In the News ... "Lay minister considers Apostle Paul"

ODESSA, TEXAS - The Rev. Mark Allen Russell had always been interested in pursuing the ministry and helping others but didn’t grasp the full scope of his religion until enrolling at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s Parish Lay Ministry Academy in Fort Worth.

“I started in 2000 and graduated 10,000 miles later in 2002,” said Russell, minister of Christ’s Lutheran Church at 2002 N. Lincoln Ave. “There is a depth to Christianity that most people never understand. It’s mind-blowing.”

One of the lay ministry candidate’s assignments, he said, was to choose a subject and write a Scriptural defense of it. “Mine was that the Apostle Paul would be a great Texan with a cowboy hat, belt buckle, boots and spurs,” Russell said ...

JEOPARDY ARPPEARANCE OFFERS LIFE LESSONS FOR PC(USA) ORDINATION CANDIDATE - Blair Moorhead’s recent appearance on the televised game show Jeopardy! was the end of a long process of auditioning. It was also a reminder of valuable life skills for the social worker and candidate for ordination as a teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) The Jeopardy! episodes in which Moorhead appeared as a contestant aired January 9 and 10, 2017, although the show was taped last September. The nearly year-long process of getting on the show began with an online test of 50 questions taken in January 2016 followed by a March confirmation of her possible selection. After an in-person interview in April, she was notified of her final selection and the September taping date in Los Angeles ...

WAW Wednesday ... "4.5.17 #wearethewordatwork"

"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. Tim Tam, Director of the Amarillo, Texas-based ministry. "Through our relationships, God reveals needs and opportunities for service. As we come along side the poor, new friendships develop and doors for ministry open. As we serve, God provides the resources to supply for the needs he reveals."

WAW Wednesday: "4.5.17 #wearethewordatwork"

Hello Friends,

Growing up, April Fools' Day was a lot of fun - it was a day to dream up the most fantastic stories possible and attempt to sway friends and family to believe them - and as the youngest and only daughter, my brothers may or may not have found me to be quite gullible!

Since October we've been looking forward to April 1 when Tim Tam returns to TWAW - and we've laughed several times at the irony of the date!

Rest assured, friends, Tim's return is not an elaborate April Fools' prank! Here he is now:

Six months of sabbatical has flown by.

But wow, what a sabbatical!!!!!!!

I don't believe I've ever felt this great, or felt this close to God, or felt this much love for my wife and kids. The plan now it's to come back out of orbit slowly and carefully so I don't burn up on reentry. I was able to meet with Mollie this afternoon and begin to catch up on all the wonderful things that have happened with TWAW in my absence.

All in all, this last six months was a wonderful gift from God for me personally and yet another great gift was to see how TWAW was able to flourish in my absence because God has blessed us with such capable and competent staff.

These are merely my first few words. I'll be sharing more soon and even making occasional appearances as I re-acclimate. This afternoon Mollie was a bit frightened by my appearance and has suggested that like Moses when he came down from the mountain I wear a veil till my glowing aura dies down (recent photo below).

On Thursday, March 30, our beloved sister (and amazing trip coordinator / administrator) Jo Cole, and her husband, Chad, suffered a profound loss as their 18-week-old daughter Zoey was born too soon. We ask that you cover the Cole's and their 3-year-old son, Asher, in prayer for comfort and peace and a special measure of the awareness of the hope of the Resurrection that we'll celebrate in just a couple of weeks. Jo continues to heal at home.

Pastor Phillipa (Exodus Ministries) was in an automobile accident Monday - she was a bit banged up, but walked away whole! Keep praying over Phillipa and all of the Herrera family (Leonie, Stanley, their mother) as they recover from attacks on their health.

Dallan is healing slowly but surely. Pray for encouragement for Dallan - for friends to come around him and keep his spirits up - and praise God for making all the connections a year ago that led to his life-saving surgery. We praise God for the funding He has provided and trust for His provision for what's left owing.

We truly had an incredible March with teams in Belize! Praise God for how he uses us as his hands and feet! Pray for the relationships that began or were renewed - that they would bring glory to God and continue to reveal glimpses of the kingdom to us!

Our summer trip board is full of teams! We're grateful so many will join us in Belize - please pray for our staff as we discern leadership assignments and make preparation.

Finally, we're excited for Tim Tam to return - pray we don't overwhelm him with all the good stuff we have to share! We're grateful he's had this time and we can't wait to hear what God has revealed to him during sabbatical!

