaries, pastors, and church congregations who help smuggle people out of North Korea through China and Southeast Asia. Give thanks to God for their courage and faith in the face of great danger.

India, Nepal

Seven-year-old Prashant Magar is from Jaigaon, a small town in India’s West Bengal state near the Bhutan border. He is blind in both eyes and was abandoned by his family. His parents are divorced and his father is an alcoholic. Last February, a pastor with the Treasure Commission in India made arrangements for Prashant to attend a school for the blind in Kalimpong. Prashant couldn’t afford the school tuition or housing costs.
Please hold Prashant close in prayer as he struggles to find his way in this difficult season. Pray God will provide the resources Prashant needs to attend school and live in Kalimpong. Pray Prashant will feel God’s love through a strong community of support during this trying time.
Give thanks to God for Pastor Bijay Darjee and his care and concern for Prashant. Pray for all of the pastors and missionaries with the Treasure Commission as they spread the Good News of Jesus Christ in India and Nepal.

PRESBYTERY OF WHITEWATER VALLEY, INDIANA - The Footsteps of Faith program at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis was begun in 2001 as a way to encourage young adults to explore their faith deeply. Participants have the opportunity to engage in earnest conversations about theology and faith, the Christian tradition and its intersection with personal faith, and vocation as a response to what one understands God to be asking of his or her life. During the program they are invited to investigate other expressions of faith in the Judeo-Christian heritage and to begin to develop their own spiritual-growth style. After completing an intentional process of spiritual formation, participants meet with the session for a time of blessing and benediction, during which they receive a Bible and are prayed over individually by the gathered ruling and teaching elders. ...

God's Unconditional Love

“What can we say about God’s love? We can say that God’s love is unconditional. God does not say, ‘I love you, if….’ There are no ‘ifs’ in God’s heart. God’s love for us does not depend on what we do or say, on our looks or intelligence, on our success or popularity. God’s love for us existed before we were born and will exist after we have died. God’s love is from eternity to eternity and is not bound to any time-related events or circumstances. Does that mean that God does not care what we do or say? No, because God’s love wouldn’t be real if God didn’t care. To love without condition does not mean to love without concern. God desires to enter into relationship with us and wants us to love God in return.”

From @FWMission ... Friday Story: "Big Dreamer"

Founded in 2001, Free Wheelchair Mission is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to providing wheelchairs for the impoverished disabled in developing nations. Headquartered in Irvine, California, FWM works around the world in partnership with a vast network of humanitarian, faith-based and government organizations, sending wheelchairs to hundreds of thousands of disabled people, providing not only the gift of mobility, but of dignity, independence, and hope.

Friday Story: "Big Dreamer"

Greetings and happy Friday!

How can an individual fulfill a dream when they cannot even walk out of their home? How can a young boy imagine success when his mother has to carry him everywhere on her back? These are questions individuals across the developing world face each day. Our mission is to provide these individuals the gift of mobility in hopes for them to reach their full potential. This week’s story comes from our Distribution Partner, the Malawi Project:

Chimwemwe is an 11 year old boy living in the Mbera Village in Balaka District – Southern Malawi. Like any young boy his age, he has dreams. Dreams to have an education and of becoming a school teacher. But Chimwemwe has cerebral palsy and cannot walk since he is paralyzed from the waist down ...

Want to take one of these wheelchairs  for a test drive? During normal business hours, visit the lobby at the Texas Street entrance of First Presbyterian Church-Midland, at the northwest corner of Texas and A streets, on the west side of downtown Midland. You can give the gift of mobility. The cost of $72.00 is a bargain to us ... but it is a life-changing gift to impoverished and disabled recipients ... and there are times when your contribution will be matched, reaching not one - but TWO, and sometimes FOUR recipients. Please note on your check "Wheelchair Gift."

FBR Report: "15 Shan Team Members Graduate Advanced Training"

The Free Burma Rangers (FBR) is a multi-ethnic humanitarian service movement. They bring help, hope and love to people in the war zones of Burma (Myanmar). Ethnic pro-democracy groups send teams to be trained, supplied and sent into the areas under attack to provide emergency assistance and human rights documentation. Together with other groups, the teams work to serve people in need.

"15 Shan Team Members Graduate Advanced Training"
Distributed by Free Burma Rangers, June, 2014

On 23 April 2014, 15 Shan Free Burma Rangers graduated from advanced leadership and relief team training. Most of these Rangers had attended basic training in 2013 and returned this year for review and advanced instruction on specific topics. The training was divided between classroom instruction and practical field exercises and furthered their capacity to provide relief to their people and report events in Burma. FBR headquarters staff, comprised of Karen, Kachin and Shan team members, provided instruction ...

Committed to the Calling: "There is no them, only us"

I met Brett and Shelly Faucett when they were mission co-workers living in Chiang Mai, Thailand, during my own church's mission to that country in 2008. At the time, they were HIV/AIDS regional consultants. Brett is a nurse and amateur photographer. Shelly, a former literacy specialist and ESL teacher. They had their two daughters, Acacia and Annapurna, with them. You can follow the Faucett family though their "Committed to the Calling" blog.

"There is no them, only us"

I just recently finished facilitating a "Channels of Hope" HIV/AIDS 2 day workshop and I am always amazed at the transformation of the participants and of myself during these workshops. We really delve into the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS and we challenge people with activities to think outside of themselves. Our biggest challenge is moving away from an attitude of "us and them" and realizing it is about "us."

Nigeria

An Islamic group called Boko Haram (which means “Western education is sinful”) has employed extreme violence in its campaign to establish an Islamic Sharia state in northeast Nigeria. They generally target Christians, but a large proportion of their victims have been Muslim. The extremist group continues its campaign of terror in the remote villages of Borno in northeast Nigeria with near daily raids, murders, and abductions. They have looted villages and burned homes and churches to the ground in their raids. Boko Haram has also attacked police and UN headquarters in the capital, and set off bombs in the central city of Jos.

In April, the group kidnapped 276 girls from a secondary school in Chibok. Boko Haram demands the release of its imprisoned militants in exchange for the girls, but the Nigerian government refuses to negotiate with them. More than 560 civilians have been killed by Boko Haram since the school girls’ abduction in April and more than 100 women and children have been taken from their villages. Thousands of people have fled the violence in the region and an estimated three million people are affected by it.

Pray for children and families who’ve been affected by Boko Haram’s violent campaign. Pray for those who have had loved ones killed or injured in attacks by this militant group. Pray for children and families who have lost their homes. Pray God will provide for their immediate and deepest needs.
Continue to pray for the safe release of the school girls, as well as the women and children kidnapped by Boko Haram. Pray for those who’ve been forced to convert from Christianity to Islam. Pray for God’s comfort and peace during this frightening time. Pray for the loved ones of these kidnap victims.
Please pray for peace in Nigeria’s troubled northeast region. Pray for Nigeria’s government and military leaders during this challenging season. Pray for wisdom and courage to do the right thing for their fellow Nigerians, especially the children of this fractured country.
Pray for Boko Haram’s leaders—that God would change the hearts of those who use violence to achieve goals.

United States, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador

The number of unaccompanied children coming to the United States from Central America continues to grow. Since last October, an estimated 52,000 unaccompanied migrant children have been detained after crossing into the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas from Mexico. Most of them are fleeing drug cartel or gang violence in Guatemala, Honduras, or El Salvador. The average age of children crossing is 14, but arrests of unaccompanied children under age 2 have been reported. This flood of migrant children has strained detention centers in Texas and forced authorities to find alternative housing for those who’ve come to the U.S. without parents or guardians.
more on this issue
This massive influx of children is thought to be caused by a misconception among migrants that traveling with children will allow them to enter the U.S. and that minor children won’t be deported. Coyotes (human smugglers) perpetuate this mistaken belief in order to profit from it. Unaccompanied children are held in detention facilities until they can be placed with a parent or guardian in the U.S. They are required to reappear for a deportation hearing.
more on this issue
Please continue to keep in prayer unaccompanied children who are migrating or have migrated to the U.S. Pray for those who have experienced violence at home, only to go through it again during their journey north. Pray for children who have been apprehended and are now in shelters. Pray for those who are frightened and feeling alone.
Pray for children and young people who have endured great abuse and hardship during their trips north. Pray for those who have been attacked, robbed, chased, sexually assaulted, or kidnapped and trafficked by drug cartels. Pray for those who endure hunger, thirst, illness, or exposure to extreme heat or cold. Pray for those who have witnessed brutal or traumatizing events during their long journey north.
Please keep in prayer law enforcement officers and those who process or work with unaccompanied migrant children along the U.S./Mexico border. Pray God will grant them wisdom and compassion while working with traumatized children.
Pray for parents who make difficult life and death decisions about their children…whether to keep their children home where they’re vulnerable to extreme violence from drug cartels and gangs or send them north on a treacherous journey where they’re vulnerable to being trafficked.
Please pray for the leaders and people of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Pray God will bring healing to their nations. Pray for an end to poverty, gang violence, and the desperation that causes parents to send their children over a thousand miles away so they won’t be killed.

Faces of Children

Please continue to pray that more churches and individuals will join with the ministry of Faces of Children in spreading awareness about children in crisis and inviting more people to pray for children at risk.

MIDLAND, TEXAS - First United Methodist Church soon will embark on a mission to update its campus in an effort to offer its congregation a greater ability to connect with one another and to keep up with the rapidly changing surroundings of downtown Midland.

A Midland church since 1885, the staff and congregation hope the upcoming renovations will connect parts of the building that are currently connected by a labyrinth of hallways that might be confusing to newcomers, as well as provide the campus a clear, welcoming entrance.

“The vision for this project came after a little over three years of studies of our congregations and our ability to connect with one another,” said the Rev. Tim Walker ...

WAW Wednesdays: The Miracle of Moises

"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. Tim Tam, Director of the Amarillo, Texas-based ministry. "Through our relationships, God reveals needs and opportunities for service. As we come along side the poor, new friendships develop and doors for ministry open. As we serve, God provides the resources to supply for the needs he reveals."