Gratefully,

Mollie and the Staff
The Word at Work

EDITOR'S NOTE: Speaking from my own first-hand experience - working side-by-side with Tim, Kenny and our brothers and sisters in Belize - won't you give thoughtful, prayerful consideration to supporting the efforts of Tim, the Word At Work staff and their partners? Please please fill out this Commitment Card and return it to their office!

Also, remember that you can follow The Word At Work on their Facebook page!

40-Day Journey with Dietrich Bonhoeffer ... "Day 30"

Presented by Bible Gateway
"Day 30"

"A Christian community either lives by the intercessory prayers of its members for one another, or the community will be destroyed. I can no longer condemn or hate other Christians for whom I pray, no matter how much trouble they cause me. In intercessory prayer the face that may have been strange and intolerable to me is transformed into the face of one for whom Christ died, the face of a pardoned sinner. That is a blessed discovery for the Christian who is beginning to offer intercessory prayer for others. As far as we are concerned, there is no dislike, no personal tension, no disunity or strife that cannot be overcome by intercessory prayer. Intercessory prayer is the purifying bath into which the individual and the community must enter every day."

Biblical Wisdom

"Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints." Ephesians 6:18

Questions to Ponder

What is more common in the church, generic prayers for “those in need” or specific prayers for specific individuals? Why?
How common is it for individual Christians and communities of faith to pray for the good of those they dislike or are in conflict with?
In what ways does intercessory prayer protect a community of faith?

Psalm Fragment

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls, and security within your towers.” For the sake of my relatives and friends I will say, “Peace be within you.” For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your good ...” Psalm 122:6-9

Journal Reflections

Reflect on your prayer life. Have you ever prayed for the good of anyone you were in a conflict with?
If so, what happened as a result of your prayer? Did it change the way you thought about that person?
If not, reflect in your journal as to whether or not you are ready to pray for the good of people who have hurt you or whom you dislike for any reason?

Intercessions

Pray that your community of faith would be a place where conflict is resolved and hard feelings softened through intercessory prayer.

Prayer for Today

Forgiving God, may I see those with whom I am in conflict as your beloved, and may I share in your love for them by praying for them.

Dear Intercessors,

A couple of weeks ago, our school district voted to close a local elementary campus due to multiple years of failing to meet minimum state performance standards. As you might imagine, the decision was not without controversy and many conflicting opinions on what would be best for the students and families served by Crockett Elementary. This week, I spoke with the director of Kaleidoscope Ministries, a local non-profit working in Crockett's neighborhood which seeks to serve children and families who attend this and other neighborhood schools through a "two-fold approach that includes one-on-one mentoring and targeted small group programs. Kaleidoscope builds relationships one person at a time. We take a close look at the unique needs of each individual and then tailor a plan to meet four specific areas of need: Spiritual, relational, educational and physical."

Lynn Rogers, the director, shared several specific areas we can be praying for the children, families, and teachers impacted by this closure:
Please pray these children do not internalize the message that they attend a "failing school" as a message that means they are incapable of achieving great things academically.
Please pray for the teachers on the campus who face shepherding their students through the remainder of the school year knowing that everyone will be dispersed next year and that they will also be looking for new teaching jobs.
Pray the teachers would be able to maintain high morale, even in the face of a lot of uncertainty.
Pray for the families who need to register their children for new schools. Pray these families can successfully navigate a system that many of them do not completely understand.
Pray for our community to begin looking at new ways we can come alongside our school district and help more children succeed.
Pray for churches in our community to take more seriously the call to "love our neighbors as ourselves," and look for practical ways we can get involved in mentoring families affected by generational poverty; families who may not understand the middle class social norms that are required to successfully navigate so many systems in society.

In addition to praying for this local ministry and our schools, I'd like to invite you to pray for these areas of global concern this week:

YEMEN // Child marriage soars in Yemen as famine looms - UN
Reuters Photo by Khaled Abdullah
"Child marriage has soared in Yemen as families struggle to feed their children amid a conflict that has left the country on the brink of famine, the U.N. children's agency said on Monday. More than two thirds of girls in Yemen are married off before they reach 18, compared to half of girls before the conflict escalated, UNICEF said in a report to mark the second anniversary of the war. It said parents struggling with deepening poverty were increasingly marrying off their daughters to reduce costs and the number of mouths to feed or because they believed a husband's family could offer better protection. Around 80 percent of families in Yemen are in debt or are borrowing money to feed their children, the agency said."

There are many implications to war and famine that we might not anticipate, and an upswing in child marriage is certainly one for me. Please pray for these girls -- pray they are protected from abuse and neglect and further trauma. Pray that families find other ways to feed their children; and ask God to comfort those parents faced with unimaginable choices. Pray for political conflicts creating this war and man-made famine to be resolved, and lift up aid groups working in the area who are trying to bring in adequate supplies and food.