The Miracle of Moises

Friends,

Our staff and ministry are super busy in Belize right now. Well over a hundred volunteers from quite a spread of churches ... LaJolla, CA; Memphis, TN; Pascagoula, MS and Baton Rouge, LA. And reinforcements are on the way for next week. The teams are staying in various locations working multiple projects I guess we will make that next weeks story when we have the photos, which should also include another shipping container arriving ... and World Cup party on the big screen in the Valley of Peace.

Remember the Miracle of Moises? The boy who could see and speak with angels? The 1st photo below is the day we met, he was 9 years old and down to 30 pounds from starvation. A bad accident had severed his intestines. Doctors tried surgery but backed away, not even closing his incision and expected him to only live for 5 hours.

And 3 months later on the brink of death we met. We brought him to the States for life saving surgery. We know God intervened to save him for something ... so for you who have followed his story these past few years we are giving an update ...

AND THE BIG NEWS IS ... Last weekend Moises graduated and in the fall he will begin high school. Pictured below at graduation ceremony with most of his family and his Principal on the left. The pretty little girl in the front is Lisa, named after my wife who sat with Moises’ pregnant mother every day for months while Moises was here in the hospital My surgery kept my wife and I from attending but our good friends took a camera and also put him on the phone with us.

God is good and can’t wait to see what unfolds next.

Thanks for your time,

Tim Tam

PRESBYTERY OF BLACKHAWK, ILLINOIS - First Presbyterian Church of Rockford celebrated 158 years of ministry in July 2012 amid knowledge that change was coming. In November 2011 the session recommended that the church’s 105-year-old building be sold. The decision wasn’t easy, but the congregation had dwindled and maintenance costs had escalated. Without dissent, the congregation agreed to sell. They made the decision not knowing their future; they knew only that they would first attempt to sell the building and then decide to close, move, or merge ...

FBR Report: "'Please tell the world about us' Standing with the Oppressed – a FBR relief mission in Sudan"

Distributed by Free Burma Rangers, June, 2014

Thank you for all you do for us and the people of Burma. This report is about a relief mission we in FBR have just been part of in Sudan. Our main work is in Burma but last year we were invited by the people of the Nuba mountains of Sudan who are suffering under relentless attacks by the dictatorship of Sudan. This may be a one time mission or an expansion of the FBR mission, we do not know but listen and go step by step. Along with our family and Dr. Shannon, three FBR headquarters members were part of this team, Monkey, Eliya and Ray Kaw. They were a crucial part of the training and mission as well as being wonderful ambassadors for their people.

We prayed about this and felt that even though our main work is in Burma and we were very small, we should try to respond to the request for help by people in need ...

Invitation to Prayer: TOMORROW

Faces of Children is an ecumenical prayer ministry under the auspices of First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas. Our mission is to initiate ministries of prayer for children in churches, communities, and neighborhoods. In doing so, we seek to provide an opportunity for people of God to join together, learn about children and their needs throughout the world, and celebrate Christ's love (especially as it relates to children).

Silence and Voices of Light

“Silence is the discipline that helps us to go beyond the entertainment quality of our lives. There we can let our sorrows and joys emerge from their hidden place and look us in the face, saying: ‘Don’t be afraid; you can look at your own journey, its dark and light sides, and discover your way to freedom.’ We may find silence in nature, in our own houses, in a church, or meditation hall. But wherever we find it, we should cherish it. Because it is in silence that we can truly acknowledge who we are and gradually claim ourselves as a gift from God.

At first silence might only frighten us. In silence we start hearing the voices of darkness: our jealousy and anger, our resentment and desire for revenge, our lust and greed, and our pain over losses, abuses, and rejections. These voices are often noisy and boisterous. They may even deafen us. Our most spontaneous reaction is to run away from them and return to our entertainment.

But if we have the discipline to stay put and not let these dark voices intimidate us, they will gradually lose their strength and recede into the background, creating space for the softer, gentler voices of the light.

These voices speak of peace, kindness, gentleness, goodness, joy, hope, forgiveness, and, most of all, love. They might at first seem small and insignificant, and we may have a hard time trusting them. However, they are very persistent and they will grow stronger if we keep listening. They come from a very deep place and from very far. They have been speaking to us since before we were born, and they reveal to us that there is no darkness in the One who sent us into the world, only light.”

A message from Chris Laufer, Coordinator, Faces of Children

Thank you for your faithfulness in prayer for the children of our hearts and world! If you have prayer concerns or celebrations about children, those who care for them, those who have authority over them, or those who harm them (the really hard prayers to say sometimes), please send them to me at at claufer@facesofchildren.net, or give me a call.

Grace and Peace,

Chris

SYNOD OF LINCOLN TRAILS - It seemed like a simple enough question.

After reading a Scripture passage in a small-group Bible study, the pastor asked a participant sitting next to him: “Qué piensas del pasaje? What do you think about the passage?” The young mother, a recent immigrant, began to get emotional. After collecting herself, she finally answered, in Spanish, “No one has ever asked me before what I think about a Bible passage” ...