PHILIPPINES // Tech advances fuel rise in online sex abuse of children in Philippines - charity
Reuters Photo by Romeo Ranoco
"Technological advances, including the spread of high-speed internet, have fuelled a surge in the Philippines of the sexual abuse of children as young as one years old in front of a live webcam, an anti-slavery group said. Victims of this crime are often much younger than those trapped in other forms of modern slavery, said International Justice Mission (IJM), which started a campaign this week to raise awareness about cybersex trafficking. ... The United Nations children's agency UNICEF estimates 1.8 million children are trafficked into the sex trade every year - but this does not include cybersex trafficking. The Philippines national police receive well over 2,000 referrals of potential online exploitation of children a month, according to the IJM. The Philippine Department of Justice reported more than 8,000 referrals from the U.S.-based National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in the first four months of 2015. IJM, whose campaign is called #NotOnMyScreen, said cybersex trafficking is a relatively low risk crime since it is committed in private in the home."

Though we have heard IJM talking about this issue for many months, let's join them in praying for their campaign to raise awareness of this issue outside of their normal circle of supporters to be effective. And pray for the authorities in both the Philippines and around the world to find new ways to get ahead of this abuse and shut down the market. Finally, pray for the thousands of children currently being victimized in the Philippines. God is their protector; join me in praying for Him to guard their hearts and minds even as they endure abuse.

Partners Blog: "An Open Letter to the Christian Church in the United States"

Steve and Oddny Gumaer started Partners Relief and Development in response to the needs of refugees and displaced people from Burma, and now in the Middle East, as well. Their mission is to demonstrate, through holistic action, God’s love to children and communities made vulnerable by war in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and other conflict zones.

An Open Letter to the Christian Church in the United States

Dear friends, brothers, and sisters, In the most poignant irony, it was a Middle Eastern man who told us to love our neighbors as ourselves; it was a Middle Eastern man who reached down, walked toward, and stretched out His arms to us. This man’s story is told in a book whose primary theme is love for God and justice for the poor, the widow, the orphan and the alien. Over and over He told and lived stories that played this out, giving us an example that we might follow in His steps, which is precisely and imperfectly what we at Partners have been trying to do for over twenty years ...

40-Day Journey with Dietrich Bonhoeffer ... "Day 29"

Presented by Bible Gateway
"Day 29"

"Third, we speak of the service involved in bearing with others. “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Gal. 6:2). Thus the law of Christ is a law of forbearance. Forbearance means enduring and suffering. The other person is a burden to the Christian, in fact for the Christian most of all. The other person never becomes a burden at all for the pagans. They simply stay clear of every burden the other person may create for them. However, Christians must bear the burden of one another. Only as a burden is the other really a brother or sister and not just an object to be controlled."

Biblical Wisdom

"So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith." Galatians 6:9-10

Questions to Ponder

In what ways might “bearing with others” have a positive rather than negative connotation?
What do you think of Bonhoeffer’s assertion that: “The other person is a burden to the Christian”? Can that be a good way to look at other people?
How does the church “bear with” the larger community that surrounds it?

Psalm Fragment

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved ...” Psalm 55:22

Journal Reflections

Think of the people in your life. To whom are you a burden? How does it feel?
In what ways do the people in your life help bear your burdens?
Whose burdens are you helping to bear? How does it feel?

Intercessions

Who in your circle of family, friends, and acquaintances is weighed down with heavy burdens? Pray for them in their need and ask God to show you how to help them bear those burdens.

Prayer for Today

Loving God, thank you for bearing with me; make me willing to bear with others.

40-Day Journey with Dietrich Bonhoeffer ... "Day 28"

Presented by Bible Gateway
"Day 28"

"The other service one should perform for another person in a Christian community is active helpfulness. To begin with, we have in mind simple assistance in minor, external matters. There are many such things wherever people live together. Nobody is too good for the lowest service. Those who worry about the loss of time entailed by such small, external acts of helpfulness are usually taking their own work too seriously. We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interrupted by God, who will thwart our plans and frustrate our ways time and again, even daily, by sending people across our path with their demands and requests."

Biblical Wisdom

"“The greatest among you will be your servant." Matthew 23:11

Questions to Ponder

What are the forms “active helpfulness” might take in a community of faith?
Is it true that: “Nobody is too good for the lowest service”? Why, or why not?
How does taking their own work too seriously tempt people to undervalue the real needs of others?

Psalm Fragment

“For he [the ruler] delivers the needy when they call, the poor and those who have no helper. He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy. From oppression and violence he redeems their life; and precious is their blood in his sight ...” Psalm 72:12-14

Journal Reflections

Reflect on specific instances in which you were “interrupted by God” in the form of someone in need of help who crossed your path. What did you do? How did you feel about it?
Write about your degree of willingness to be “interrupted by God.”
What might the “lowest service” be in your community of faith?

Prayer for Today

Lord, as I go about my business today, don’t hesitate to interrupt me, and give me the grace to notice the interruption.

NIGERIA // 'School is good': the boy who refused to let Boko Haram deny him education

Not even loosing his arm to a discarded Boko Haram bomb can hold this 12-year-old boy back. Watch this inspiring video and join me in praising God for the indomitable spirit of children and the way they so easily spring back to hope.

Praying with you,

40-Day Journey with Dietrich Bonhoeffer ... "Day 27"

Presented by Bible Gateway
"Day 27"

(When Bonhoeffer speaks of community, he means any gathering of Christians, including the family.)

"The first service one owes to others in the community involves listening to them. Just as our love for God begins with listening to God’s Word, the beginning of love for other Christians is learning to listen to them. … We do God’s work for our brothers and sisters when we learn to listen to them. So often Christians, especially preachers, think that their only service is always to have to “offer” something when they are together with other people. They forget that listening can be a greater service than speaking. Many people seek a sympathetic ear and do not find it among Christians, because these Christians are talking even when they should be listening. But Christians who can no longer listen to one another will soon no longer be listening to God either; they will always be talking even in the presence of God."

Biblical Wisdom

"“Listen carefully to my words, and let my declaration be in your ears." Job 13:17

Questions to Ponder

What do you think of Bonhoeffer’s statement that “the beginning of love for other Christians is learning to listen to them”?
In what way is listening to our brothers and sisters doing “God’s work” for them?
Why do you suppose so many people find it so difficult to listen?

Psalm Fragment

“But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels. O that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways! ...” Psalm 81:11-13

Journal Reflections

Write about a time when you benefited from having another Christian listen to you.
Write about your experience as a listener. Are you a good listener? Did you feel like you were doing God’s work as you listened?

Intercessions

Think about someone in your community of faith who never seems listened to. Pray that they might have the courage to speak what is on their heart and mind, and pray that you would have the compassion and interest to listen to them.

Prayer for Today

Lord Jesus, may I have the grace to listen to you and learn from you; may I have the grace to listen to and learn from others.

40-Day Journey with Dietrich Bonhoeffer ... "Day 26"

Presented by Bible Gateway
"Day 26"

"Whoever cannot be alone should beware of community. Such people will only do harm to themselves and to the community. Alone you stood before God when God called you. Alone you had to obey God’s voice. Alone you had to take up your cross, struggle, and pray and alone you will die and give an account to God. You cannot avoid yourself, for it is precisely God who has singled you out. If you do not want to be alone, you are rejecting Christ’s call to you, and you can have no part in the community of those who are called…

But the reverse is also true. Whoever cannot stand being in community should beware of being alone. You are called into the community of faith; the call was not meant for you alone. You carry your cross, you struggle, and you pray in the community of faith, the community of those who are called. You are not alone even when you die, and on the day of judgment you will be only one member of the great community of faith of Jesus Christ…

Whoever cannot be alone should beware of community. Whoever cannot stand being in community should beware of being alone."

Biblical Wisdom

"For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another." Romans 12:4-5

Questions to Ponder

Why do so many people in our society seem to fear being alone?
Why do so many churches seem to be mere aggregates of individuals rather than true communities of faith?
In what ways can a disciple establish a healthy balance between aloneness and community?

Psalm Fragment

“Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them ...” Psalm 111:1-2

Journal Reflections

Write about times when you have intentionally been alone. How did it make you feel? What did you do? Did your aloneness have any impact on how you felt when you were with others again?
Write about your experience in community. Do you feel an integral part of your community? Do you feel like you have a good balance between time in community and time alone?

Intercessions

If you know anyone who seems lonely, pray that they might discover true community. If you know anyone who seems afraid to be alone with themselves, pray that they might discover the joy of solitude, of being alone with God.

Prayer for Today

O Lord, when I am too much alone, help me seek community. When I am too dependent on the community, help me to set aside time to be alone.

GIVE-AND-TAKE OF LENT - We use the season of Lent to prepare our hearts and minds for the mystery of the resurrection. We all do that differently. Some churches place ashes on the foreheads of worshipers on Ash Wednesday; others don’t. Some “lock up” their “Alleluias” until Easter morning, others host a weekly fish fry and still others hold special midweek justice or outreach programs. So, we have asked one of our theologians about the meaning and practices of Lent ...
